The light gleamed off of the Guild Master’s bald head as he strode out onto the sand holding a tiny bell in the palm of his hand.
“Let's get to it then,” he said and his voice boomed out into the stadium as if by some invisible loudspeaker.
“The rules are simple,” he continued. “The first squad to disable at least two members of the opposing team wins. The winning team will be accepted into the Guild.”
“Yes sir,” we chorused.
“We don't want to see limbs torn off,” said the Master. “We’ll save that for the real battles.”
We gathered together and touched all of our weapons together and the Master held the bell over the gathered weapons and rang it a single time. The weapons shimmered as thin pillows of air wrapped around the sharp points and cutting edges.
We faced each other for a second before the Master shouted, “Fight!” And the arena burst into a flurry of motion.
Sylvia launched a dagger directly at me and then her spell card activated and she vanished into thin air.
I ducked to avoid the thrown dagger and as I did so I saw her in the corner of my eye appearing behind me. I twisted around and felt her blade cutting into my skin and sliding along my ribs.
I swung my sword at her but she jumped back and blocked my attack with her dagger. The force flung her backwards and she landed a few feet away and grinned at me.
Sylvia twirled the bloodied dagger in her hand and said, “It looks like you are compensating for something with that long sword?”
In the corner of my eye I saw the rest of my team locked in battle but there was nothing I could do at the moment. Sylvia was too dangerous to be left alone. I needed to disable her before I joined the rest of the team.
“I'm going to pound you so hard you won't be able to walk for a week,” I said hoping my words would throw her off balance.
The corner of her pixie face curled into a smile.
I leapt forward and swung my sword in a low horizontal attack.
Sylvia lowered her dagger and parried then she immediately counter-attacked in a flurry of blows that pushed me backwards towards the edge of the arena.
Damn she’s fast.
Low moans came from the onlookers but I ignored them and tried to focus on the duel.
It was clear that she had been trained from a young age. Everything about her screamed pride, dignity and all that shit. Which meant she wouldn’t expect someone to fight dirty.
I dipped my sword tip into the dirt and flung sand at her face.
She raised her hand to shield her eyes and my sword covered in its pillow of air punched her straight in the gut. The pillow of air stopped the weapon from killing her but it would have felt like a horse kicked her in the stomach.
As Sylvia hit the ground I heard Pyson let out a booming shout.
I saw him smash Quinby out of the way and then he flicked a silver coin straight at me.
The light caught the silver coin distracting me from the card in his hand. The spell took effect and the coin grew to the size of a horse and it whooped as it spun through the air.
Imogen shouted in warning and I saw Ambrose following the giant coin straight towards me.
The coin hit the ground and bounced and Ambrose leapt onto the back of the rotating coin. The coin's momentum flung him forwards.
As he flew through the air he cast a spell and armor ripples across his body covering him from head to foot. A second spellcard activated and his sword elongated and turned into a hydra. He swung his sword and nine snakes lashed out at me.
I dived as the snakes struck the ground where I’d just been standing. I got to my feet and raised my sword.
“Blink, Titanic Growth,” I said. “Mage Armor, Hydra Strike.”
“So you know your cards,” said Ambrose. “Big deal.”
“You’ve revealed half of your hand,” I said. “And I'm still standing.”
His mage armor was going to be a big problem though. There was no attack that we had that could pierce through it.
Ambrose lunged at me and his sword stretched like an expanding elastic band. The snakes hissed as they drew nearer.
“Quinby now,” I shouted.
An explosion of light filled the sky around me. I’d expected it and closed my eyes just in time. Quinby’s Mage’s Light faded but not before two Shadow Wolves shot out of my shadows.
The snakes pulled back from the light and I stumbled back and shouted, “Gossamer shock.”
Imogen cast the first spell and threads of silk streamed out of her spell card and ensnared Pyson. Before he could cut through the silk, Imogen cast Charged Bolt on the web and Pyson screamed in pain as the net sent a jolt of electricity through his body. He struggled to remain standing and Imogen sent another jolt through the web. Pyson trembled and let out a shout of pain before collapsing onto the sand.

That just left Ambrose. He sent the snake heads flying at me again but instead of avoiding them I directed one wolf to jump in front of me as cannon fodder.
The snake’s fangs sunk into the wolf as I leapt into the air just as the second Shadow Wolf appeared beneath me. It jumped up to meet me and I landed on its back and soared above Ambrose’s head.
His armor might be impregnable but there is one weakness that all mage armor has.
Ambrose stabbed upwards and nine snake heads buried their fangs in the second wolf’s body.
I drew the Attract and Feet On The Ground spell cards and fused them. Blue and green light swirled around me like a vortex and the gravity of all objects in the area grew tenfold.
Ambrose’s legs buckled and he fell onto his hands and knees. I aimed my sword down and dropped like an anvil on top of him. The tip of my sword covered in it's pillow of magic punched him in the back of his neck with bone crunching impact.
The match was over and we had won. A team of healers arrived and Ambrose and Pyson were carried off of the field on stretchers.
From the crowd I heard Ahri shouting obscenities at Ambrose as he was carried past them.
“A friend of yours?” asked Sylvia as she stopped beside me.
“You could say that,” I said.
She smiled and I wondered what she wanted from me.
“Nice moves,” I said and I pointed at a long cut along my ribs. “Think this will leave a scar to remember you by.”
She pushed the golden hair out of her face and said, “By the way. It was nice getting pounded by you.” A shy smile crossed her lips. “Let's do this again sometime.”
She turned around and I watched her perfect ass as she stepped across the sand and left the arena. A second later I was tackle-hugged to the ground by an excited Quinby and Imogen.
The three of us laid in the sand and laughed. My shirt was shredded from Sylvia’s attacks and Quinby bled from small cuts across his chest and arms. Imogen sported a black eye and a thin cut along her cheek. But we’d done it. We’d passed.
“I can't believe we won,” said Imogen.
“Speak for yourself,” I said. “I didn't doubt our team for a second.”
She rolled onto her side and said, “Are you really a farmer?”
“Kinda,” I said. “I haven’t technically farmed yet but I have a farm if that counts. You guys should visit sometime. I make a mean pot of chili.”
A shadow fell over us and I squinted up at the Guild Master and Evelyn standing over us.
“You owe me a silver,” the Master said to Evelyn.
She groaned and fished a coin out of her purse.
“What was that about?” I asked.
“I bet that you wouldn't die,” said the Master.
Evelyn shrugged and said, “You can't blame me. You still had pig shit between your toes when you applied for the exam.”
Evelyn opened a box and drew out three copper badges. She handed us each one and said, “Put them on. You three are officially Copper Rank Cardmages.”
“What does that mean?” I asked.
“It means,” said the Master. “That half of the kingdom will now be afraid of you and the other half will hate you.”
The Master patted me on the back and said, “Evelyn take them to the medical ward to get their wounds seen to.”
I waved at Ahri who was crossing the sand towards us and as I turned to join her the Master grabbed my cloak and pulled me back.
“Wait,” he said.
As soon as he said the word a burst of color washed over my brain and images of my life flickered before my eyes. I saw myself riding a bicycle- my mother kissing me goodnight- Ahri on the train- blood in my hands. Hood lowering a worm into my eye and finally Pale snapping Ahri’s neck.
I forced open my eyes and looked up at the Master.
“What are you doing to me?” I asked through gritted teeth.
I tried to pull back but the Guild Master held onto me with an iron grip.
My hand fumbled towards my spellbag and through the jumbled visions I felt my fingers curl around a single spell card.
