In the time that Elyssia had spent with Hecate, it was clear that the goddess had some understanding of modern society, however it was quite lacking. This was epitomised by Hecate’s current look as she seemed to be under the impression that cone shaped party hats were still in fashion, let alone at the age for someone at the age of 17.

Sitting down, Elyssia flashed Hecate a grin as she put on the slightly different party hat that was waiting for her. Elyssia’s hat had additional sparkly streamers that sprouted from the pompom and the words ‘Birthday Girl’ written on the side.

Elyssia had realised that while Hecate was a goddess who embodied dignity and kindness, she had a playful side where she would give her all for those she was close to. Through their conversations Elyssia had understood they were quite alike in their personalities allowing them to become fast friends.

While the relationship between the two had grown, Elyssia had also changed. With the mana unsealed from her body, it had an impact on her physical appearance as well.

Within the first few months Elyssia’s body had gown becoming more mature and filled out. she now looked around 18 with the immaturity her face used to have now gone, leaving her with beautiful and stunning looks that could now be compared with the goddess sat nearby.

After a month Elyssia had noticed the changes and become quite confused, eventually asking Hecate if the quick changes were normal. At the time Hecate had explained that the mana had reacted with Elyssia’s body, speeding up her growth so that her body was in an optimal state. It was not exactly normal; however, it was a genetic trait that was apparently inherited from one of Elyssia’s ancestors that had awakened after her mana was unsealed.

After eating breakfast, Elyssia followed Hecate downstairs to the laboratory she used for crafting and testing. The walls were covered in shelves that held books, alchemy ingredients, crystals, and an assortment of other items.

Elyssia was no stranger to this laboratory, having spent a long time using the facilities in her education. Since she had spent a lot of time in the room, she could clearly see the out of place red cloth covering something long on the central table.

Walking up to the table, Hecate turned around and with a little excitement started to speak.

“Under here is your birthday present from me, I have spent months working on this with the help of Hephaestus, so I hope you like it.”

With excitement in her step Elyssia walked up to the table, carefully lifting of the read cloth cover.

Sitting on a display mount was a long, majestic metal staff that gave off magical pressure. At the base of the staff was a foot long sharp metal blade with inlayed runes, the mid-section was carefully wrapped with white leather for a good grip, while a large red crystal with energy flowing within was set at the top of the staff by 4 ornate claws.

Along the staff were detailed and intricate designs that made the staff look more like an ornamental piece rather than something someone would take to battle.

“This is a battle staff that I had Hephaestus forge for you, which I then upgraded with runes and the crystal focus.”

Hecate continued her explanation, pointing towards different points of the weapon.

“The staff is made from a metal called Celestial Gold; it is quite light for a metal but incredibly strong and a great conductor of mana. The crystal is a special type of magical crystal I made for you using your unique mana and a number of other materials. The crystal will allow you to store a limited amount of your mana and when casting will resonate with your magic and amplify the effects.”

Crossing her arms with a proud look on her face, Hecate divulged the last bit of information.

“It is also similar to your sword in that it can shrink down and become a ring, making it easier to carry around. While it is a ring it can still be used as a focus for casting making it useful even in cramped spaces. The rest of the features you can figure out.”

Hecate finished the description with a cheeky smirk knowing that it would not take long for Elyssia to discover everything the staff has to offer.

Elyssia carefully picked up the staff and examined it closely. She could feel a strange attraction to the crystal which she concluded was her mana that had been used in crafting it. She noticed she could not change the form of the staff to a ring and realised it was not yet bound to her.

Elyssia levelled the staff and used its blade to draw blood from her finger. She realised that the blade of this staff was incredibly sharp, and that after looking at the runes on the blade, if she passed her magic through them the blade would become even sharper.

After the staff was bound to her, Elyssia could feel more of a connection with it then the sword. This was likely due to the fact the staff was created with her mana, but there was something else that she could not yet discern.

