Just as Haco was ax-kicked and fell to the ground, time seemed to slow down. A million thoughts went through his head.
‘Monster!!'
‘I can’t win!'
‘I have no chance.’
Reflections of his life played through his head in an instant vision when a man with a scornful expression overlapped Iokal in the background.
“Touching my uniform, to begin with, was impossible for you, a shivering weak ant, destined to be stepped on—”
Coupled with Esdeath’s words, it provoked something deep inside Haco’s core. Set it ablaze, before—like a torrent—burst out.
In flux, the blue flames, starting from his cracked head to the deep heel mark, rapidly healed Haco’s injuries in front of anyone.
Standing ready to the far side, opposite Iokal. Stood Esdeath’s three bodyguards. They stood ready to intercept anyone who wanted to use the fight to sneak attack.
So far the fight went exactly as they thought it’d. Their expressions were unchanging.
Suddenly they were forced to be vigilant when the slave rose like a zombie while being wrapped in blue flames.
“Isn’t that the power of Yatsufusa?” Asked the bodyguard with a small build—like a child—while he pulled out a flute and got ready to blow it.
Standing in the middle, a tall man with grey hair said after having observed enough, “No it isn’t. Yatsufusa requires the user to stab the corpse for it to reanimate. This man was alive just a moment ago... and seems he still is.”
Back to Haco, he felt like he just found something he’d lost, or repaired. Rather than happy for this newfound power, he felt irritated. “I really hate those words.”
“Did your measly bride hurt being called an ant?” Esdeath was really curious. She’d watched every wound she had inflicted, being healed to perfection by the blue flames. Not a scar was left when they died down.
“Not that. I really hate being told ‘it’s impossible and whatnot. I will prove you wrong by touching that uniform and get out of here.” Iokal’s stupid face and Esdeath’s words had touched Haco’s bad nerve.
“Sounds like a desperate roar of a weakling to me. You will break soon like anyone else,” Esdeath mocked before she charged with her rapier.
The fight for Haco’s survival went on with a direct front kick.
‘He’s gotten stronger, noted Esdeath. Still, she easily blocked it with the rapier, and pushed Haco back, before following with a slash over his midriff. Little blood flowed, as she on purpose experimented.
Although Haco had his heart and resolve to fight now, it still went the same as before: Doing a fluid chain of kicks that was broken by Esdeath’s swordsmanship.
Haco was also back to being riddled with superficial wounds. But was experiencing a worse problem.
‘Why won’t they listen anymore? They just were so docile.’
As the fight went on, Haco felt his Secret Art refusing him. The single thing he could rely on to get out of here.
While struggling, Esdeath went harder on Haco and thrust the rapier through Haco’s thigh, grazing the bone on purpose.
Left screaming in agony, Haco instinctively held onto the blade with his hands, when Esdeath shook the handle.
“Is it possible you cannot use those blue flames anymore?” Not that she’d expected an answer as the result spoke for itself. But it left her quite disappointed. Just to make sure, she ignored the hands on the sword and yanked it out, before flat-out forcing it through Haco’s abdomen—through the liver.
To begin with, this wasn’t a fight. Everyone knew; this was nothing short of a game for the executioner.
In between Haco’s outcry, the spectators began conversing with each other.

“This is the first time I have seen a general in action. How strong.”
“Of course she is! This is nothing.“
“This outcome is as expected of the general who jumped through the military ranks faster than anyone, and caught the Emperor’s eyes.”
“Don’t forget, she also gathered the Three Beasts guarding her. They are terrible…"
In the midst of it, Haco’d a little revelation, ’In order to win something, you have to lose another.'
Watching Esdeath having pulled out the sword once more before aiming to penetrate his lung at a snail’s pace, being afraid was an understatement.
The words he used to say, surfaced in his heart. Ignoring everything important. Fear, dreams, regrets, wounds, Haco screamed, “Things are deemed impossible until it’s done!” And charged forward while holding a hand out.
He was going to touch the uniform no matter what. This time Haco’d resolved to do things differently.
When the rapier sliced through the air, instead of trying to dodge and get out of harm's way like he previously had, Haco moved in it.
Having no support, no Secret Art, no nothing. Only resolve.
**Splash!**
Esdeath’s rapier went through Haco’s heart like a knife in butter. Blood gushed out of his mouth and the taste of iron tried to overwhelm his mood.
While being skewered slowed him down radically, Haco managed to graze the jacket’s collar. Just beside the black tattoo on her porcelain-white skin, on top of her chest that was revealed by her half-open uniform.
It was only the fingertip of his index finger, but it was enough to prove the impossible.
Seeing Haco’s beaten dog smile, brought Esdeath great displeasure. Although the slave before her was done and unable to speak, she could imagine the mockery.
He’d paid with his life to prove what she’d said was impossible.
Still, Esdeath respected a warrior’s mentality—that Haco managed to display at the end—so she opted to silently take the loss and kick him off the sword.
The sun shined brightly on this day. It was a terrible heatwave that made people curse. The lonely sun had no friends today.
So, it seemingly made one. A ray of sunshine fell on Haco’s dead body. To encourage. To remind, ‘I’m your friend.’
Almost in like in response, blue flames erupted, filling the sword wound in his heart. And like a wave, burst out and healed the rest of the wounds. The flames rose and lit the colosseum in blue before it quieted down and completely disappeared.
Esdeath, Three Beasts, and everyone else stood by, eagerly waiting for something else to happen. Like the fight continuing.
Alas, Haco felt his body completely out of energy. All he could muster was turning over on his stomach.
Looked pitiful.
And Esdeath thought it would be a pity, so she ordered, “We are leaving. Daidara, take him with."
The bulkiest of the Three Beasts stepped forward, and lifted Haco in one hand, before following Esdeath out of the colosseum with the rest.
They gallantly walked through the busy streets of the Capital, to the palace. Out of his half-closed eyes, Haco perceived how people fled with apparent fear on their faces. Some of them even looked to be very strong.
‘That must be what absolute strength can do. If I just had that…’ thought Haco before his eyelids fell.
