A summary. I faced the last boss of my first quest, almost killed in two strikes, and sold my body to ancient souls seeking vengeance from gods for an hour with no guarantee to take it back. After that point, I somehow survived the fight, opened my eyes outside the forest I got trapped in, and finally, I encountered a carriage ambushed by bandits.

I decided to play the hero and killed almost every bandit, but one of them managed to escape from my attention and almost landed a vital strike on me, but I got saved.

"Well, look at all this mess, lots of bodies to bury and burn. At least the passengers look good." One ranger moved closer to me and put his hand on my shoulder in a friendly manner. He has a sparrow-shaped amulet on his chest. "Gotta thank you, big guy. These three are important. They were lucky you stumbled on them on your way."

"After hearing what bandits were planning, it is only right for a man to step up. So, back to my question, where can I find the closest settlement."

"Hey, hey, don't be too fast. Let's check if our passengers have any wounds or something. Kids look terrified, well at least one of them." Ranger pointed towards the little girl playing with the wolf. Good boy, a pet can help them recover from this event.

I began moving with the flow and approached the passengers. The little girl seems already over with the whole bandit ambush. She is busy playing with my fluffy companion. Still, the other two aren't doing that great. The boy looks traumatized. I can see that he barely stopped himself from crying in front of the bandits, but I can't say that for the pants. Still, he is brave. Even to the last second, he held a sword. I turned to the woman next to them. She is doing better than I anticipated.

"Need some help." I offered my hand to the lady.

"Thank you." She grabbed it, and I carefully pulled her up. She is light as a feather, or I became too strong after escaping that forest. I don't know, but it is good to know that I have some strength. "Thank you, kind sir. Not many are brave enough to risk their lives for people they don't know."

I smirked. "I met many people who risked their lives for people they don't know. Morons like us are much more common than you think." Pechman, Ronald, and many others from my team are younger than me. Their reason for joining the military was also different from mine. I was there for revenge. They were there to protect.

"I wish to believe in your words, but it is rare for people to use this road, even rarer than bandits terrorizing it. I want to forget that unfortunate event soon as I can, so tell me what you seek in this part of the kingdom." This part of the kingdom, so this place is ruled by monarchs. Good to know that.

"I am a traveler with nowhere to go. I go where winds throw me up, and in recent days, the wind threw me into some crazy places, which drained most of my money and rations. I am currently looking for somewhere to settle." I can twist the truth around.

"How fortunate we were heading towards a large town. I suppose a man of your skills can find a job there. I like you to escort me there. I can then pay you for your help."

"No need for that, I didn't protect you for money, but it was rather an instinct." Being this friendly to strangers may not be the wisest move, but I prefer trust over money. It is not that I am all dried up. I still have a pouch of coins in my bag.

"My, but I don't think you are declining my offer."

"That, I can accept."

"I am glad."

I turned towards the boy and offered him my hand. "You did well. Not many can hang on to their weapons when that scared. You have the hearth."

The boy looked at my hand with empty eyes. He didn't say anything for some time, then just shook his head and said. "I am sorry. Please leave me alone."

"If it's your wish." I moved away from the kid, then towards the little girl petting my wolf's head. My companion looked pretty happy with the attention. He even put his tongue out like a pet dog getting patted. I wonder if I adopted a golden or a wild beast.

"He seems to like you. He is usually not friendly towards strangers."

"But mister doggy looks so friendly. How can he be not friendly?" She didn't even turn toward me. I suppose she is too busy playing with her new friend. Oh, to be this careless in life.

"He is not a doggy but a wolf."

"A wolf? Like the big scary ones, but he isn't scary." Didn't that wolf rip apart a man's face minutes ago? I suppose she missed that part. "Hey, what's his name."

"His name." Huh, I didn't think about that. Well, if he is going to hang with me, he at least deserves a name. Well, what name will be suitable for a predator? No, what name will go well for a family dog? Heh. "His name is Fluffy."

"Fluffy? That's a cute name. No one with a cute name can be dangerous. So Fluffy is not dangerous. Right Fluffy?" Wolf didn't respond to the girl's question, but I can swear he glared at me with killing intent for a second.

"Now, can I take Fluffy away for some time?"

"No!"

"Well, I am going to the town you guys are going to. I promise you that you can play with it in the future."

"Promise?" She looked at me with sparkling eyes.

"Promise."

"Then you can take him, I suppose." She got up and began moving towards the woman comforting the boy.

Ranger approached me again. "So, if this talk is over, shall we also properly greet each other? My name's Ruckus, and as you can see, I am the captain of our town's ranger squad. If you don't know, our job is to scout the surrounding area for threats. Rather be bandits, poachers, monsters, or raiders."

"Name's Erwin. I am a traveler with nowhere to go and a heavy burden on my back."

"Expected from a man like you. What's your reason? What do you pursue, perhaps revenge, a war to win? A good story is always okay with me, so tell yours."

"No. I don't have anything left to take revenge, and I have no wars to participate in, at least for now. See me as a mindless traveler going town to town."

Ruckus began inspecting my armor. "But I don't think what I see in front of me is just another mindless traveler. Are you a hunter?" Hunter? Oh, I suppose I read about them in the Adventurers Handbook. They are mercenaries who take missions for money.

"No, I am not."

"What a shame, but you seem to be dwelling in monster nests. That pelt you are wearing and your equipment, I don't think you bought them with money?"

"Huh."

"Hah, sorry, I don't mean anything. After all, what you take from a monster is rightfully yours. Law states that. I only want to know why a man like you is around here."

What to lie, what to lie. Ah, I think I know. "I am an exile. I have nowhere to go and nothing other than my sword to trust. I got lost and found myself in a damned forest filled with all sorts of monsters and barely escaped with my life after months of surviving." Most of this is true to some degree.

"A damned forest, ey? That damned fur explains it. Well, bombarding you with questions middle of nowhere is equally uncomfortable for me. So, what you say when we hit the town, I treat you to some food, and we share some drinks while you tell your story. After all, as a ranger, stopping potentially dangerous people is also a part of my job, but I don't need to do that uncivilized way."

I nod. "I much prefer your way too. Now, what are we waiting for, a legal approval? I am so hungry I can eat a quarter of a livestock by myself."

"Hah, I believe in you, but I'll be damned if I don't say I am not afraid of that appetite. Try to keep it low when ordering, okay?"

I smirked. "I try to, but don't take that as a promise."

"Here goes my bonus then, damn it. Well, let's move." I suppose I found some friendly people. If I can strike a job in their town and make a stable income, I can live away from all that overthrowing Empire bullshit.
