The last thing Aurora remembers before dying is pain.
Unimaginable pain.
But the pain she felt was strange. It didn't feel like it came from being burned. Still, with the pain she was subjected to, she didn't bother thinking about it. What was clear to her was that she died by the hands of a person she once called Father.
Soon the pain disappeared as if it wasn’t there in the first place and she found herself floating in never-ending darkness. It felt as if she was flying in a dark space. She tried to move around, and although she did, she couldn’t control the direction. Sometimes she’d go up. Sometimes she’d come down. Or sometimes she’d move to her right or her left.
When she tried moving certain parts of her body, she realized her body wasn’t there. She couldn’t feel a thing! She only noticed the darkness. Nothing she tried worked, so she gave up.
Is this how it is when you die?
And so, time passed. She doesn’t know how much time but she knows it was a very long time. Days, months or even years. Eventually, she lost her sense of time and even lost her sense of self. She no longer remembered her appearance…the sound of her voice…and even who she is.
She fell into a deep sleep until a bright light and a voice woke her up.
“I, Lucius…eldest son of…command you, come forth…my lifelong partner.”
The voice wasn’t calling for her but, for some reason, she was pulled to it. Even if he wasn’t calling her name, it was the first voice she heard since coming to this place of nothingness. In desperation, she tried calling out, but her voice refused to come out.
As if being sucked in towards the light, she found herself towards it. And then in front of her appeared a strange room filled with men. The moment she saw this, she wanted to ask where she was. She wanted to get up and run, and yet, she could only tremble in fright.
The man at the very front with red hair and intense blue eyes stood out amongst the others. Wearing black and red clothing with silver embroidery, he carried the aura of a noble.
Her ears were ringing, and she couldn’t hear what they were saying. When the two scary men with swords behind him stepped forward, she scrambled back. Seeing that they frightened her, they stopped. The man with red hair slowly went on one knee and taking off his long-sleeved silky jacket, he held it out for her.
He didn’t move forward and stayed in the same place as he patiently waited for her to accept it.
When seeing his eyes meet hers, she was afraid at first, but when he didn't look away, she thought that this person wouldn’t hurt her. She remembered something someone once told her. She doesn’t remember who told her, their voice or even if they were male or female…but for some reason, this situation reminded her of it.
“When a person looks you straight in the eyes, they are revealing their heart to you. At least for that moment. So, for that one single moment, you can place your trust in them. But remember, only for that one single moment. After all, a trust misguided brings nothing but destruction.”
Aurora then decided to trust this person for now. She reached out her quivering hand to accept the clothing, but before she could, a sharp pain traveled through her body and she lost consciousness.

When she came to, she found herself in an unfamiliar room. Although the room was magnificent in size and beauty, there wasn’t a single decorated piece. The heavy brown drapes blocked out most of the sun, giving the room a gloomy vibe.
“Good morning Miss.”
“Good morning Miss.”
Two young girl’s voices echoed out. Aurora sat up in bed and noticed two twin girls around 14 or 15 years old dressed in maid’s attire standing in front of the bed. With short blonde hair and brown eyes, despite being only maids, the twins had beautiful features that didn’t lose out to the young ladies from noble families. But unlike those ladies, these two seemed like they could hold their own in a fight.
“My name is Tanya.” The one on the left said.
“My name is Anya.” The one on the right said.
“We’ll be taking care of you starting today.” The two maids bowed respectfully after introducing themselves.
She couldn’t tell the difference between them at all!
Aurora tried to introduce herself but found out she couldn’t say anything.
Her voice wouldn’t come out. Had she forgotten how to talk after all that time in the darkness? She opened and closed her mouth twice before giving up.
Tanya and Anya glanced at each other. Did they do something to offend the Miss? If so, their punishment would not be light, especially after the Duke told them to treat her with respect. After leaving the maids with brief instructions, the Duke left to who knows where.
Aurora felt weird from the moment she woke up. Her body didn’t feel like her own body. As she looked back into the room her eye caught a mirror hanging on the wall. She stood up from the bed, unstable. Her legs were weak and trembling.
The two maids came over to help her as she wobbled her way over to stand in front of the mirror.
She nodded her head to let them know she was fine, and that they could let go. The moment she looked in the mirror, Aurora gasped, startled at what she saw.
Reflected in the mirror was a young lady in a silk nightgown with skin as white as snow. Her eyes were green like the finest emerald gemstones, and her straight nose and petal-like lips gave her the appearance of a living doll.
