Sigel.

The Old English word for sun.

And the rune for sun.

However, unlike the rune for ‘light’, the Sigel rune was merely decoration and didn’t have any power.

It is also where the word 'sigil' originated.

According to Gaius Lancaster, the God of Light and Creation, Noam, created the light rune.

However, there is a legend, or rather, a rumor about another Supreme Deity, called Sol, the Goddess of the Sun and Rebirth.

Like Supreme God Noam, the Goddess Sol loved humans. But Sol loved humans to the point of obsession. She believed that humans were still in their evolution and that their current bodies were not their final form.

The Supreme Gods eventually sealed her away due to interfering too much with humans.

While her existence was just a myth, there are those who believed in Sol and her words. Those people gathered and called themselves Sigel.

And they were destroyed by Alphonse Rizar for experimenting on young children using forbidden runes.

Forbidden runes, like forbidden magic, are curses that use blood as the median to activate.

While curses are related to the darkness attribute, even if one did not have any affinity with darkness, they could still use it.

Then, how are humans able to use runes they have no affinity for?

Like the nightlight rune or the communication rune…

The user's sigil inscribed on each person allows them to activate basic runes even if they have no affinity towards the element the rune uses.

The three-layered sigil that connects to the four main elements lets others activate the most basic runes. It uses the rule of [nature] and [limitation]. However, the three-layered sigil, as mentioned before, can only activate mostly common one-word runes.

But the five-layered sigil can activate all basic runes, including other unique runes, as long as the user has an affinity to the element connected to it.

The rule of nature is the four cardinal directions, while the rule of limitation restricts the user's mana.

In the end, curses ignore the rules of magic.

Like the curse her mother cast over humans to be unable to use their mana core.

“How cruel…” Aurora gasped as she continued reading through the files.

Sigel's experiments centered on increasing a person’s mana. This is classified as forbidden because the amount of mana a person is born with is determined.

Mana is said to be gifted by the gods. And it can only be altered by those said gods. So, trying to increase the amount of mana your mana core can hold was like going against their wishes. And therefore, this will in return corrupt your own mana.

Sigel didn’t care about such things.

They tried to find a way to steal a person’s mana core but failed at doing so. After all, a person’s mana core was synced to their spirit bodies and does not exist in the human world.

“From the notes, it seems like they gave up and then...” Her hand trembled as she read the next part. She could not bring herself to read the rest out loud.

Those bastards took the cores of beasts in the Corrupted Region and implanted them in human children who have yet to awaken their mana core.

Since the human heart is the closest to the spirit, they cut open their hearts and put the beast’s core inside.

T-then…Lucius’ friends…

Aurora’s eyes teared up. She felt as though something was stuck in her throat, making it difficult to swallow. She covered her mouth, refusing to throw up as she read the gory details of the experiments.

Lucius…did he read this?

Aurora recalled Halon’s last words to her before leaving. “Also, keep in mind that the Duke’s Father didn’t hide anything from him about the details of his friend’s deaths.”

Can it be…he read this when he was still a child?

“What did the young Lucius think when he heard about how his friends were used and discarded?”

Not being able to do anything to save them...

Feeling as though he was the cause of their death...

That’s right. Lucius must have felt overwhelmed by his powerlessness.

‘The same feeling that haunts me still.’

Elran’s City, Carlisle Academy.

One of the top five advanced educational facilities in the Empire, the Carlisle Academy nurtured talented people from ages 13 to 18 through various fields. Only 100 students are chosen to enter the academy every year.

The departments in the academy are Rune Magic, Military Training, Magic Theory, and Ethics.

The Rune Magic Department includes classes that focus on students mastering their sigils and other runes. These students usually end up with a profession that requires the use or creation of runes, such as a Rune Mage.

The Military Department concentrates on weapon mastery and warfare training classes. A student can decide to master one or several weapons. The classes heavily focus on different combat training such as swordsmanship, archery, spears, and other martial arts, including barehand fights like close combat, practical maneuvers, and mounted combat. Of course, some classes also teach strategy, tactics, and other necessary abilities needed for battles.

Both students and professors of the Magic Theory Department are the outcasts of the academy. Due to their strange behavior by preferring to isolate themselves in their labs over socially interacting with others, they are looked down on by others. Students in the Magic Theory Department research and study various subjects such as beasts, magic, mana cores, summoning magic, crystal cores, and anything else related to magic.

The Ethics Department is where students with a low assimilation rate (lower than 60%) with their sigil attend. Due to having little to no talent in rune magic, these students contribute to their family through other means. Such as making connections with other noble families, finding work at the Captial City, or marrying for wealth. The main classes found in this department cover etiquette, business, economics, diplomacy, domestic affairs, and learning how to make weapons to become a blacksmith.

Students who enter the academy must take at least three main classes every year, with a maximum of five. Three must be from the department they have entered. If a student decides to take extra classes, they can choose from other departments.

The only exception for this rule included students in the Magic Theory Department. The Professors and students in this department usually focused on researching one subject. And because of the low number of students who entered this department, the school only prepared one class and Professor for each year. This means they only have one main class. While the students still must take three classes, the other two can be from another department.

And, of course, Aurora Isla decided to enter the Magic Theory Department.

The coachman pulled up to the academy and stopped at the entrance. Aurora looked up at the building from inside the carriage with a complicated feeling.

Since the day she entered the Holy Temple, Aurora knew then that the longer she stayed by the Duke’s side, the more she will end up revisiting the past she wanted to forget.

Aurora placed her hand over her chest as she clutched her skirt with her other hand.

'Ahhh...it feels like my heart is about to jump out my chest...'

To think she returned to this place called school once again.

If Gods really do exist, she wanted to ask them why they gave her a second chance at life, only to enter this hell again??

Somebody...anyone...take her away from heeeeeeere!!!

(╥_╥)
