When I awoke I was lying on grass in a forest. The pain that I had felt earlier was gone, and strangely I was feeling newly invigorated. “Huh, wasn’t I supposed to start off in a town?” That was the first thing that came out of my mouth upon looking around. Strangely, the voice that came out of my mouth was different from my old one. I didn’t even remember changing the voice setting of my character. “Actually, did I even finish character creation?”

I stood up and did the first thing I thought of. I tried to pull up the menu, but after saying “menu” repeatedly it didn’t come up at all. I was filled with trepidation at not being able to open the menu. I did the next thing that came to mind. Instead, I tried to say “Status”, and this actually did something.

I looked over everything. I didn’t remember finishing character creation, and it looked like I didn’t even change my name before starting. It appeared I didn’t have any skills yet, but that was to be expected in this game. I inspected each and every thing in my status. [Active skill gained: Inspection LvL: 1]

The inspection only revealed a little bit about everything. [HP: The amount of health points you have. If you lose them you die.] All of the attributes were pretty self explanatory, so I moved onto the racial skills. When I was creating my character I didn’t get a proper look at those.

[Keen Senses: As a member of the catkin family, all of your senses are heightened.] I could already tell that this one was working as I took in the scents and sounds of the forest. I could hear tiny creatures scuttling about from quite a distance away. [Agile: As a member of the catkin family, your agility gains will be higher per level.]

The way stat allocation worked in the game is that you would get a stat boost every level automatically to the basic stats, but you would also get allocation points. The allocation points would allow you to spec your character however you wanted, but some races would be better than others at certain tasks. This was mainly true for the earlier levels. Lastly, I inspected my last racial skill. [Wisdom of Ferash: The Ferash are known for their wisdom of the forest. Gain increased wisdom per level.]

Once I was finished parsing through the information displayed on my status, I was ready to go. I was getting quite excited, but then I realized I didn’t have any weapons. All I had were these black robes. I looked on the ground for any semblance of a weapon, but there was nothing. I looked around everywhere, but the closest I came to a weapon were the natural logs of the forest.

I groaned as I started walking aimlessly through the forest. “My first goal should be civilization. Then I will conquer the game world by doing my best!” I really liked the idea as I pumped my fist in the air to motivate myself. I continued walking until I reached a small stream jutting through the forest. I hid myself in some bushes as I observed. [Active skill gained: Sneak LvL: 1]

What I saw on the other side of the stream was a mouse with long back legs, presumably used for jumping. The mouse was about the size of a New York City rat. As I observed I noticed that my stomach was starting to growl. The mouse must have heard my growling stomach as it immediately darted away. I had thought so, until I heard a snapping sound behind me. Before I could whip around I felt a sharp pain in my side. “Pain!? Aggh!” I didn’t remember turning the setting for pain on, but this whole situation was weird when I thought about it. I was lucky these robes were sturdier than they looked. I turned and glared at my attacker to see a boar about the size of a large dog. Its tusks had fresh blood on them from where they barely pierced into my stomach.

It didn’t give me time to think as it started charging at me again. I swiftly rolled out of the way before it charged at me again. This time it tried to anticipate my roll as it charged, but luckily for me it just barely missed me. [Active skill gained: Dodge LvL: 1]

When the boar charged at me again this time I activated my skill. I was amazed at how my mind knew what to do as I leapt over the boar. The boar slammed into a tree behind me getting stuck in the process. Rapidly, I tried to think of a way to finish the boar off. Magic! I knew the answer had to be magic! [Passive skill gained: Clear Mind LvL: 1]

I did the first thing that came to mind, and started to channel my mana. Surprisingly, the act came easily, and I was able to have a clear mind while channeling. I formed the mana into Ice shards the size of my arm. [Active skill gained: Mana Manipulation LvL: 1]Once I was done the ice shard ripped through the air and impaled the boar spraying blood on the tree. I then inspected the boar as it slumped over. [Common Boar: Corpse]

I heaved a sigh of relief as I fell on my butt. My stomach growled at me in frustration at its emptiness. I tried to log out of the server again, but no menu would come up. The only display I had was my status. There was also the fact that the corpse of the boar didn’t disappear into a drop. There was a possibility in my deranged head that this wasn’t the game world, but I shook it off. “That would be stupid.” In reality I must have been in denial. When I cooked the boar using magic and ate it, my stomach was filled. That could only mean that my stomach and the food were real. There was no way this was still virtual reality, but even still I wanted to deny the possibility. “Maybe I should treat this as real and not die. Yes, dying would be bad!” I stored the uneaten parts of the boar in my inventory. Then as night descended I slept against a tree.
