I feel like I’m back in high school… Waiting for someone to yell at me for playing games on my phone during class. You sit there, annoyed and terrified trying to think of an excuse so they don’t call your parents or so you don’t have to go to detention.

“You got it all wrong, I was texting my mom.” You plead.

“Rules are rules, no phones. Not even for emergencies!” What a stupid rule.

This goes on and on until one of you gives up. Do you get in trouble or not?

Well, at least that’s probably something like what this situation would’ve felt like. I actually never got in trouble for being on my phone or really in general. It's not I was a good student or anything, I was just good at staying hidden.

Okay but seriously why are we in some office anyway? Yes, there was a fight but we both agreed to it, so why-

“You make me put on this stupid mascot costume, I attract a huge crowd probably worth a bazillion dollars, and that’s somehow not good enough?” Seriously, why is everyone shooting me death stares when I probably made us millions?

“Ester, you don’t understand that was Danny you launched into the Stratosphere.” Ash, buddy, I have no idea who that is.

“Danny? Who the flip is Danny?” No idea.

“You have got to pay more attention. He’s Danny, aka trust fund Danny, a huge contributor to the school. I’m talking buildings in his name, paying the deans’ salaries, hell there’s even a statue of him in the art hall. He’s probably trying to get us expelled.” He explains.

Ah, yes. This is a school for the super-rich. Like one of those overly-dramatic TV shows where the rich people make your life hell just for looking at them without permission.

But this isn’t like a TV show, right?

“Okay, Okay. I get it. You’re bluffing, trying to scare the newbie. First the embarrassing costume, now getting expelled. Good one, really.” Right?

Why isn’t he replying?

I look at Ash and the other members. Guys come on.

They’re dead serious.

“You know what? I refuse to believe this. Yup, this is just some bad dream and I’m actually in my bed hallucinating right now.” Yeah, that’s right. Once I realize I’m dreaming, I’ll wake up soon.

“We’re doomed. Thousands I’m never getting back. Thousands.” Someone says.

Mom is totally going to shove that tuition money so far up my-

The other room door opens.

“Obviously, it’s not looking good for you all, nor me, if I have to keep listening to this guy.” She’s the one who's been talking to Danny.

Even in a situation like this I can’t help but notice how bored she looks. Trust me, I don’t want to be here either.

“I can’t believe blah blah blah. She damaged my blah blah. Off with her blah blaaaah.” She’s mocking Danny? Is that what he sounds like? Honestly, I didn't pay attention to anything he said before the fight. Am I getting expelled by someone this whiny?

“Please, I can’t be expelled. What if I begged? I’ll shine his shoes, clean his statue, do his assignments for a year. Please!” I beg. Maybe this is worth a try?

Maybe...

Nothing, she has no expression change at all.

“I don’t care what you do. All I know is I’m done with this. Good luck or whatever.”

She starts to walk towards the exit.

Is this it? Has my luck run out? Expelled for a stupid fight? It’s kinda funny, isn’t it? In a very pathetic way.

The door opens right before she can leave.

“I was this close.” She mutters.

Who’s there? Someone else to make this even worse-

“Jude! My favorite student council V.P.” I recognize that voice.

The mood in the room completely changes. Everyone looks- stunned?

“Vincent Knight? What’s a noble doing here?” Ash says.

“Probably here to watch the show.” Someone else says-

A noble- Wait- It’s the guy from before.

“Awkward. Awkward. Awkward.” Truly, how could this get even worse?

What have I done to deserve this fate?

“Let me guess, he’s demanding expulsion?” He continues to talk to Jude. Are they friends? Why does that seem sorta impossible?

“You already know how he is, please don’t make me go in there.” She says.

“I won’t, but maybe you could do me a favor and just not do anything? I’ll talk to Danny boy myself.” He says.

“And then I’ll have to hear his tortuous, ode to whine, afterward? You ask so much of me.”

“I’ll make sure you’re free from the fallout.”

“I guess.” She shrugs and then leaves the room.

“What just happened? Are we off the hook?” Someone asks.

Is that what just happened? Really?

The guy starts walking, getting closer and closer to me. Why?

“Hey, long time no see grandmaster.” Kill me now.

“H-hey, you remember that huh? Was hoping I was already a forgotten memory.”

“Impossible, especially after today. Remind me to never get in a fight with you.” He says.

“Sometimes I don’t know my own strength.”

I hear whispers. “She’s friends with a noble?”

Nobl-

“You took off before, so I didn’t get to introduce myself. I’m Vincent.” Vincent- so that’s what he was saying.

“Ester, and yeah sorry about that… I had to uh- do something at home.”

“Let me guess, play Union of Fables? How else will you become mega grandmaster?”

“Ah, death, so soothing a thought.” Gods be merciful and strike me down now.

“Alright, alright. I’m sorry, please forgive me.” Vincent says then turns to face everyone else.

“I guess I have you guys to thank for that wonderful show?”

“N-no, well yes sir. You see we just wanted Ms. Faye here, to bring some traction to the club. We definitely didn’t mean for it to escalate to violence.” Okay, stop- Ms. Faye? Why is Ash acting so weird? Why is everyone acting so WEIRD?

“I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but I’m glad it did. As a thank you, I’ll make sure you guys aren’t expelled.” Vincent says.

I’ve never felt more relieved, seriously. But how can he even do that? Is he friends with some other super-rich person?

“We definitely don’t deserve your kindness sir. We’ll make sure to repay you one day.” Sir? What is going on? Am I suddenly in a soap?

“What’s with all the formalness?” I ask. I get being polite I guess? But this is on another level.

A ton of death stares aimed at me.

“What?”

Seems like this fiasco is over. Luckily we didn’t get expelled thanks to Vincent. Which still has me super confused, but as long as I’m not expelled I really don’t care… It’s just me and Ash left in the room.

“Shouldn’t you be happy? We didn’t get expelled.” He still seems out of it. Which I get, but come on.

“You don’t get it at all.” He sighs.

“Get what?” I ask.

“I’m still trying to figure out how you know Vincent Knight.” Okay, so obviously my hunch was right and Vincent is someone super important.

“It’s a long story.” I’m not getting into that.

“You really don’t know who he is do you?” He asks.

Isn’t he just some rich guy?

“He’s a noble.” Ash continues.

Noble?

“She’s friends with a noble?”

“N-no, well yes sir.”

“We definitely don’t deserve your kindness sir. We’ll make sure to repay you one day.”

Noble. He’s a noble... He’s a NOBLE.

America has its presidents, England its kings and queens, and for mages we have nobles.

Sure you have your regular famous people. Think movie stars, singers, celebrities. But, you see, nobles are something totally different. Apparently, they’re blessed by Genesis herself. I’m not even religious but even I can tell that’s serious. Imagine having a goddess on your side. It's like the Pope, but multiplied and different families of Popes.

“A noble? Like one of the families ruling over ALL the mages while wearing capes and big shiny crowns?” I ask, and all Ash does is nod.

“And I just ran up to him all nerdy, calling myself a grand master? I’m an uber nerd, I’ve got nerd oozing out my pores. Please end
my suffering, seriously.”
