“Can I skin of his face?”
“No."
“Then half of it? You know, it won’t kill him.”
“No.”
In the darkness, Haco could hear a disturbing discussion. Not everything could be heard as it sometimes turned into a whisper. Despite Haco’s relief, he suddenly felt someone touching his face.
With his hair raised in premonition, Haco tried to knee-strike whoever was touching him.
It was Nyau: the bodyguard with the appearance of an innocent child.
As he had already expected Haco’s response, Nyau very nimbly moved away, taking quick steps on his toes—like a cat.
“I won Daidara! He was awake, so you have to report to the general.” Nyau seemed happy with winning his little bet with Daidara, but it was diminished by the upright man in the room. Even though he was having stuffed his hands in his pockets, his back was straight as a board. Most noticeable, his eyes were watching everything Haco was doing.
So when Haco slowly moved his feet over to a little platform with a hole in it, a collected voice told him, “I would advise you against that."
Without the intention of listening to the enemy, Haco jumped in it without looking in the hole. Desperation to escape, made him make a judgmental error.
The room was a modified garderobe and the hole wanted to escape from was the latrine.
Little steam could be seen coming up from the hole which was first noticed when Haco was halfway through it. His naked feet quickly felt the burning sensation. To stop his descent, Haco threw out his elbows and locked himself in place on the edge of the latrine—only his shoulders and up could be seen while he was forced to stair in the wall.
Looking down, Haco saw a big bowl with boiling water in it. Most noticeable was the little copper podium in the center. If it was just that, Haco would have pulled his elbows in and jumped down on it to escape.
Imagine, a frying pan with two pieces of meat on it, that have been forgotten over the fire for far too long. After taking a better look, it wasn’t any ordinary meat.
It was a pair of over-roasted feet, chopped off from the angles.
**Sniff!**
Now that he’d noticed, Haco could smell burnt.
‘What a sinister torture method,’ thought Haco while lifting his feet a little.
Behind him, an annoying sentence barged into his thoughts.
“I did advice you.”
Haco couldn’t help outburst a contradicting protest, “Piss off! Then advice me the hell outta here!?”
“I cannot do that, but…” the leader of the three ordered Nyau without looking at him, "Go report to the general that he’s awake."
“Yes~” Nyau responded without complaint, despite having won a measly bet of Deidara doing it.
While Nyau walked off, the middle-aged man presented himself, “My name is Liver and I’m the leader of the Three Beasts, bodyguards of General Esdeath.”
“…” Haco chose to ignore the man. If he wasn’t wrong then, ‘That shrimp, walked away to get that woman..?’
Liver wasn’t affected by the ignorance. Instead, he calmly offered, “Why don’t you come up again? You can’t have a proper conversation with the general this way.”
“… No… I’m great where I am.” Haco declined while rationalizing it in his head, ‘Depending on what that woman wants, it’s better getting roasted below.’
It didn’t take long before Esdeath stopped through the door with Nyau following behind. Her high heels clanked on the hard floor with every step she took.
She looked at Haco like he was the most amusing thing in the world.
After sitting cross-legged on a chair, she asked, “So what’s your name?”
There was no murderous aura or anything. The situation would look very peaceful to outsiders, but Haco felt different.
This is an interrogation.
“… Haco.”
“The blue flames you used in the colosseum, what are they?” This sparked Esdeath’s inquisitiveness to an insane margin, but the answer she got wasn’t satisfactory.

“I don’t know."
The little peacefulness that could be imagined was impossible to know. Esdeath undid her crossed legs and walked over before she lifted one—and yanked a heel on Haco’s collarbone.
It made him grunt hard in pain, but his pride was too much to let him cry.
“Spill it! Or I’ll make you.” Ordered Esdeath with authority, not forgetting to rotate her foot. Little blood flowed down his collarbone, onto one of the roasted feet. In less than a second, the blood burned and turned black.
“Ugh!.. I really don’t know. It just happened—ugh!” Esdeath added more weight onto the collarbone.
“That’s the lousiest explanation I’ve ever heard. Be more specific!”
The gears in Haco’s head began working overtime, ‘How should I know? Should I tell her about the Gravekeepers? The Secret Art? No, that would be stupid! But as far as I know, the mutation while using the Secret Art for the first time should be absolute... What caused it—‘
“Ugh!” The impatient owner of the heel forced Haco to spill a little of his thoughts, “I just hated how you said ‘it’s impossible, and how that sloppy fuck that traded me like I was an insignificant seed, was looking at me with disdain. I don’t really know… I just wanted to prove you wrong.”
Esdeath removed her heel and ordered, “Follow me."
After a moment's hesitation, Haco followed behind her, while the Three Beasts followed behind him.
Soon they came to a courtyard. The first thing in view was the cooking platform with roasted feet on. Haco only gave it a moment’s notice, as the rest of the sight gave him chills.
Burly men—some had masks on, while others were bald—tortured people with glee.
A huge man wearing a mask was grabbing another's throat while punching, punching, and punching over and over.
Another had a woman strapped on a wheel with fire underneath. The wheel moved the woman slowly into the fire while she was encouraged to scream louder.
At the side, a man was strapped naked to a chair with spikes. They were all over it, even where the man was sitting.
Another was hacking limbs off with a dull hatchet on a woman while saying, “Come on! Let’s really hear you scream! This is what happens to those who defy Minister Honest!!!”
Although everything was terrifying, what gave Haco the shudder was when Esdeath stepped forward and interrupted the man.
“What are you doing…? It makes me sick watching you.”
Veins popped on the man's head. “What?” he threateningly said before taking a look at the person he would slice up next.
“EEP! He shrieked like a little girl when he saw it was Esdeath. “General Esdeath!!!.
Every torturer stopped what they were doing, and threw themselves to the ground in greeting. Their voices were shaking and breathing unsteady.
Esdeath pointed at the man who used the wheel. “You. You should lower the wheel and spin faster. That way, you’ll add more mental pressure and create nauseousness."
Then she pointed at the man holding the hatchet. “What are you even doing? Using a dull hatchet kills the victims too fast. You should sharpen it and use fire to stop the bleeding. That way you can hack more while prolonging the suffering the longest possible."
After she’d shared her guidance with the torturers, Esdeath put a hand on Haco’s shoulder and asked with a smile, “Let's try again. What are those blue flames?”
His body straightened, and his usually slight bend knees could be measured to be 180 degrees. Aghast, Haco wondered, ‘Is this really how normal humans live!? They are more barbaric than us Gravekeepers, who can be said to be part Danger Beast.’
“Teigu! A Teigu!” He didn’t know where such a great lie came from, but it should work like a charm.
But, “How did it look?”, Esdeath has not bought it yet. Inside she was fighting the urge to use more direct means, ’Should I just torture it out of him?’
Haco just picked the first thing he thought of from his home and prayed to the 1st Emperor, “A clay pot, with engravings. It was filled with liquid that drank.”
With a last long look, Esdeath suddenly asked, “How about joining my army?”
It might have been his imagination, but she smiled like everything was in her hands. Everything belonged to her—even him and his secrets.
It led Haco to think, ‘Do I even have a choice?’
“I’m in!” Agreed Haco, but not fully against it. While Esdeath was curious about the blue flames, Haco’s intrigued by the authority she was showing.
She walked and behaved like she was the owner of the palace. People responded overly polite out of fear. Would the current Emperor really just sit and let this happen? Haco wanted to know more.
Without knowing it himself, he desired the same.
