High Priest Abel's eyebrows furrowed in disapproval. “You know what you’re asking me to do, right?”
All Priests must report everything that is imperative back to the Holy Temple. And Abel wasn’t just any ordinary Priest. Not only was he one of the five High Priests, he was the next candidate to become the Cardinal. He would have long taken on his Father’s, the current Cardinal’s mantle but hates being tied down to one place.
“Yes. I know this will be difficult for you and for Dorsen to hide this. Eventually, everyone will find out. This is only to buy me some time.”
“Time? Time for what?” Dorsen asked confused.
“Rune Mage Dorsen, you’ve dedicated your time to studying runes. Surely, you can find out where she came from and what happened during the ritual.” Since young, he enjoyed researching rune magic. He’s already made many contributions to the Magic Research Institute.
Dorsen stood up and clapped his hands. “Right! Those rings that mysteriously appeared. Why were there so many? The rings tell us what rank the familiar is…but what if that’s not all?” He started pacing around, with his hand on his chin as he mumbled. “If I can figure that out, I might be able to know more about her.” He stopped pacing and looked up. “All right! I’ll look into this for you!”
Lucius smiled slightly and nodded his head. He turned his attention back to Abel.
The Priest sighed. “The Holy Temple have many rules. Some can be overlooked, but some will always be enforced. That includes the rule that all Witches must come under the protection of the Holy Temple. Although the last Witch hasn’t been seen for about fifty years now, this still hasn’t changed.”
“I know…”
Abel shrugged his shoulders. “Well, fortunately for Duke Rizar, I have never been one to follow the rules. And besides, if we put her under our protection, we’d have to void the familiar contract between you two. This will cause you and her unfathomable pain and it might even damage your mana core.” A familiar contract is a bond. Once made, it can’t be broken until death. And if forcibly broken, a large price must be paid.
Dorsen smirked at him. “Why don’t you stop pretending? We both know you’d never do anything to harm him.”
“But Your Grace…” Abel called out. “What do I do when recording what familiar you summoned?”
The summoning ritual only summons spirit beasts from the spirit world. Although there used to be spirit beasts that lived in the human world a long time ago, after the Black Witch's curse and the appearance of the Corrupted Region, the spirit beasts retreated back to the spirit world.
Spirit beasts are categorized into three types, combat, armor and mount. Combat beasts specialize in attacking enemies close up. Armor beasts focus on defense and ranged attacks. And mount spirit beasts are mostly flying types and specialize in scouting.

The previous Duke’s familiar was a red lion that specialized in combat. “Simple. Tell them I summoned a baby Golden Crown eagle.”
“...That is indeed a Sacred Familiar. And if I say it was just born, it will give you many excuses to keep your familiar hidden in your mansion. You’ll still have to reveal it during the ceremony for the Grand Purging in front of the Emperor. What then?”
“Don’t worry, I have an idea.”
Seeing how stubborn the Duke was, Abel relented. “Fine, fine.” Abel waved his hand. “Do what you will.”
Turning around, the Duke of Rizar faced the fireplace.
Lucius' eyes narrowed dangerously, revealing a fragment of darkness as he thought about the consequences if these two weren’t here. After all, if it was someone else, he’d have no choice but to get rid of them. Thankfully, it didn’t come to that. For Lucius, people are divided into groups.
Those he cares for and those he doesn't.
And those who are useful and those who are not.
He glanced over the parchment one last time. Abel and Dorsen were so focused on her being a Witch that they did not notice the question marks behind her name and titles. It’s normal for the skills of a familiar to be hidden, but everything else should be clear as day to a Priest.
This woman lying on his bed surely has a story to tell. And he was interested in unraveling it.
He felt that this mysterious woman was the key to understanding that region. He might find a way to protect the Dukedom and get rid of this so-called blessing that has been nothing but a curse to him and his family.
Lucius Rizar is someone who doesn’t care about power or glory. Since young, after that incident when he took the life of someone important to him with his own hands, he no longer cared for his future. He only did what needed to be done. And to that end, he'd use anyone who could be used.
He threw the parchment in the fire and watched as it burned, turning into ashes.
