I continued on my ice board with a change of clothes. This time I opted for a white top and a skirt cut just above my knees. Of course I also had on underwear finally. I thought about putting on thicker clothes, but the snow didn't feel bad. Instead, the cold felt pleasant to me. I stored away my robes along with the letter in my inventory, as I continued my journey in the tundra.

Eventually the snowy haze started to clear as the blizzard came to an end. When it did clear, I finally saw something off in the distance. I narrowed my eyes, and the sight enhanced. 3 Small wooden houses could be seen. I wondered if I would finally meet someone, but I didn’t hold out hope as I got closer. I skidded to a stop as I finally arrived at the small structures.

The buildings were in really bad disrepair. The walls were all weathered with several holes in them, and there was not a door to speak of on the entrances. As I got closer to one of the buildings to peek in the entrance, my ears twitched as they picked up a whining sound inside. The entrance to the thing had a layer of snow, but further in the back the snow covered the room more lightly. When I looked towards the corner of the building I saw something that made my heart sink.

Curled up in a ball was a malnourished white fox. It was missing patches of fur in several places, and it could barely move its head to look up at me. It let out another faint cry as it looked towards me. I slowly made my way over to the animal, so I didn’t startle it. To my surprise when I got on my knees next to it, the fox started to rub its head against me as it purred. My eyes started to tear up from looking at how miserable it was. “Let me help you.”

I pulled a health potion from my inventory, and as I stroked its head I poured the contents in the fox’s mouth with my other hand. The effects were immediate. The fox started to glow, and then the patches on its body became filled with fur. As the fox healed I started rubbing his belly. “There, there you will be alright now. Why are you out here all alone little fox?”

I pulled some sausages out of my inventory. His belly was still looking thin despite the potion. “Here you go. I have plenty of these to spare.” I sat him on my lap as I fed him sausages. He gobbled them up quickly. “You sure were hungry weren’t you?” He let out a happy bark before licking my face. “Hahaha, stop that. It tickles!”

“Do you want to come with me, little fox?” I wasn’t sure if he could understand me, but he actually nodded his head. Maybe foxes in this world could understand speech? “Very well, do you know what happened here?” He slowly shook his head. “I thought so, but it was worth a try.”

“Do you want to be held?” He nodded his head, and I proceeded to scoop him up in my arms. “Wow, you really are fluffy now.” I pressed my face against his soft fur while I carried him. “Ah, this is bliss!” He barked at me angrily. “Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.”

I carried him against my chest as I walked out of the small building. “Oh, I just realized. You are going to need a name!” I started thinking about names as he wagged his tail looking up at me. “Oh, how about fluffy!” He immediately shook his head rapidly. “No good, huh? Furball? Not good either. Mofu? Snowball? Shiro? Eh? Do you like Shiro?” He was nodding his head fiercely. “Well then, nice to meet you Shiro!” I wasn’t going to tell him that the name wasn’t very creative. He seemed to enjoy it after all.

With that out of the way I made my way over to the other two buildings with Shiro in my arms. Both of the other buildings were empty, and there was no evidence anyone had been here in a long time. The footprints of people would have long since been covered up by the snow anyway. “Well Shiro, do you have any idea how to get to civilization?”

The sly fox nodded his head and turned in a direction before barking. “That way?” He nodded his head again, and like that I was following the directions of a white fox. “Hold on tight, Shiro.” I summoned the ice board under me as I sped off. Shiro didn’t look bothered at all by the change of pace. In fact he looked excited.

After a few hours of journeying Shiro fell asleep, and after going over a hill. I had finally found a change in scenery. In front of me was a large frozen lake, but across from that was a forest with trees covered in snow. I didn’t bother slowing down or stopping at the edge of the lake. The ice looked plenty thick, and my thoughts were proven correct as I glided over it.

I reached the forest and started barreling through it. I weaved around the trees with ease. It helped that the trees weren’t so close together. My ears twitched as they started to pick up the distant sound of voices. I sped up in my excitement as the voices became nearer and nearer. I dismounted the board as I got close, and started to walk towards the voices more slowly. I could see and smell the smoke of a campfire a small distance away.

I sneaked in as close as I could to take in the scene. My eyes could make out the details from quite a distance away, and the voices became audible. 5 male gray wolf kin were huddled around a fire. They had no human features to speak of, except for the fact that they stood upright. “You think we will find them?” One of the wolf kin spoke to a seemingly older one. The older wolf kin pulled a pipe out of his mouth as he released smoke. “I am not sure, but they have to be out here somewhere. I don’t want to believe the alternative.”

One of the other wolfkin with silver plate armor held a spear, and he grunted at them. “I think this is a waste of effort. They disappeared weeks ago, and if they found themselves further north, they are without a doubt dead. Not even I could survive that frozen hellscape. Not to mention the fox spirits. Those damn things haven’t let a single one of our kind cross over in years.”

“Haa, perhaps you are right, Yilk.” The one that I would assume was the youngest there suddenly piped up at that. “What the hell are you talking about, old man!? Are you just going to let them die!?” Suddenly another armored wolf shouted at the others. “Everyone shut the hell up! We are being watched…”

“Shit!”
