“What the hell…”

Wow. There are a lot of people here.

A lot.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the school so busy before… What’s even going on? There are stalls everywhere in the courtyard-

My nose reacts on its own. There’s a smell in the air, it’s heavenly.

Well, I might as well go check it out right? After all, it’s something for school and I should try to become a more well-rounded student- Does this mean I get to skip class?

There are stalls for everything-

The boring stuff like: “Wanting to become a house owner at 25?” and “The best ways to pass this semester.”

The ones you walk really fast past so they don’t end up talking to you.

The good-ish stuff like vintage clothes and and music. Gotta love the retro am I right? There’s even stuff I haven’t seen before. Cool.

But the most awesome stuff of all is the food.

“Come try our famous chicken kabobs! You know you want to!” Don’t mind if I do.

Next stall-

“Hey interested in joining our club?”

“That depends on what you’re offering.” I reply.

Next stall-

“Don’t be shy come on up.” Say less.

“Aye aye, captain.”

I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m in heaven.

“Hey! You can’t just take all the samples.”

“Who says?” Why else is it free then?

My hands are filled with samples.

So. So. Good.

I wonder if I could sneak back around and get more-

Hey- a girl's gotta eat after all… Where do you think all the muscle comes from?

I spot some familiar faces… It’s the combat club.

Our stall has a bunch of fighting gear like gloves, punching bags, and powders- Protein, Whey, Crazy Nutrition, you name it.

“Faye, good to see you.” It’s Ash, the buff guy.

“Hey, prez.” I say still filling my face.

“You sure don’t waste time.” He sees my precious spoils.

“As they say, if it’s there for the taking.” I reply.

“Any chance you know what’s going on?” I ask as I take another bite. Do I mention how good this stuff is?.

I’m still clueless about what's going on. As you can probably tell I don’t check calendars.

“Really? You don’t know?” He seems surprised. Do I really like look I keep up with school stuff?

“Not a clue.”

“You’re not involved much in school are you?” Ash is catching on.

“Nope.”

“Well, it’s the most important event of the year for clubs, the Fund-Fundraiser.” Huh?

“The Fund-what?” Did I hear that right?

“The Fund-Fundraiser, dumb as hell name I know. Basically, a bunch of potential investors show up to survey all the clubs East U has to

offer. The ones they like the most get the money they need to keep running, while the others wither away.” He explains.

“I didn’t know things were so high stakes.” This school is truly something.

“Especially, for us this year... As you can guess, we’re very niche, and not that many people are into this kinda thing. One year we struck gold and found a very willing investor. Unfortunately, she’s no longer with us.” This suddenly took a dark turn…

“I’m sorry, R.I.P…” Sorry to whoever you are.

“Oh- No, she’s not dead just out of the country.”

“But she might as well be since the money well has dried up.” Someone else chimes in.

Is the club really dunzo? Not when we have such a good thing going...

“Calm down, I’m sure the mascot will save us like it did last time.” Ash looks at a pretty old-looking costume. It’s some kinda animal I guess?

“The mascot?” I ask-

Wait, why are they looking at me like that?

Un-fucking-believable.

“I can’t believe Ash is making me do this…” Here I am standing like a dumbass in this costume holding a sign…

Not one person has even looked my way. How is that even possible? I mean seriously??? At least no one can tell I’m in here. No one really knows who I am anyway… But still-

“E-Everyone, come see the combat club, woo! Get all that pent-up frustration out! When class has got you down, all you need is a punching bag around.”

Please.

Anybody?

Someone save me from my suffering…

Okay! Come on this is pathetic, let’s up the ante. Remember this is to save the club.

Save.

The.

Club.

I throw the sign up. Pretty high, which gives me enough time to wow the crowd.

Back Walkover

The sign comes back down to Earth. Time for Round 2-

Round 3?

Still no one??? I just reenacted the Olympics!

I look towards the club. Some members are clapping at the show I just put on.

Thank you.

But that doesn’t help.

At all.

I give up.

I point at the people walking by. I don’t care who it is.

“Hey, you! Bet I could kick your ass, easy.” I got someone’s attention.

Good.

It feels like there’s an even bigger crowd than before now. Can’t say I’m surprised. Who doesn’t want to see a random school fight? I mean this is really random. I’m about to fight some guy for this club… Well, I could think of worse things. And this is probably the best way to promote a fighting club.

This guy… How long is he gonna warm up? I’m just watching him jumping up and down, throwing punches, like in a scene from Rocky.

In the crowd, someone’s trying to get my attention- Is that Ash? He’s probably just worried that I’m going to lose.

“Don’t worry.” I give him a thumbs up. Now, back to my opponent.

“You ready? Or are you gonna warm up forever?” I’m taunting him on purpose. Now he’s annoyed. Like a bull seeing red.

He doesn’t waste any time and lunges at me. He’s fast. Magic is flowing from his legs.

I take a step back. Dodging the first punch.

Another step. Dodging the next.

I’ll wait for the perfect time to strike.

We’ve been going in circles, literally, me just avoiding his punches.

Time to change things up a bit, I stop moving.

He smirks.

This is his chance-

But also mine.

The next punch he throws connects this time.

The mascot's head goes flying off.

But- so does this guy. I land a clean hit.

The crowd is silent.

He really went flying. It took a few seconds before he landed back on the ground. It was like a scene from an anime, you know when the bad guys go flying and there’s a sparkle in the sky? Yeah like that.

Okay, I’m probably stronger than average, but that literally felt like hitting paper. No resistance at all.

I really don’t know my own strength.

Did I just kill him?