Flowing her mana through the staff and into the crystal, Elyssia could feel the mana flowing directly into the crystal where it would endlessly swirl around until she willed it to do otherwise, realising this was the staff’s mana storage function.

Willing the staff to become a ring, it shrank down in her right hand, eventually wrapping itself around her right ring finger. The design of the ring was similar to the staff, the setting for the crystal was the same with the 4 claws firmly holding the gem while the rest of the ring became a simple slender gold band.

Elyssia appreciated that the rings design was simpler as it would draw less attention from unsavoury types of people who she already had the pleasure of dealing with on the streets of London.

Elyssia chuckled as she thought back to how a couple of rough looking young men had tried to mug her while she was walking to meet up with a friend, only to be left rolling on the floor clutching their manhood with soul chilling groans. Now she had a battle staff to clobber people instead of just kicking them.

Elyssia had heard stories from Hecate about Hephaestus and his skill in forging, so Elyssia was beyond overjoyed to have such an exquisite weapon crafted by the god of blacksmithing by her side.

Walking up to Hecate she brought the goddess into a tight hug to express her gratitude.

“Thank you, Hecate, I appreciate everything you have done for me in the past year”

Elyssia spoke up, thankful that Hecate couldn’t see the look of longing on Elyssia’s face as she thought back to her family and how this was her first birthday she had not been with them.

Snapping herself out of her thoughts, Elyssia pulled away, a glint forming in her eyes as her gaze met with Hecate’s.

“That look again? Honestly if I didn’t know better, I would have thought you were a battle junkie.”

Hecate spoke up with a sigh, her apparent exasperation betrayed by the twitching of her lips as she tried to supress a smile while making her way towards the training grounds.

A month later Elyssia and Hecate were in the coliseum training as they are casting spells against each other. Elyssia flicked her hand upwards as an earthen wall instantly rises in front of her to counter Hecate’s fireball

Quickly preparing for the follow up spell that Hecate will use to break through, Elyssia uses the wall as cover to prepare her next spells. She puts up an additional mana barrier in front of her while condensing ice spikes which float around her.

Creating a spear of light, Elyssia focuses on sensing the flow of mana around her, waiting for Hecate’s spell to be cast.

Feeling the surge of mana that had been condensed into a lance, Elyssia could tell that Hecate was about to launch a spear of fire towards her. This was not ideal as the spear would only burn a small hole through the wall and ruin what Elyssia had planned.

Feeling a sense of foreboding, Elyssia realises that something is wrong so quickly slides to the right as an earthen spear shoot from the ground where she had been standing. Elyssia was now exposed as she saw the fire spear she had sensed traveling towards her, alongside the 50 other fire spears that were now shooting towards her.

‘How could I not sense them!’ Elyssia shouted in her mind.

Knowing she needed to counter the spears quickly, she changed her ring back into its battle staff form while launching her prepared spells to counter some of the oncoming spears.

Summoning a wall of water in front of her to weaken the oncoming spells just in time, Elyssia nimbly dances around while swinging her staff to block the spears.

Important bits to save you from my rambling:

  • I will be aiming for 3 chapters a week, but the schedule will be quite skewed for the moment.
  • If you want a ‘how it works’ fact file for magic, let me know.

Sorry for the delay in uploading chapters, time has been a bit short for me recently. I can’t lie, this section has been quite tough to write. I don’t want to bore you all with a 10-chapter info dump of the mechanics of magic and all that, so I have been struggling on how to progress the story into the good parts while keeping the important bits. I will give info on how all the magicy stuff works later on in the story but in bitesize chunks. However, if you do want an info dump like fact file, let me know and I might throw something together for you.

But, in other good news, while I may have been a bit slow writing this bit, I was also working on some of the exciting events that will be coming later so those will have a faster release. I should be posting 2 more chapters this weekend and that will see Elyssia finally arriving in her next mess.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now, thanks for keeping up with the novel for the current readers (especially over this tiny break in posting) and Hello There to the new readers, thanks for giving this a read!
