Chapter 2: Day 0

My name is Martin Heisenberg, a 16-year-old human. I'm now a full-fledged knight of the proud Weiss Kingdom, and now one of the Purgers.

What exactly is a Purger, you might ask.

Knights are those who protect the kingdom from harm. It is divided into 2 categories: Guardians and Purgers.

Guardians are those who protect the kingdom from internal threats such as criminals. They maintain order inside the kingdom's protective barrier. Boring job. Really boring.

Meanwhile, Purgers are those who protect the kingdom against external Anomalies.

Anomalies are evil creatures that prey on mortal-kind, our greatest archenemy. I say mortal-king because there are other races of mortals besides humans, but that's for another time. The thing is, there are so anomalies in this world, all in various shape, sizes, and abilities that we humans have to live inside these barriers just to be able to breathe. We are safe behind the barrier, but not for long. If we don't properly cull the anomalies every now and then, not even the barrier can save us.

So, it is the job of Purgers to kill these Anomalies. We are nothing short of heroes!

I'm sooo proud of this job!

Sigh. I'm gonna be honest with you, I want to be a Guardian. People dubbed me as a genius because I was the youngest person to ever be accepted into the academy, and even thought I'll be a guardian. That, however, isn't the reason. The reason why I want to be a guardian is- Who doesn't? There's rarely a crime in this kingdom, at least I rarely heard of one. It's a way to get paid while being laid back!

But... my wife is pregnant with our third child, our second child is beginning to walk, and our eldest needs to go to school. You see what I'm trying to say, right?

Naturally, there are more Guardians than there are Purgers. Not only is the job really dangerous, there isn't really a person that lasts 1 year in this profession. However, it is highly in demand, and so the pay is high, about ten times the salary of guardians.

I need to be a Purger to sustain my family.

There was a bootcamp for Purgers where I was quickly thrown after application. It's recently implemented by the new king, King Henry Weiss, to hopefully decrease the number of casualties of the Purgers. I was one of the "lucky" few who passed.

While we're at it, let me show you the gear of a Purger.

Masks - To enter the dangerous forest, one must wear a mask. From infectious spores to hallucinogenic gases, masks are the most important equipment a purger must have when venturing out into the world. The masks can vary in appearance as long as the basic mechanics are maintained. That reminds me, we were instructed to decorate our own masks according to our wish. I guess this is our form of identification. These masks are connected to tanks that contain isolated air.
