Wandering aimlessly, had turned out to be a dumb idea… go figure. For over an hour I had simply walked in a straight line, but I couldn’t seem to get anywhere. Passing by a tree just like the many I had passed before, I suddenly paused.

I frowned as I looked at it. It truly was just like the trees I had been passing, but what if it was because… I wasn’t passing trees plural, but had simply been passing that same tree over and over again?

In a single swift movement, I pulled the spear off my back and swung it straight up, Impaling the unfortunate beast that had decided to make me its next meal. The air around me seemed to swirl around, like mist being blown away, as a notification came up from the system.

[You have killed a Broken Symphonic! You will be rewarded 15 Exp, and 15 bonus Exp for defeating it at level zero!] Ding! A second notification popped up as soon as the last had faded saying, [congratulations on becoming level 1!]

swiping away the notifications, I focused on my surroundings. The Broken Symphonic as it was called, was apparently an avian race who’s high-pitched call could disorient its victims. I had been walking in circles around a single tree, for mere minutes, yet my mind had been completely fooled.

The moment it realized I was figuring it out however, it swooped in hoping for an easy kill instead. “Tch, damn bird didn’t even leave me some meat for a decent meal.” I scowled at the spot where its corps had disappeared.

The item drops from it didn’t include anything I could currently use. A few feathers, and a [broken soundbox]. evidently it was the organ it was using to generate that disorienting sound.

Shaking my head, I resumed walking. My stomach let me know quite loudly that I couldn’t keep going for much longer however, and Just as my legs were beginning to feel a bit weak, my nose picked up a wonderful scent.

Sniff sniff… “meat!”

My bladefox senses were picking up the sweet scent of roasting meat! Strength filled my legs once more, as I sprinted straight towards the savory smell.  Leaping over fallen logs, and ducking under low hanging branches, I could tell that I was getting close.

Suddenly My ears picked up the sound of a low grunting, and heavy footfalls. Sliding to a halt, I knelt slowly before pushing aside some brush to peek at the source of the noise. Whatever it was, was between me and my meat, so I would be granting it no mercy.

The sight, however, was quite the odd one. Ugly beasts standing at around 7 feet tall, and swinging their massive belly fat around as they walked. Their skin was a dappled gray, and their faces were somewhat smushed, with a crooked pig's snout as the only decoration.

 “...Gross.”

the system registered these things as Orcs. and the description left something to be desired regarding their nature as… [Slave traders, and sexual hunters, Orcs are well known for their insatiable carnal desire. They are also one of the only races capable of keeping up with succubi!]

… I was beginning to think that the systems descriptions were written by Chaos herself, as they were equally as unhelpful and off-putting as she was.

Slowly and quietly pulling the spear off my back, I switched my hold to a three finger hold, similar to how one might hold a pencil. Raising my leg and pulling my arm back, like a baseball player winding up his pitch, I stomped down, and twisted my body, sending the force from the stomp into my throw.

My ears instantly popped from the wind pressure, as the spear flew true, decimating the orcs, and crashing through multiple trees before embedding itself in a stone outcropping.

Instead of immediately retrieving my weapon, I quickly grabbed the meat from the skewer that had kept the meat suspended over the Orcs campfire, and bit deep.

Hmmm, slightly undercooked, and the type of meat was ambiguous. With how hungry I was however, I doubt I would have had any problem eating dirt.

I gave a contented sigh as I rubbed my now full stomach.

…that actually felt quite good. Do foxes like belly rubs?

Placing that thought aside, I walked over to the stone outcropping my spear had been embedded in, and gave the handle a yank. I had expected the spear to require a bit of force to pull out, to my surprise however, the spear pulled out easily.

Quite a bit of the wall came out with it too, and behind that wall… was a small room. Stepping inside, I waved away the scent of stale air. Room was far too kind of a term however, as it was merely a cave.

A cave filled with 10 to 15 women in various states of…

 “how disgusting”.

Some of them had clearly been used quite recently, and the empty soulless looks in their eyes told me that they were beyond my help at the moment. Sighing in defeat as much as simple tiredness, I turned to leave.

In this state, there was nothing I could do for them. And I had no desire to help those who had already given up entirely.

Suddenly, I was stopped by a tug on my robe. Turning around, My eyes widened at the sight of the small girl looking up at me. “Are you… leaving?”

behind her stood a few of the more able-bodied women, who had picked up those who could no longer walk. At first glance, it had seemed as if they had already given up and were ready to die, but it seemed that I had underestimated them.

At the same time, I felt the taste of bile rise in my throat with the realization that even a girl this young hadn’t escaped the Orcs grasp. Contrary to first appearances, they were still fighting even now however.

There was no way in hell I was going to leave them here when they were still trying so desperately despite barely being able to walk. Patting her on the head, I smiled a bit and  raised my voice to the surrounding women.

“I can see you’ve been through a lot. I won’t pry, and I won’t ask you to tell me what happened.” “All I ask is that those who can, help get everyone out of this wretched place.”

The girl looked to one of the nearby women, one of the ones in a near-comatose state and said, “it's alright momma, we can leave now!”

…silence.

“Momma?”

I felt something crack inside me at the sight of a small girl trying desperately to get a response from her mother, while her mother could no longer even see her daughter's face. Closing my eyes to the sight, I bit my tongue.

Drawing blood, the pain momentarily grounded me. This world wasn’t kind. It had taken me less than a single day to spot that. It was a ruthless one, where death was only the luckiest option you could get.

As the women began slowly making their way out of the cave, the one supporting the little girl's mother, limped up to me. “She tried really hard, you know? We all made sure that the Orcs wouldn’t lay a hand on little Maia…”

 she caressed the girls head.

“Scarlet always volunteered to take her place instead-”

the woman choked up a little, before wiping away a tear and continuing.

“We’re going to head to Auralite village. It was Scarlet's hometown, and there's a chance she might open up again if she’s in a place she feels comfortable in.”

“you’re more than welcome to come along? No telling what else we’ll encounter out here, and having a capable warrior like you here would be reassuring.”

she paused for a moment.

“You are the one who slew the Orcs right?”

She tilted her head in question.

“Yes, that was my doing.” I replied, Picking up Maia and placing her on my shoulder.

“Did the guild send you?” she asked as we made our way towards the exit. Guild huh… it really is about as RPG as it gets.

“No, I was just wandering through, when I saw the Orcs, and killed them.” I decided that with the current atmosphere, I was better off not letting them know that I had only attacked the Orcs, because I was hungry.

We walked with the group for a ways before the women began to split up, some heading towards different locations. Pausing to think for a moment, I decided it would be best to follow Maia and her mother.

This world was a brutal one, and if I ever hoped to survive, let alone grow in it, I’d need a plan of action.

Nom  “...ouch”

Speaking of Maia, she had fallen asleep, and had begun nibbling on my ears in her slumber. Cute, though that really does hurt.

Readjusting Maias weight, I once again stuck off. This time with a deeper understanding of the world I was dealing with.
