Plaster was peeling off the arched ceiling above. Walls and columns were made of pink brick. The floors too, but the staggered pattern was broken apart with patches missing. It showed compacted dirt underneath. The sun’s dim light in the city of Hillmoor, streamed in from large windows facing the river outside. The glass was missing. Water had gotten inside, created puddles up against the wall, grown in with moss and mildew.

“I thought you said that you stayed at the warehouse? Ragas, was it?” I asked.

Arina shook her head. “No, that’s just what I say if someone asks. The less they know where I am, the better.”

“I like this place,” I said. “It’s very roomy.”

Arina smiled. “My grandma used to own this library, but ... it hadn’t done well.”

That was an understatement. It didn’t look like a library. It didn’t have any shelving, or a book in sight. Stripped bare and abandoned. A small building with plenty of space, and an open floor layout. It was in a desperate need of some tender, loving care.

“What about your parents?” I asked.

“My parents? They’re gone.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.” I considered asking what happened to them, but didn’t want to touch a potentially sensitive topic. “What’s going to happen to this place once the sun sets in a few moons?”

Arina raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”

“You don’t stay here through the night, do you?”

“Well, obviously not. My grandma had two libraries. Here at Hillmoor, and the other at Andolphis.”

“So you just hop from this to-”

She nodded. “Of course, but the portal isn’t open yet. The other library is in a better condition too.”

In the fireplace, a cooking pot hung over burned remains of firewood. Next to it stood a large table without a single chair in sight. On the other side, bales of straw were laid out to create a large bed. Dandee and Summer were fast asleep, spread out like starfish. I desperately needed to get some sleep myself, but first I had to take care of the loot.

We had dumped and sorted the contents of the backpacks and satchels on the table. Seven chainmail shirts. Ten belts with sword scabbards. Six daggers with sheaths. Dozens of leather straps of various sizes. And six coin purses with two-hundred forty silver coins in total.

Even though I technically took out the six of them all by myself, I divided the coins equally. Camaraderie meant a great deal to me. I needed people I could trust, and didn’t want any bad feeling. Besides, I had already taken all the steel that was looted.

I methodically cleaned the blood off the loot. I also checked for any unique marks on the items, or anything that would identify us. As a result, I had to dump three belts, four coin purses and two sword scabbards in the river. I also melted down two daggers with engraved initials.

We hadn’t bothered to loot their cloth garments, or boots. There wasn’t enough space in the backpacks. Besides, we were in a hurry, and I didn’t want to bring their scent with us if I could help it. I leaned my minions against the wall next to the table. Combined, they were close to ninety pounds.

“That’s a lot of steel,” Arina said.

I chuckled. “Yeah, you can say that I’m a … man of steel. Ah?”

Arina looked at me funny. “I guess?”

I sighed. Nobody got the reference – obviously.

Arina was right, the place was quiet with exception for the chirping of birds, and occasional sounds of dockworkers at the adjacent port and warehouses. I could smell the scent of the river with hints of fish and algae. This world had no microwaves, no electricity, no AC, no internet. It felt like urban camping, which I didn’t mind. It felt peaceful.

Arina had a serious look on her face. “So, apparently you can … teleport from place to place?”

I chuckled. “You don’t know what you can do until you try it? Am I right?”

Arina wasn’t amused. “And I thought Dandee was the blademaster here? But you just … took them out in seconds. What sort of a smith were you?”

I shrugged. “They were lined up just right. Made it real easy for me. What can I say?”

“Mhm, sure, sure. What other surprises you have in store for us?”

“Oi, he can also shoot knives out of thin air,” Dandee called out from the straw bed. “I saw him do it.”

I winced. I thought he was asleep. “It was just some throwing daggers.”

“Nah mate, they were magic. All shiny and white, like hundreds of them.”

“Twenty five,” I corrected him.

Arina counted off on her fingers. “Four spells?”

I caught her stealing a glanced at the number on my hand. “Something like that, yeah. What does it matter?”

She smirked. “Oh, I just thought we had agreed to be honest with each other, you know?”

“Fine. And how many spells do you have, and what do they do?”

“Okay, I already told you that I can heal, and the other-”

“What’s the name of the healing spell?” I asked.

“It’s a healing spell, okay?”

“It’s called a healing spell?” I asked, using air quotes.

She crossed her arms at the chest. “What difference does it make what it’s called?”

“Alright, yeah, sure. And the other two?”

“An ability that allows me to heal myself by dealing damage.”

“The more damage you do, the more you heal?”

“Right. And the other is a power up. Faster movement, stronger hits – that sort of a thing.”

“That’s neat. Why do you use a mace? Why not use a sword instead?”

“I grew up hunting skeletons in the crypts, and maces work best against them.”

“Fair enough. And you’re a paladin, and she’s a fire mage. So I assume she does fire magic?”

“Mhm, and she’s damn good at it too.”

I nodded. “I can tweak the size and the balance of that mace for you if you like.”

“Thanks, but I’m kind of used to how it feels now. What I could really use is some armor.”

“We got plenty of that. I’ll get everyone geared after I get some sleep.”

I had a ton of work cut out for me. I removed the armor I had, set it aside. My t-shirt and sweat pants were a mess. The sneakers smelled something awful too. A problem for future Jack.

I crashed onto the bed of straw and was out cold.
