I cast Burst of Clarity. While still shaking his hand, I ran Shape Iron from his gauntlet up his arm, to his breastplate. Steel touching steel, his entire armor was connected. I melded every joint together in an instant.

I felt the adrenaline rush. Heard my heart thump in my chest, now slower than ever. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves.

Behind me, the star floated up, started spinning up. My tower shield with the sword was floating toward me, but too slow. I opened my status, dumped Essence into Action speed upgrades. Upped it from 100 to 200.

The shield jolted forward, closed the distance to me. I reached out with my left hand. I gripped the hilt, freed the sword from the shield.

Stefan’s eyes had grown wide. His fellow men looked equally alarmed. They were reaching for their weapons.

Sword pointing forward, I blinked to the one furthest back. To the only one who kept his helmet on. Appeared right in front of him. Drove the point of the sword with both hands right through his throat, just underneath his helmet. I felt the tip bump against the back of it. I turned around, took a lunging step to the next target.

Under the effect of Burst of Clarity, I had ample time to line up the strike. I watched the blade plunge deep. I sliced aside. Blood sprayed out.

Three down, three to go.

The remaining opponents hadn’t figured out why I disappeared. They hadn’t spotted me yet. They didn’t know that I was right behind them. On top of it, the spinning star and the shield heading their way occupied their full attention from the front. A perfect diversion.

They had freed their weapons, and were in the midst of lifting their helmets to the their heads. But it was much too late. My movement was efficient. My blade didn’t stop for a moment, and it didn’t waver. I didn’t waste a split second. I stepped across, stabbed another. In rapid succession I moved from one target to the next, to the next, to the last. Delivered three clean, lethal strikes.

Helmets and weapons dropped to the ground. Their bodies slumped. Essence gained message trickled in as they bled out.

Only one remained. Stefan keeled over and face-planted to the ground. He struggled to move. Summer and Arina stood in shock, mouths wide open.

Mate?” Dandee said. “Leave some for the rest of us here!”

I pointed at Stefan. “You can have that one,” I said in a joking tone.

Dandee yanked Stefan’s up by the hair and hacked his head right off with the machete. A cold chill ran down my back. I couldn’t believe it. No hesitation, no pause. Holy hell. I had seen killers before, and Dandee was a killer. It made a lot of sense given where he grew up. I was just glad that he was on our side.

There was no time to get distracted. Burst of Clarity was active for another thirty seconds. I used it to think through the situation and come up with a plan. I didn’t want to get caught at the scene of the crime. We needed to move fast. Loot the corpses, and hide them.

Don’t loot anything that could identify us,” I told them.

I’m not going to wear some dead man’s armor,” Arina protested.

That’s fine,” I said. “Check for coin, grab their backpacks, fill them up and fast.”

More light please,” I told Summer, and she returned the staff to full glow, raised it high.

There was no point in asking Stefan if they killed Ember’s group. First, because he was already dead. And second, he would have said anything to save himself. I opened the first backpack and found all the evidence I needed. I lifted up a blood-stained chainmail shirt with bits of brown fur still clinging to it.

See this?”

Arina winced, but didn’t say anything.

Do you know a quiet place?” I asked her.

Arina was still in shock at what happened. “Y-Yeah, yeah, I do.”

Then come on, hurry up,” I barked at her and she woke up from her trance. She ran over to the bodies, grabbed a backpack, and started removing their gear.

Their chainmail shirts went into the backpacks. Belts, and small weapons too. I melted the plate armor straight to the tower shield until I hit the maximum of thirty pounds. Then added the rest of the steel to the star up to the max.

Three pairs of swords and shields remained. I spent 20k Essence to increase the minion control limit from two to three. If one star was good, then two was even better. I slapped the swords and shields into a second star. In the process, I collected all the leather straps that were attached to the plate armor.

I wiped the blood with their shirts. Smaller pools could be chalked up to an injury, but a large pool of blood would raise suspicion. Might cause someone to take a closer look around.

It took us a few minutes to strip them down. All that remained was to hide the corpses. I grabbed one by ankles, dragged him to the nearest stone coffin and slid the slab lid aside. It had room for two. Perfect.

Wanna give me a hand?” I asked.

Dandee and Arina ran over to help. We dropped the corpse right on top of the previous occupant, crushing the skeleton. Then did the same for the other five, and replaced the lids back on. I noted their numbers, five were low Ambers, Stefan was an Azure.

I took one final look over the scene to check if I had missed anything. “Alright. Let’s go. Lead the way,” I told Arina.

We walked in a hurry for a five minutes and were nearing the passage back to the vast chamber.

Slow down,” I said. “Act natural. Look tired. Look bored.”

Have you done this before?” Arina asked me with a worried look on her face.

They would have done to us what they already did to Ember. It was us, or them. Trust me.”

You didn’t answer my question.”

No.” I said. “Of course not, and I am sorry it had to go that way.”
