Chapter 21: A quest for a smile

Seth chuckled and quickly stuck a finger inside, causing a pained moan to escape her lips. Turning around and pushing her down on the bed, he continued moving his finger inside her as he said: “I can help, but what are you willing to give me in return?”

Seth nodded back toward them and asked them for a report on how it was going. Happy with their progress, he told them he wrote a few more books before holding a lecture about what they should expect once they ascended. He told them about shells, breakthroughs, and so on.

Once done with his lecture, he started answering questions from each girl. A few minutes after noon, there was a small knock on the door.

Seeing that it was Hollie, he told the girl to continue studying on their own before walking out.

“How did it go with the headmistress?” asked Seth as they were heading towards the academy’s exit.

“She yelled at me for leaving the academy and so on. She also asked what we were doing, and I told her we were dating. After yelling at me a bit more, she let me go.” Said Hollie matter-of-factly.

“Haha. Guess that works.” Said Seth with a chuckle.

“Iris will quickly change the subject when it comes to relationships, so people usually use this to escape her pestering. Where are we going?”

“I was thinking we should eat something first. I don’t remember the last time I ate any food.” Once someone forms a source, they could use the energy from inside instead of food.

Hollie nodded, and they went to a small restaurant in the middle ring. After ordering some food and wine, Seth asked: “Anything else you want to do after this?”

“Not really.” Replied Hollie with a shake of her head. “I spend most of my time reading and cultivating, so I don’t know what people do on dates.”

“Yeah, but that’s not all there is to life. There must be something else you enjoy doing besides that.” Seth felt quite awkward saying that since that was pretty much what he did as well during his previous life.

Hollie fell into deep thought for a moment before shaking her head. “Nothing comes to mind.”

The two continued chatting while Seth was trying to figure out how to make her have some fun. After being done with the food, they started walking through the streets of the middle ring.

“Hollie, let’s make a deal.”

Raising an eyebrow, she asked: “What deal?”

“You have to do everything I tell you to for today. At the end of the day, I will answer one question for every genuine smile I see on your lips. Don’t worry, I won’t ask you to do anything improper. What do you say?”

“And what if there’s none?” asked Hollie, finding the entire deal thing strange.

“Then, no answer for you. This way, I can make sure you’re trying. You can even put suggestions on things that might increase your chances of winning a few answers. This is an excellent opportunity to get some of that knowledge you want.”

Since she had nothing to lose, she agreed almost immediately, but she was sure there was no way she would smile. She didn’t even remember how to smile, having not done it ever since she was a little girl.

Smiling wryly, he took her to accessory shops next and walked with her through the stalls, but seeing no reaction from her again, he gave up eventually.

He kept pulling her from place to place, letting her look at clothes and cute animals, telling her some jokes recommended by the system, and so on.

The girl got scared, seeing two people dressed so well in front of her door, and said while stuttering: “Y-yes?”

Seth crouched down to not scare the little girl too much and said: “What is your name, little one?”

The girl was still just as scared as she stuttered: “I-Isota.”

“Are your parents home, Isota?” asked Seth next.

The girl looked back and remained silent for a bit before turning back towards him and saying: “N-no.”

Seth sighed and stood up. Turning towards Hollie, he said: “Ascended healer Hollie, I know you rushed here to help these people as soon as you could, but as you can see, they don’t appear to be home right now. Since we must leave the city soon, we have no choice but to give up.”

Hollie looked even more confused now, but then the girl in the back asked in a trembling voice: “Is miss a healer?”

Hollie wanted to decline, but Seth cut her off by turning towards the girl again and saying: “Ascended Hollie is the greatest healer in the entire kingdom. She once saved a man who has lost his heart in combat. If she can’t save someone, no one else but god can do it.”

The girl moved past Seth and grabbed onto the flabbergasted Hollie’s legs while saying through sobs: “Please, miss, save my mother. Please. I don’t want to be left alone. Please, miss, I beg you. I’m sorry I lied. Please.”

Hollie panicked, not knowing what to do, and looked at Seth, asking for help with her eyes.

Seth moved to lift the girl and rubbed her head while saying: “Isota, don’t worry, that’s why she came here. Take her to see your mother.”

The girl nodded and dragged Hollie inside. Seth chuckled at the panicky expression on Hollie’s face and followed right after. The little girl brought them inside to a woman that was lying on a torn piece of cloth placed over the hard ground. Her face was slightly purple, and she appeared to be barely breathing. A constant whizzing sound kept escaping her mouth with each labored breath.

The moment Hollie saw the woman, she froze in place, not moving forward a single step, no matter how hard the little girl would pull.

“Miss?” asked the little girl as she turned around, but Hollie didn’t even react, her eyes fixed on the woman.

Turning towards Seth, tears started welling up in the corner of her eyes and she wanted to say something when the little girl pulled on her sleeve again.

“Hurry and check the patient, miss Hollie. She looks quite bad.” Said Seth as he pointed at the woman with his eyes.

Hollie looked again at the woman and then at the little girl. Tears started flowing from the corner of her eyes and she nodded before moving closer to the woman. She understood what Seth was trying to do after having healed all her wounds that night. As angry as she was, she couldn’t risk the little girl’s chance to save her mother.

Moving her trembling hand, he slowly touched the passed-out woman. Seth knew a venomous spider that was quite common in these parts of the world bit her. The poison would not be fatal, only made one sick for a couple of days, but that wouldn’t be the case for someone whose kidneys were damaged and couldn’t filter out the weak poison from their bodies.

Seth started moving life energy towards her kidneys continuously before starting to slowly take care of the poison using his destruction energy and the system.

Hollie could only sit there, one hand placed on the woman’s arm, hoping Seth knew what he was doing. It took over half an hour before the color started returning to the woman’s face. Ten minutes later, the woman started coughing, and she slowly opened her eyes.

The little girl jumped into the confused mother’s arms and bawled her eyes out while Hollie heaved a sigh of relief and stood up.

Giving Seth an angry look, she turned to leave, only for the little girl to claw onto her leg again.

“Thank you, miss. Thank you for saving mama.”

Hollie looked at the little girl that was crying tears of happiness this time and bent down to help her up again. The woman quickly put two and two together and fell to her knees as well.

“Thank you, miss, for saving my life.”

Seeing the two, with tears rolling down her cheeks, Hollie smiled at them and said to the little girl: “You take care of your mama, little Isota. Okay?”

The girl nodded and continued crying. Rubbing the little girl’s head, she turned towards the woman who was kneeling on the floor and said: “I appreciate the thanks, but I’m not the one who healed you. He is.”

Once her words ended, he pointed toward Seth.

Seth smiled wryly when he noticed that the woman was bowing toward him now.

The woman bowed her head again one more time before moving to take Isota in her arms.

Seth turned towards Hollie and said: “Let’s go.”. Hollie nodded and even if she was still angry, still followed him.

After reaching the door, Seth teleported five gold coins on the cloth the woman was laying just before. He stole around 32 gold coins today using space magic from merchants, so he didn’t mind helping the two girls some more. After all, they let him complete his goal and witness a smile from Hollie.
