I feel better. I feel like I can fight again. That's why I went out for a hunt today, and thanks to my new wolf companion's advanced olfactory receptors, we found a deer recently injured by one of my traps. A small group of scavengers was watching the poor thing from a distance when we arrived, waiting for it to die from bleeding. Thankfully, my presence was enough to scare them off, and we captured our meal without a problem.

I killed the poor creature on the point and put it on my shoulders for carrying. After that, it was a dash back to the cave. Blood messed my clothes up a bit while running, but who cares? My head was full of the thoughts of eating a fulfilling meal after days of rationing and stopping most likely meant a stronger monster trying to snitch our dinner.

Thankfully, nothing happened, and we safely arrived back at the cave. As a first thing, I quickly skinned the deer and put the organs outside, where my new companion had a feast on them while I prepared the meat for consumption.

I won't gain anything from sitting on my ass, waiting for something to happen. Voice doesn't answer me no matter how much I ask for a hint on the location of my next challenge. Neither I feel like studying any more magic. I spent most of my free time through my recovery either reading, sleeping, or taking short walks around the cave to see if anything dangerous approached, and despite all that effort, I made minimal progress.

I must find an exit fast as I can, and the best way seems to be killing the next boss monster and leaving this area, preferably to a human settlement where I can eat proper food and sleep on a real bed. After that, I can think about my options for the rest of my life. Maybe I can work something like a mercenary or a guard till time finally reaches me and try living with the money I made. But before all of that, I must find an exit.

I am ready for my next quest. I used the skin of the deer I hunted as a large sack to carry much food and water for my new companion and me. Other than that, my arsenal is full of weapons, from spears and a polehammer to a long sword.

My plan is this, I will move in the morning to avoid any ambushes from large predators and night hunters and will rest on top of the trees at night and move the second first beam of sunlight hits the ground. I don't exactly know where to go, but there is a tall hill three days' walk away from me(but I can shorten it to two), which I can climb to scout the surroundings and see if there are any points of interest.

"So, you finally reached this point, dear Wolf."

A gentle voice echoed inside my mind, one of a woman. "So, who are you, the half-working thing inside my head that was supposed to help me or someone else, maybe one of those who summoned me here," I spoke into the nothingness. "Either way, talk fast."

"I am neither the broken guide graved into your soul nor one of the beings who called you here for their entertainment. I am nothing but a humble goddess of religion who lost most of its worth centuries ago. But I feel guilty for what my peers have done by playing with your life, and I am ready to offer help long as my powers allow me to."

That soft voice can manipulate most who are in a desperate situation. At least (I hope) my mind is strong enough to hold against it till I can dig some truth. "Who are you."

"As I said, I am nothing but the goddess of religion who lost most of its worth centuries ago. One of the ones who saved you from the hands of ones who wanted to corrupt you."

"How exactly did you save me?" I wonder if something is causing me to hallucinate. Maybe a more powerful version of those snow fairies.

For that question, I need to explain why you are here, Wolf. Or should I call you the Lich King, as many will know you by that name in the future?"

"You are skipping answers, and what is a Lich King? Please do not mind explaining things to me."

"Pardon me. People they summon into this world have a rough idea about how it works. I forgot how you don't read fantasy stories as others."

"If my greatest sin is not reading one kind of literature, spare me of your peers' bullshit and explain to me as I am a mindless fool who knows nothing."

"As you need knowledge, let me tell you the story. We, the twenty gods and goddesses of this world, got into a fight with each other for a reason mortals cannot understand and dragged our believers into it."

"Far as I know, there weren't twenty gods in my world, nor a fight between them."

"You will be surprised if you knew the real truths of the universe, but I will spare you the knowledge you shouldn't know. Now, back to my explanation. Ten of us lost the war, and the balance of this world got changed since then. The ten evil gods are currently seeing this world as a gameboard and bringing mortals from different worlds as characters for their games, and they choose you to play the role of Lich King, a threat the heroes sent by the gods need to overcome."

"And what is about the corruption you saved me from." That doesn't make sense, but neither bears the size of school buses or firing ice from my fingers.

"Ten gods want to be sure that every piece plays their part, but there is a chance that their pieces might rebel against their will, so they did what they do, they intervene. You have a seed on that guideline that they planted to corrupt you into a battle-loving beast who will raise armies of death and try to destroy every living being if you don't naturally become through their plans."

"But, you saved me from that? Now I am only a battle-loving beast who cannot raise armies of death. I talk with you as you know my story, but remember that I am a soldier with unhealthy tendencies toward violence. I think I even have a medical something about that." Why is she even dragging this conversation? Just tell me if you have anything helpful and go away.

"And a soldier who can sacrifice to protect what you love. Despite who you see yourself as I believe having you keep your sanity is a better choice for this world. After all, unlike them, I care about the lives of this world's creatures."

"So, you care about mine?"

"Yes. That's why I asked others to intervene and let you keep your free will and some parts of your humanity. You are not a full Lich but an abomination that works against the system they created. Remember when you got your first reward and how much it hurt you? That's because of the problem our intervention caused."

"And what is that system you speak of?"

"Maybe I will explain it another time, but not today. I must keep my words short. Move towards where the sun goes down for two days. You will see a castle there. Your final target waits there. But be careful." So, she finally decided to tell me something that counts to me.

"Then, if I know my next step tell me who you are."

"Yes, dear Wolf, yes you do. I am the goddess of Mercy, and in my very existence, I found happiness in helping the mortal creatures in their lives, but I will ask something selfish from you."

I got into all these things the second I awoke in this place, no, the second they put their eyes on me. At least I can see how it ends. "Tell me."

"After the battle, evil gods played favorites on humans and let them conquer, enslave, pillage, and kill other creatures until they created the massive thing they call the Empire, which now somewhat rules most of the world. You must get rid of it."

"You want me to demolish, or at least weaken Empire, so there will be a chance for you to bring balance back."

"Yes!" She was excited. "Yes, dear Wolf, but don't worry, you will not need to defeat the Empire. A single deep wound on their golden throne will be enough to shatter their foundation, maybe not in a short time, but will in the long."

"Wait!" I shouted. The wolf waiting next to me looked at me with curious eyes. "There are still many questions you didn't answer, damn it!"

"Sorry, Wolf, but I can only explain one more thing, my time is limited."

"Then tell me, what will be my reward if I do what you said?" I need some motivation. After all, dancing for free is not something I like to do.

"What your heart desires."

Once again, an open gate, but one with good scenery on the other side.

"Goodbye, Wolf, may the luck be with you."

The sound of the goddess is gone.

"Now everything is much more complicated than it was before." I looked towards my companion looking at me, then crouched to pat his head. "Come one, buddy. We got promoted from trying to survive to destroying empires. Let's celebrate that by finishing our business here fast as we can."
