Back at the academy on the archery field…
Aurora and Lillian chose a bow and arrows that matched their arm length, preparing for the competition. To make it fair, the breed and strength of the horse are the same.
Lillian quickly mounted the horse, but Aurora stood in front of hers.
“What is she doing? Does she think talking with the animal will let her win?” The students whispered and snickered at her odd behavior.
But the Professor mysteriously smiled as he enjoyed eating another candy.
Aurora didn’t approach the horse at first. Instead, she stood a few feet away and opened her palms wide. She waited.
The horse approached her slowly and lowered its nostrils to her palms. After a few seconds, the horse gave a soft and low neigh.
Aurora moved the palm of her hand over its nose and up to its head. In response to her, the horse rested its head on her shoulder.
After hugging him, Aurora grabbed the reins.
“Let’s win this.”
The horse gently blew on her face in reply.
When Professor Ingsen saw this, he raised his brows in surprise. A horse blowing air in its partner’s face is one of the most ultimate signs that it trusts and respects them. It’s a relationship that usually forms over time. To think she established such a connection in a matter of a few minutes.
‘These kids are still far from attaining such respect. Not one in this class has realized that horses aren’t just animals to be used and tamed.’
“Are you ready?” Lillian smiled sweetly, but Aurora could see the look of disdain on her face.
Aurora nodded her head indifferently.
The two guided their horse to the starting point. The oval-shaped racetrack wasn’t big, but it was enough to run half a mile in one lap.
Even when considering the breed or strength of a horse, it takes one minute to run one lap.
Then the five minutes will be up around the fifth lap.
The Professor raised the whistle to his mouth. “Remember, this is to test your archery skills. You are not allowed to use your sigil or other outside assistance. If you do so, it will be an immediate disqualification. Then…”
The Professor started counting down.
“5…4…3…2…1……Go!!"

Professor Ingsen blew the whistle, and the race started.
The two horses set off.
The students started whispering amongst themselves, betting on how long Aurora would be able to stay on top of the horse without falling.
But those whispers quickly faded into silence when everyone realized that her riding skills was something they could nitpick without looking like fools.
Aurora was the first of the two to let go of the reigns and take her bow and arrow out. Her movements were not rushed or hesitant, giving her the advantage.
It was as though she used to be a soldier who fought on top of a horse for years.
While this caught Lillian off guard, she didn’t let it get to her and performed just as well, albeit a few seconds later.
What happened next, however, received different reactions. There was mockery, shock, and indifference due to never having any expectations for Aurora in the first place.
“Pffft…what did I tell you.” Said one of the students who insulted Aurora earlier.
From the beginning, they all had similar thoughts. ‘A woman from a poor noble family from the country, there is no way she is better in horseback riding than us true nobles.'
In mounted archery, when you race alone and hit non-moving targets, points are collected by how close to the center of the target you hit. However, when it comes to Castle Subjugation, it is not the person who comes in first that has the advantage, but the one who comes behind.
Aurora quickly took the lead in the race, and with Lillian coming from behind, it didn’t take long for her to hit two targets.
Aurora was already down to eight.
“……?” Professor Ingsen bit through the last piece of the lollipop as he watched with curiosity. Despite already having only eight targets left in the first lap, it did not seem to phase her at all. Or rather, it seemed like she was picking up speed.
Lillian hit another target. At this time, the two were already on their third lap, but Aurora had yet to hit a single one.
Everyone thought she had given up.
But…
From the beginning, Aurora did not put her feet in the stirrups. Instead, she adjusted both sides to a higher position, close to the top base of the saddle.
So, Aurora had planned for this from the start. She took this time to raise her legs and place each foot in the stirrups.
When Aurora leaned forward, she changed her seating position to a standing one in a matter of seconds. And because of the adjusted saddle, her standing height gave her a clear view of the track.
