After it turned out that Rachel was seriously ill, I had to stay at her estate all night.
I was almost constantly at the girl's bedside, constantly running for water and rags, and in general everything that could somehow help in this situation.
As it turned out, there were no medicines in the house, and even the most common medicinal herbs. Therefore, I had to use random improvised means.
Remembering how my mother used to beat my fever when I was a kid, I boiled a whole pot of hot water and made Rachel breathe over it. Although she tried to push me away, she was so weak that she couldn't resist and eventually accepted my presence.
Once I'd given her all the first aid she needed, I had to rely on Rachel's own strength. Such a high temperature for any normal person could be fatal. I could only hope that Rachel would be able to hold out until tomorrow morning.
I sighed as I sat down by her bed, completely exhausted. I had to work half the night tending to Rachel, and even now I couldn't sleep a wink. In case of another attack, I was supposed to be constantly on duty and monitor her condition.
I couldn't understand how she got so sick.
Rachel always seemed to me like a person who couldn't be broken even by an atomic war or a natural disaster. And here, she was so seriously ill because of a common cold.
But was it really just a cold...?
I was too exhausted to think about it, though. If she wants to, Rachel can tell me all about it when she wakes up. Unless, of course, she throws me out as soon as she gets her strength back.
Right now, the girl was sleeping peacefully and looked completely harmless. The first wave of heat had subsided, and she was finally breathing normally. Just in case, I decided to check her temperature again by putting my hand to her forehead.
But as I brushed my dark bangs out of my face, Rachel suddenly stirred. Before that, despite her more or less stable condition, she was lying motionless, as if in a coffin.
Still wide awake, Rachel clung to my arm in a surprisingly iron grip. So much so that I couldn't even let go of her fingers.
A completely unrecognizable crying voice came out of her mouth, "Mom...!"
Apparently, Rachel was now under the influence of a delusional dream as one of the symptoms of the disease. And it was so heavy that she even began to cry in her sleep.
It was the first time I'd seen her like this.
Rachel had never shown me her real emotions before. And I thought she didn't have any.
"Mom..." the girl continued to mumble this incoherent word, sobbing every now and then.
Since my hand was still in "captivity", I decided to give up and also took her hand. Sighing, I looked at her with a thoughtful expression.
While delirious, Rachel called out to her mother. A woman I'd never heard of before.
Come to think of it, I didn't know anything about Rachel's family except that her father was Duke Cassius. Despite the fact that she was the mother of the main male character, Rachel herself was almost never revealed.
Apart from the memories directly related to Robert himself, nothing was mentioned about her former life. In the same way, no one would think to tell in detail about the life of a minor character who dies before the plot begins.
Rachel's father never appeared in the novel, and neither did her mother. So I had no idea what had become of them. And what kind of relationship does she have with them at all...?
Because the author didn't bother to add these details to the novel, I'll have to find out for myself. However, in such a short period of time, I learned a lot more about Rachel herself than was indicated in those insignificant flashbacks from the past.
So, I would gradually get to everything else.
While I was thinking about all this, my head touched the bed completely unnoticed. Despite the fact that I struggled with sleep in every possible way, my body eventually broke down.
I closed my eyes and fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, I clearly felt that someone had been staring at the back of my head for a long time.
Startled, and realizing with horror that I'd fallen asleep after all, I looked up and met Rachel's gaze.
The girl sat up in bed and stared at me with her red pupils. Her expression remained completely unperturbed.
She must have woken up a long time ago.
"R-Rachel...? Didn't you have a fever?"
Even though Rachel had been on the edge of life and death last night, her situation was much better now. The state of delirium had passed, and she was looking at me with clear eyes.
"It's all right."
But this short answer wasn't enough for me.
Shaking off the last vestiges of sleepiness, I rushed to check her temperature, but the girl stopped me.

"I told you. I'm all right," she said, frowning, "There's nothing to check. Go already."
Even though I sat with her all night, it didn't occur to Rachel to thank me. Instead, she immediately started to chase me away.
Although, with my experience of dealing with her, I had long been used to the fact that I could not count on a warm welcome.
Instead, I indignantly told her:
"What do you mean, I'm fine? Do you even know that when I arrived, you almost died?!"
Rachel glanced at me, annoyed.
"I could have done it without you. Do you think I'm that weak?"
"Yes, and here it is. No human could stand the heat like this!"
"This is a feature of my body, I have long been accustomed," the girl waved away. "This happens several times a year. And without your help, I still haven't died."
I couldn't help but be taken aback.
"So it's a chronic disease?"
Rachel didn't like the way I was staring at her. To get rid of me, she even gave me a lot of explanations so that I would finally fall behind.
"It's a thing from my childhood," she said sourly, "my father said it should pass when I grow up. So no matter what, I won't die."
I stopped talking.
This information was extremely unexpected for me. I had no idea that Rachel was suffering from a chronic illness. And, even more surprisingly, she managed to hide it while studying at the academy. Although… At the same time, excerpts from the original novel flashed through my mind.
In" Bloody Camellia", Robert Cassius suffered from exactly the same syndrome. When Britney and the main male character met, she learned that from time to time he fell into a state during which he was on the verge of life and death. Looking for ways to cure his illness, it eventually passed by itself. Whether it was the piano in the bushes, or the author simply did not attach importance to this storyline, but Robert became completely healthy after he and Britney fell in love with each other.
However, in the main plot, the place given to this was so scanty that most readers did not pay attention to this moment. And so was I.
I thought that these symptoms were entirely Robert's specialty. But what I didn't know was that Rachel was also suffering from it. Is this some kind of family illness...?
While I was still thinking about this mysterious illness, Rachel tried to kick me out again.
"How much longer are you going to be here? Leave."
This was my home, and I wasn't allowed to come here?
Rachel's usual mood increased in proportion as her strength returned. Now, she could fight me back if she wanted to.
However, I decided not to give in to my initial fears and insist on my own. After all, who else could take care of her but me?
"I'll be right back," I announced, "and I'll tell the professor you won't be in class, and I'll bring you some medicine."
"Why? I told you, it's all gone!"
I was probably like a pesky fly to her right now, but I didn't care. For these three years, Rachel was my shield, so how could I let anything happen to her?
"Be good and wait for me," I said, despite her indignation, "You can send me away as much as you want, and I'll still stay."
Rachel exhaled heavily.
"Why you…"
Although she didn't finish her sentence, the further context was quite clear. Most likely, there was some indecent insult behind it.
"...Remember that if you bring me something nasty, I won't drink it."
With a grunt, she got back into bed and turned her face to the wall. In Rachel's language, it meant that she was resigned to her situation.
I chuckled.
"You see, sometimes we can come to an agreement."
