I — feeling unsure — made my way inside. I could just feel her getting increasingly upset. Hearing the faint murmurs from her phone, it sounded like a lot was being said. However, as the one-sided talking continued, her emotions continued to rise. What could they possibly be telling her to make her so angry?
I unsteadily walked into the room, I caught a glimpse of the expression she was facing her laptop with, she was biting her lip. Her anger continued to rise as the phone-call went on. Did I even want to be here? Her anger reached levels that I didn’t think were possible for her. Though it wasn’t… Well, it was as angry as an undead or zombie could get.
“So, there is no way to avoid this?” Ash asked, gritting her teeth. She received a short reply, hung up the phone, and— I shivered. What?! Her anger instantly exploded.
“Trash!” She threw her phone across the room. It crashed against the uncarpeted ground of the kitchen and eventually hit the table’s feet, exploding into a myriad of tiny glass pieces. The glass brick was fragile… I stiffly turned back to look at her, her anger fading. “Fucking retards,” she grumbled.
What… What was that? I… How could she get so angry? That kind of anger reminded me of the Underworld. Nothing that I had experienced before in the human world. Could a human get so angry? No— wait, it was reasonable. I had heard it before, lots of wars happened on earth at some point, right? Perhaps Ash had honed in bloodlust from those— but she is like probably my age? A racial trait from humans?
“Why are you standing there?” Ash asked in slight annoyance, interrupting my thoughts.
“Ah,” I paused, meeting her somewhat predatory gaze. Mind your words Kaiti. “I didn’t think it was a good time to come in, you seemed preoccupied…” Good!
She scoffed. “Yeah right, my vacation just got cut short. They are understaffed.” A short sigh escaped her. “Fuck, I’ll literally die if I work those hours without rest.” Eh?
“Die? You?” Confusing.
“Yes, die,” she nodded. “I will call later for compensation.”
“But your… phone is…” I looked at the ground, Ash followed my gaze to the now broken device.
“I’ll get a new one. It’s just… I thought I had finally caught a break,” She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “It’s been less than a month into my vacation.”
“I see…” I couldn’t quite understand it. Like I had previously said. Grim Reapers knew no rest.
Ash pondered for a second hearing my engaging reply.
“Actually Kat.”
“Yes?” She was curious about me?
“Do you have a job?” She asked with almost unbelievable innocence.
“No, but I was going to get one soon…” I had a bad feeling about that reply.
“Oh, good luck with that. Though you don’t seem to…” She looked at me top to bottom. “Have a lot going for you.”
I clicked my tongue. “You’re very rude, you know, I have lots of things going for me!” I puffed up my chest. She shouldn’t look down on me!
“Like?” She asked with a sudden grin.
“Like—” Being able to pass souls. “Like…” I couldn’t say anything! Ash laughed seeing my pause. She was slightly happy, no longer minding her job. It was nice that I had made her happy, but not at my expense.
“I am sure you’ll find something, Kat.” She smiled at me and went to her laptop.
I humphed. So much for talking to her, if she hated her job so much she could just quit. Actually why didn’t she just quit? I tilted my head in confusion.
“Ash, why don’t you just quit your job if it makes you so angry?”
“Hmm? It’s not so easy. At least not with mine. I’ll get deported.” Deported? What did that even mean? “Well if that’s what one calls it. Wish I could just quit though.”
Huh. I guess she had her own concerns as well. I nodded acknowledging her response. I guess my roommate wasn’t as useless as I initially thought. Though, I did not particularly enjoy how she treated me so far. But it was mostly just teasing. I think.

After a pause I looked down the hall at the phone, then at the kitchen, and finally at the window. The sun was now long disappeared from the horizon, and its light nowhere to be seen — though the window wasn’t facing the sun — it was night now. My first day was over. I fiddled with the card in my pocket, recalling things.
Today was… an okay day. I didn’t want it to call it bad, since I didn’t have any sort of way to tell what made a bad day here. But I hadn’t met my initial goals. Though I did learn a thing or two so that was good and made me slightly more cheerful. My roommate was weird, but not dislikeable. My… landlord was a nice person that was happy by simply seeing me.
So I guess that I had at least made his day better, though perhaps I might’ve done pretty much nothing for those other humans, it was a great start.
I picked up my backpack from the couch, and went down the hall I initially spotted when entering. The entire apartment wasn’t awfully spacious, the living room and kitchen was like a big rectangle, and I guess the rooms were also another rectangle; essentially forming a square.
Walking down the small hallway I came face to face to see three doors, it was slightly confined, though all the doors could open at once without collision. There was a door I faced, then one to my left and right. Not thinking much about it, I opened the first door and—
It was a bathroom. I closed it. Though from the small glimpse, it looked rather nice, and it wasn’t messy. Like the rest of the house. After a short indecision I decided to open the door to my left. It was a bedroom— I opened the right door and it was basically the mirrored version.
I guess she really did live in the living room. Somehow, I didn’t want to believe it, but there wasn’t any more rooms in the apartment. I ended up going to the right and picking that as my room. There was a window that saw to the outside— huh? I guess the apartment was at the edge of the building. It was nice to have a window. I could break through it in case of an attack—
I wasn’t in the Underworld anymore. I sighed.
This was a new world. A place where I could make people happy. I looked around the room to make myself at home. There was a desk near the window, a television next to the door, and finally a bed across the door with a gray carpet underneath. Oh, and a closet. Though…
I shifted uncomfortably. Did I even bring clothes? I mean— I didn’t need to change clothes, they would clean themselves. Perks of magic tailoring. Though I didn’t understand it.
To make sure, I set my backpack on the bed and began rummaging.
One set of clothes. They were black. And em… I pulled a small folder casing, it was close to a portfolio but I didn’t know the name of it. It contained all my documents such as my birth certificate, and other relevant things. Oh! It even had a resume. Dad was very thoughtful! It also came with my identification. Now thinking about it, shouldn’t that be in my wallet?
“Lets see…” I grabbed it and read it out of curiosity.
Kaiti Necros. It all looked fine. Wait… I paused doing mental math. I was eighteen? Well it said I was eighteen, but… I was one year younger than that… Wouldn’t that be troublesome? Well, dad had arranged it so… not my problem!— Oh it even had the address of my apartment.
After putting the identification card in my wallet and making sure everything was in order I put everything on my desk, and finally looked at the sky through the window.
This day was rather uneventful. A small sigh escaped me as I jumped on my bed and began rolling on it. It was soft. But I liked it here. I felt peace in my mind staying here. It was nice. Contrasting to the usual random nightly howls or just the constant negative emotions around. The Underworld wasn’t bad, but it was chaotic.
But here? Everything was peaceful and I could relax. This place was…
I wasn’t in the Underworld anymore. I squirmed in happiness from the sudden realization. This was a new world! Maybe… I could make friends… I just had to take it easy and slowly… Begin to understand the people here and then—
I could begin to try to make friends. Lots and lots of them!
I hugged my pillow. I was already beginning to get wrapped in the bedsheets of the bed. But I didn’t mind it, I was comfortable, happy and comfortable. More happy than comfortable, but comfortable nonetheless.
I knew what I was going to do now— first get a job! Then make friends, lots and lots of friends!
I looked at the ceiling. No more bloodshed. No more sadness. No more despair. I wasn’t in the Underworld anymore! I was in a different place… A much happier one. I smiled, my body felt heavy.
How long had it been since I last slept? A few days?
Everything was so quiet.
So relaxing…
