Chapter 6: town hall (5)

…

          When we got to the city which has about a 2-and-a-half-hour drive by carriage I noticed soap bubbles floating in the air. There were people running in the streets and they were wearing masks ad costumes. Most of them were children but some of them were adults. there were a couple of people in stilts and they had tubs of soapy water by their legs and they were dipping metal rings on poles in them and pulling out the rings. They then blew on them and bubbles flew out.

          People regularly went into the stores on the street and came out with animal themed candies and the like. But our carriage kept on going. People waved to us and father leaned out of the window and waved back. The people in the street got out of the way and waved.

          At the end of the street a large building loomed. It looked old and made of brick. It seemed to be the town hall. Yes, this wasn’t a large capital city. It was a town. The county, after all, was still only a county. There were no large cities in this place.

          Mother grabbed me and everyone piled out. My parents started talking as we walked to the town hall and my brother looked at me then motioned to mother that he wanted to hold me.

          “Oh ok, but you have to keep a hold of her,” my mother said.

          “Alright mother,” he said.

          We all walked into the city hall and found that their were people in costumes and they were talking over a map of town. Said map had different locations marked out with paper cutouts. Some seemed to be candy stalls other meat stalls. Some were toy shops.

          “mother, may I visit Amelia?” my brother asked.

          “ok, but you can’t take your little sister with you,” mother responded.

          Brother looked put off but simply nodded. He then sent a message to my head.

          “I’ll be back with Amelia,” he said.
