Forbidden Son – The Red Herald

Review: 8.2/10 from 9 ratings

In the 14th century, when humanity was still confined to the Old World, a plague of blood and death swept across the land. Millions died in its wake and left the survivors in a desperate struggle to survive the corrupted and corpse-ridden hellscape. But, with the aid of time, humanity sprang back and the dawn of a new era came with them. Through blood, sword, and sorcery, humanity drove back the Heralds of corruption and blood. Felling their red abominations and monstrosities until only one final enemy remained. And soon enough, he was delivered unto death for his crime of orchestrating it all.

It is now the year 2020. 500 years have passed since humanity survived the Red Wave, and now even that horrendous event has faded away into nothing more than an event written in history books. In that time, people have spread to all corners of the world. Even landing upon a new continent they dubbed the New World. And so, humanity slowly transitioned into a new golden era where technology and magic coexist. With this new blend of ingenuity and ways of old, humans blossomed in a way few other creatures could in the world. Able to use the technology they created to keep monsters within their borders and dragons within their dens.

This story follows Volan Rel Roltand. A 16-year-old student attending the Royal Zekanto Academy and son of the royal Sword-Captain Gael Roltand. While born in a position of privilege, he’s not gone without his struggles. His peers born nobles of the Old Houses look down on him as a commoner born far too close to the crown, and many of his instructors hold him to the expectations that he’ll be just like his father. However, strange things are starting to happen; both to Volan and the kingdom of Zekanto. Monstrous abominations of flesh, bone, and sinew are beginning to appear in the shadows while a mysterious person claiming to be a “Herald of the Garden” has appeared. All the while, Volan is hearing mysterious whispers in his head and finding himself able to use a mysterious power that, while empowering him, devours the body, mind, and soul of those it consumes. Something is going on, and no one but the Herald seems know what’s happening.
