Rory raised his arms in an attempt to lessen the impact, though what he achieved was two broken arms, a shattered rib cage, and a cracked skull for his troubles.
The car responsible didn't slow down at all, proceding to crush his bones beneath it's tires as it sped away, the usually quiet street full of screams of disbelief and panic.
Some people after ascertaining that there weren't any more reckless drivers rushed to Rory's body, but upon examining him closer, even those without a degree who had just an inkling of medical knowledge knew he was going to die.
Rory saw people approach, but no matter how much he tried to move his mouth, to ask for help, he couldn't as his body refused his commands. Some of the more observant people could tell from how limp his body was that his spine had been damaged.
Words and voices all merged into an ever present noise that wouldn't fade, constantly buzzing in Rory's ears like a small fly that wouldn't go away no matter how much he tried to shoo it away.
"If everything transpires the way it should, you'd cease to exist in another thirty seconds. Do you have any thoughts about that?" A voice clearer than those around him sounded drawing his fading consciousness back into focus if but for a moment.
He couldn't move nor speak, but Rory imagined that the person who spoke was a man judging from the voice. Aside from the voice that reverberated like a heavenly decree, everything else slowed down to a crawl, from what Rory could see.
"You won't be able to speak or move, so we'll have to settle for reading your thoughts for now. I won't pry too deep, don't worry." The voice continued after Rory realized the pain had faded away.
"Death to you was a form of escape. A way out if you will, to another life perhaps? But how would you feel if you knew that after death was nothing, the complete and total erasure of your existence?"
"You wanted to die in the hopes of gaining a second chance, a chance to start anew. Sadly, death isn't what you speculated. Time here passes at a fraction of what it should normally, but time still passes and you will soon arrive at the precipice."
"You will have a choice then. To fade away as the Natural Laws demand, or to resist and remain. What will you choose? To resist means a fate worse than death, but to fade away, some might say is worse than death itself."
Rory couldn't help but feel a sense of loss, created from the fact that after death was nothing, the complete removal of your existence. He longed for a chance to try again, but death didn't grant that.
Remaining and resisting? Rory felt a horrible sensation when he thought of doing so, as if what awaited him if he chose that option was a fate he could only regret endlessly forever.
But, he would still exist to feel regret, and fading away meant that he would no longer exist, ever. He normally wouldn't gamble with such high stakes, but he didn't want to fade, so he made a decision.
"Good. You have the resolve to exist even though it's against the Natural Laws. Since you bear the will to resist your fate, I shall grant to you a gift to help you in your endeavor."
"You may sometimes regret your choice, but know this, you were far braver than most. Regret only exists if you exist, so continue to do so and perhaps you can regain what you've lost in time."
Regain what he had lost? Rory didn't know what this person meant, but he would find out it he could. The world that had slowed to a crawl started to speed up, and a presence Rory wasn't aware existed faded away.
His body was immediately wracked with pain, but that too vanished along with the world around him. He finally felt something, a vast undeniable pressure that pressed down on him from all sides.
Information appeared in Rory's mind, and the choice he was told about arrived, To Conform and Fade, or to Resist and Exist. This unimaginable pressure that surpassed even the person's own from before suffocated him.
Perhaps he would suffer on this path, but he would still exist, so he made his choice. Rejecting the idea of fading away, a presence that surpassed the world descended, threatening to crush his very existence, but it vanished as quickly as it came.
