Sunlight filtered through the window of my hospital room. My entire body felt heavy as I laid in bed. I could barely move my head to see the crying faces of my mother and my father. I knew why they were crying. Death had finally caught up to me. I had been a cancer patient in that hospital for too long anyways. It was only a matter of time before the sweet kiss of the grim reaper would find me.
I had been a vegetable since I entered middle school. It had been 6 agonizing years of pain and torture from the disease that afflicted my body. It was a disease that was previously undiscovered, and I was influenced by a disease so rare that only I had it. My last wish was to play a VRMMO developed specifically for death fated hospital patients initially, but turned into a full fledged MMO. My parents wouldn’t stop crying as they were pulled out of the room.
It might seem cruel to pick a VRMMO over spending time with my parents for my last days, but I had seen enough of them crying. It wasn’t good for me or them. All I ever was to them was a burden anyways. It would be better if they just forgot about me. I felt the warm tears run down my cheek as the headset was placed atop my head.

The headset loaded up the main menu, and then the screen went from black to white. New options were displayed in front of me.

It would have been a waste of my precious fleeting life if I didn’t immediately go to the games library, so I focused on that option. This caused the screen to move to the next slide which displayed the only game that was installed. The game that I could make my dreams come true. I immediately clicked on [Forsworn Fantasy]. Then the scene changed to a sprawling landscape with beautiful greenery spread out, and off in the distance there were mountains reaching into the vast sky.
I had wanted to burn this scene into my retinas as I stood there above the vast world, but I would have time to admire it once I actually started playing the game. Instead I focused on the menu option to create a character. When the screen changed I saw a bearded man standing still in front of a pitch black background. “So this is character customization?”
I looked at the top which displayed the species of the character. This one was a human. “Aggh, boring!” I immediately flipped to the next selection which was a handsome male elf with flowing green hair. “Nope too much like a human.” I continued to flip through the species. There were at least 30 different playable species. I found myself amazed, but my life was fleeting so I had to choose one quickly. When I finally found the race I wanted to play, I felt a sudden pain in my heart. It felt like someone was repeatedly stabbing me with needles. I could tell something was happening to my real life body, but before I knew it my vision went black.

Forsworn Fantasy was a game crafted from the ground up with love. One could tell by just the title screen how much love was poured into this passion project. The people over at Masdel Studios did a fantastic job putting all of the pieces together to release the perfect VRMMO game. It was a game that was like no other, and the sheer power the servers needed to run the game was extraordinary. Luckily Masdel was a billion dollar corporation. The Ceo of Masdel originally made the game as a single player game for people who were bedridden, but it became such a huge deal that people started demanding that they release it to everyone. After being pressured to do so the company finally relented.
The game was titled Forsworn because it was for the people who were giving up their lives to play. In the game there were 34 playable species not including the different races that were found within the subsections. The game offered a wide array of play styles. There were a ton of different class combinations one could try as well. It was said that there were over 100 trillion different combinations. Most people didn’t believe that though.
The game also sported the best graphics of the 22nd century. The beautiful scenery within the game even brought some VR artists to the game just so they could paint the landscapes. Writers would come to talk to the NPC’s in the game, and the blogs that were found on the forums became wild. There was something about the game that no one in the world could have expected though. What the people never expected was that the game world was actually based on something real.
Lucy the previously bed ridden vegetable passed on in the real world, but her soul immediately found its home in a new world. There were no goddesses to greet her, and there was no tutorial. She was just dumped into the wilderness like an animal. In fact, she might as well have been.
She was currently lying on the forest floor. Her body, which was no larger than 5’ 2”, had fur in very specific places. Her ears were pointed at the tips, and she had a long slender tail coming out of the back of her black robes. The color of her hair and the fur on her ears and tail was the same color as her robes with white splotches. She had become a catkin, just like she wanted. She was resting peacefully on the grass. The faint rising and falling of her chest which was modest in size made it obvious she was alive. A butterfly landed on her nose as she rested, and slowly she was roused from her sleep to take in the new world.
