A Poem for Year’s First Snow
Often when I see you again
I’m reminded of when you came to me–
That night when I was so entrenched in muddy waters
When sleep eluded my embrace and so too did my sanity.
It was you, with your cold blanket of white,
In a moment that could only be described as a granted respite.
Who might’ve granted me that kindness
So that my soul could be warmed enough
To last until I was finally cured of my blindness
To hold on a second longer–
Some kind of higher power?
My belief in God or Destiny
Is as ephemeral as the first snow.
For a moment, you fall from the sky like a feather,
Yet you melt as soon as you touch the ground.

I wonder if perhaps the weather just isn’t right–
If I’m not right
Or perhaps, I only need
Belief when I need you.
You, the first snow, you the winter wind’s blow
You, who showed me life again.
You showed me how warm a flicker of hope can be
And gave me a reason to grow
And now I know–seeing you again
From outside a different window–
That this life I chose
From my birth in January
To that night in December
And now, in this moment,
Was born within your glow.
