[THE signal being released by the cube was indeed quite
familiar.]–Cato responded to what Rei said earlier.

[No, somehow, I don’t think so. What I do know is that
they’re extremely dangerous.]

A flash of interest appeared in the depths of Rei’s
silvery gray eyes. [So, what that NASA scientist said about these cubes being
harmless was just plain bullsh*t?]

[Yes, master. Although I may not have my memories, I can
tell with certainty that these cubes will bring nothing but catastrophe to this
planet.]–Cato said in a grave tone which didn’t really match his youthful
voice.

Rei said nothing and just called the waiter to order
another bowl of ramen.

It was five years ago when he first met Cato. The other
was just a small ball of light, probably not even bigger than a penny. Rei was
inside a small white room then. It was his cage inside that laboratory. That
day, he knew that the time for him to be discarded was nearing. They would kill
quietly him because after years and years of experiment, he turned out to be
just a waste.

He could tell because there were already other
experimental subjects doing much better than him. The more they succeeded, the
more of a failure he seemed. He knew it was only a matter of time before they
got rid of him.

But Rei didn’t like this kind of ending. After all the
pain and suffering they had subjected him to, stripping him of all things that
could make him ‘normal’, how could he die just like that? But he also knew that
he could do nothing. He was just a weak 12-year-old kid who could barely move
his body because of malnutrition and abuse. Exacting revenge before they
disposed of him was simply a daydream.

While he was imagining slitting the throat of every
scientist and doctor in that laboratory, it was then that Cato appeared before
his eyes.

In the 12-year-old boy’s blurry vision, he could see a floating
ball in front of him. And the voice also came from this ball of light. He
wondered if the hunger he’s feeling finally caused him to hallucinate.

[If you let me in your mind, I will try my best to help
you.]–said that ball of light again.

The voice sounded like a six or seven-year-old boy had
said it. He knew that there must be something really wrong with his brain.
Because he was not only having a visual hallucination, but an auditory one as
well. But since he had nothing better to do, he might as well humor this light
ball.

“If you can get me out of this hell, then sure. You can
live inside my head rent free.”

Rei didn’t expect that a month after that, he would
really come out of that laboratory alive and breathing, with all his faculties
intact.

Cato had been a crucial part of his survival since then.
The other was like a supercomputer that could absorb and store any information.
Because of this, even without his memories, he could still help Rei in a lot of
ways.

When they met, Cato was in a very weak. The other told
him that his existence was slowly diminishing into little clusters of light. If
he didn’t find a haven for himself, he would completely turn into nothing.

Cato said that when he came into his senses, he was
already on Earth and was close to vanishing. With no memories, all he could
rely on was his instinct. And that led him to Rei.

According to the other, Rei possessed something very
familiar. Something that reminded him of ‘home’, wherever that was. His
instinct was telling him that if he wanted to survive, then he must stay by
Rei’s side.

At first, it only started as some kind of symbiotic
relationship between the two of them. Cato helped him navigate life—teaching
him everything that he needed to learn and even providing him with training
that could help him stronger. While he provided a safe place for the other.
Because apparently, his mind could act like some sort of shield, preventing
Cato from being completely obliterated.

Rei didn’t know how could that happen. In fact, Cato also
wasn’t so clear why. He just somehow knew that it would. It’s probably related
to the other’s missing memories. But Rei really cared little for the reason.

Growing up as he did, he could easily tell when a person
had malice towards him. And even though Cato was not exactly a person, he could
still feel that the other didn’t mean him any harm. One might say that he’s
being naïve for thinking that way. But it had been five years already, and he’s
still alive. Wasn’t that enough proof that the decision he made was correct?

If there came a time that Cato ended up betraying him,
well, he would just make sure that he would suffer the same way as him. No, the
other should definitely suffer more.

Rei was thankful that Cato couldn’t read his thoughts.
Unless he allowed him to, that is. If not, then this guy would have definitely
started nagging at him because of what he just thought.

[Well, let’s just hope they won’t blow this planet before
we could get to our aim.]–he said in response to the cubes possibly causing a
catastrophe.

[No, I have a feeling that whoever sent these cubes here
has an entirely different plan.]

Rei finished eating his second bowl of ramen before
paying up. He stood up, hang the strap attached to the scabbard of his Katana
over his shoulder, and then walked out of the ramen shop.

[Now, let’s go to our next target.]
