My First Trip to the Tall Tree
Does a tree stand solitarily,
abiding ‘till time withers its weary leaves?
Or does it stand, like a man
Is supposed to, stoic, broad-shouldered, and a bit sadly?
Does the tree wonder what it’s like–
To live in a world where might, might not make right?
Why, when I look to you, oh tall and beautiful tree
With leaves that welcome like
Cherry blossoms welcome the Springtime, inviting me–
Inviting the world into your shelter, your branches,
Why does the inside of your trunk ring so hollow?
What pain poisons such kind souls in this world?
For what reasons do we follow
Such sick scripts that leave us begging to borrow
A little bit of kindness, and why oh why,
Does that leave you with crumpled leaves in the fall,
Me with debts of doubt, desire, and despair?

I wish I had more answers than questions
Maybe then, when I’m older, instead of these debts I’d have pension
But we all take things to grow, don’t we? At least, I suppose.
You, with your roots that have taken the nutrients from the little plants around you
Yes–I see the withered weeds and wisteria–I don’t judge, don’t worry
For I have taken to grow too, you know.
I’ve burned so many bridges that your mighty height
Would look like ants next to the burnt riches.
I’m tired of all this taking, aren’t you?
I wish we could grow together, maybe then we could be making
A lovely canvas, paint something beautiful, like the canals in Venice.
You know tree, you’re a good listener. Has anyone told you that?
I think I’ll come back next week,
Bring some water for the both of us
And maybe a little something to eat.
