Chapter 2: New World, New Clothes

After riding down the road for about 15 minutes, Katherine, the mysterious blindfolded girl, stopped her horse and got down in one swift motion, Jody figured she must be experienced at this, if she tried to get down like this, she would surely fall ugly in front of her once again.

"I think we lost them, but the Crusaders will be warned and will soon be looking for us in the area," Katherine said as she led the horse behind a hill, out of sight of anyone coming down the road.

Jody got off the horse in a clumsy movement, but was already glad he hadn't fallen off again.

"Hi, Katherine, right? are you really real, not some weird dream in my head?", Jody always had weird dreams, and this as real as it looked, was too bizarre to be true.

"Yes I am real, at least I think I am real, and you can call me Kat," she said as she patted her own cheeks as if checking that she was really flesh and blood.

"And exactly where are we? You mentioned the name Kirion, but I've never heard of such a place." Jody was wondering if her knowledge of geography was so bad that she didn't know that place. "And they called me Invader, but I have no idea what that means."

Kat went to a small pouch attached to her horse, picked up a leather bottle, and sat down on the edge of a tree. "Water?" she said as she extended her hand toward Jody.

"No thanks, I think I swallowed some water when I woke up inside that creek."

"Answering your question, we are in Kirion, the great empire of the West, and they called you Invader because that is what you are called here." Kat spoke as she pulled the cork out of her leather bottle, she gave the impression of always being carefree, and Jody thought that was super cool.

"Kirion? is this in America? and who exactly is 'we'?" Jody was trying not to sound stupid. "The last thing I remember is being on the subway, late for animation school, and then this crazy guy with guns showed up, and I kind of jumped on him and then... I died?" Speaking that out loud was so strange that it made Jody wonder if she wasn't losing her sanity.

Kat stood up and removed the cape from her head, revealing her long red hair in a ponytail, two locks of hair falling down the sides of her face, and the yellow "keep out" band stood out like the first time Jody had seen her.

"I have no idea what an America is, and 'you' are those who have recently started popping up in this world, wearing strange clothes, saying strange things, so Kirion has started offering a reward for anyone who captures and arrests anyone who is suspected of being Invaders."

Another world? Jody couldn't believe the words she had just heard, but what other explanation would make sense? she remembered dying, remembered being swallowed by darkness just before waking up in that creek.

"Are you serious? There are others like me in this world? people who have died and appeared here? this is crazy."

"No, I never said people died, of all the Invaders I have ever heard of, none of them died in your world, you are the first." Kat said as she looked at her surroundings. "Usually they remember being there, and then suddenly being here, but nothing about death or anything like that."

"I'm a zombie?!" Jody said as he touched his own face for worms or rotting flesh.

Kat started laughing and said "You're weirder than the other Invaders Jody!"

Jody felt embarrassed to stand in front of a stranger and look so silly and ignorant, but how could she know anything, she was no longer in her world, and everything there was new.

"Come on, we have to get you some less flashy clothes" Kat said as she held out to Jody a cape just like the one she was wearing, "Put this on until we find something better."

Jody put the cape on and asked Kat, "Where exactly are we going?"

"We are going to the No Man's Land, outside of Kirion's territory, there you will be safe, or at least in less danger than here." Jody didn't know if that was good or bad, but Kat was his best chance in this world, so he agreed to go. "Okay, let's go."

The neighing of Kat's horse made Jody startle for a moment, when he looked at the horse, Kat touched his shoulder and said "Don't move," the sound of what sounded like a growl came from a bush just ahead, "A predatory werewolf, in broad daylight, trying to prey on unsuspecting travelers." Werewolf? Jody heard it right ... just when he thought he was understanding that world, everything turned upside down again.

The gray creature advanced in a leap onto the horse, in an instant Kat was no longer at its side, but in mid-air toward the beast, and then Jody heard the words:

"Art of Wind: Tornado Kick!"

Kat spun her body in the air, dodging the creature's claws and hitting a powerful kick to its face, then a whirlpool of air formed and launched the creature spinning violently until it crashed into a tree, the creature rose and with a cry of pain fled through the woods ahead.

"That was amazing!" Jody exclaimed excitedly, perhaps even more excited than she should have been after seeing a werewolf so closely.

When Kat landed on the ground, she was no longer wearing the cape that covered her body, and now Jody could see the mysterious girl's clothes, her fists were covered by something that seemed to be black leather, her outstretched arms revealed her impeccable physical form, her outfit in light shades of green and black gave her a mystical air, on her left shoulder, the tattoo of an inverted pentagram, red as blood, stood out on the girl's pale skin.

"We have to run, you may have heard that, and by the way, where is your Catalyst?" said Kat with a curious look.

"Catalyst? I don't even know what that is!" Jody replied with the face he always made when he had no idea what they were talking about.

Kat brought her hands to her waist and said "I knew I was forgetting something!" in a cocky way, as if she was proud of herself for remembering.

"This thing I just did is called Mystic Art, through a Catalyst, an Esper is able to use the energy called Spirit to manipulate one of the great cosmic forces."

Jody had no idea what he had just heard and all he could answer was, "What?"

"Look I know this is a lot of information, but we don't have time for explanations right now, we need to find your Catalyst and get out of here as soon as possible" Kat said as she put her cloak back on.

"And why would I have a Catalyst? I'm just a normal girl, I don't know how to do magic or whatever" Jody was so confused that she felt like eating, she always felt hungry when she thought about something too much.

"You all have it Jody, that's why Kirion is so interested in capturing you, Invaders from another world, capable of using Spirit, that's something the empire would never accept, you are a threat"

"Okay, but what exactly would this Catalyst be, I have no idea what it could be" For some reason Jody was picturing a colored stone, like a crystal, she wondered if that was a Catalyst?

"It's usually weapons, but it could be just objects too, of which you have an extremely powerful emotional connection, do you have something in mind?" Jody could only think of her plushies that she kept on her bed, she was never one to have a super special object.

"I can't think of anything like that" she said.

"The Invaders always say that right before they were transported to this world, they were in direct contact with their Catalysts, think Jody, you must have let something go unnoticed."

Unnoticed? that was impossible, Jody thought, after all just before she appeared there, she was being shot by a psychotic kid with two.... guns. Yes, the guns that reminded her of her grandfather, that stirred up fear and anger within her, Kat said about having an extremely strong emotional connection, but not necessarily a good one.

"Is that Catalyst only one, or can there be two?" Jody asked in a serious manner.

Kat looked at it curiously "Usually it's only one, but there are cases of people with two, did you remember anything?"

Jody cracked a slight smile and said, "Let's go back to that creek, I think I know what we're looking for."
