Chapter 34: Town walk

Caitlin poked her head into the back of the carriage and looked at Seth’s family. 

“Nice to meet you. I’m Caitlin. Are you two really teacher Seth’s parents?”

Nash wanted to stand up and introduce himself when Seth frowned and spoke from next to Hilda: “Caitlin, what are you doing here? Didn’t I tell you all to wait in town for me to return?”

“Teacher, the food there is horrible, and you didn’t leave any extra with us. I would have died if I had to spend one more day eating hard bread with potatoes and poorly cooked meat.”

Seth sighed while both his parents started laughing and his mother said: “Seth, give the poor girl some food, and don’t be rude. Isn’t she one of your students?”

Seth’s eye twitched when he saw the victorious smile on Caitlin’s face and he took out some food from his storage space.

Caitlin jumped in the back and started eating while chatting with Seth’s parents like she’s known them for a lifetime. Seth eventually had enough of listening to old stories about when he was a baby and walked back out.

“She begged me to, and you didn’t tell me I shouldn’t bring any of them.” Said Leora matter-of-factly as she closed her eyes and started gathering light energy toward her source.

For the rest of the journey, Caitlin spent most of her time with Seth’s parents, even using them to extort some more food from time to time. Once they returned to the place they made camp at, they only found just Lisa there, studying.

“Where are the others?” asked Seth, without taking the time to introduce his parents yet.

“Hello, teacher. They are in town. I don’t know what they’re doing.”

Seth nodded and followed up by briefly introducing Lisa as well before making his way toward the city. He didn’t look for the girls, first heading for the “Hidden page.” Inn.

Once he stepped inside, he found Molly cleaning up the two tables in the lobby. She had grown quite a lot during the year he was away, but she was just as energetic as before.

Hearing the door open, she looked up and was about to rush to welcome the customer when she seemed to remember something. Breaking into a wide smile, she left the cloth on a table she was cleaning and rushed toward Seth.

Seth sighed and sat with the girl at one table, telling her a few things about the capital. He could see her eyes growing larger with the mention of pretty much any minor detail, the academy, the ascended, the royal family, and so on.

The two’s chat eventually attracted the innkeeper’s attention, and he came out of the back room. Seeing Seth talking with his daughter at the table, he smiled and came to them.

“Good to see you again, kid. Anything you need this time?”

Seth shook his head before placing ten books he prepared prior and 20 gold coins on the counter: “I only came to see you guys and give you a little something to thank you for all your help. Give those books to Cain. The coins are yours.”

The innkeeper pocketed the coins without shame, knowing this was nothing for an ascended like Seth, before carrying the books in the back. Seth spent a while longer with the two before standing up to leave.

“Cain told me to ask if you would meet him if you ever return. What should I tell him?” asked the innkeeper just as Seth stood up.

“I still have something to do in town. Tell him I’ll come by later.”

The innkeeper nodded, and Seth stepped out of the inn. After the ‘Hidden Page’ inn, he headed straight for the city lord’s mansion in the center of the town.

“Who are you?” asked the two guards at the entrance as they readied their spears.

Seth summoned a destruction orb and said: “Ascended from the capital. Can you let the town lady know someone is looking for her?”

He knew the wife of the town lord took the role upon herself and was now in charge of the town. It was not a peaceful transition, mostly because people disapproved of a female ruler. The dark guilds knew Seth had a hand in killing the former lord and saving the city lady, so they silenced any disapproving voice.

The town lady walked out hurriedly at the news, only to freeze when she saw Seth. Once she recovered her bearing, she bowed toward Seth while waving the guards away.

“Sir, it’s good to see you again.”

Seth smiled and lifted one hand towards her as he said: “Call me Seth, miss Sophia. I’m happy to see you’re doing well.”

Sophia smiled and moved to shake hands with Seth, but the moment she did, she felt her body heating up. She didn’t know what was going on, but before she could think too deeply, Seth stroked her hand with his finger and asked: “Do you have a place where we could speak alone?”

Sophie gulped and nodded before leading Seth to her office. Her way of walking as she tried to keep her legs from parting too much was quite funny for Seth, but he didn’t mention it.

Once they entered the office, Sophie directly sat down on the couch before motioning for Seth to do the same. She knew it was disrespectful to sit down before a guest, even more so, an ascended, but she didn’t want Seth to see anything embarrassing while looking at her legs.

Seth sat down as well and before Sophie could even mutter a word, he said: “I’m going to be frank, Sophie, since I can’t stay too long in this town. I know you’ve been lonely ever since… you know… and I also need some place to burn some steam. I wonder if miss Sophie would be interested.”

Once both of them were dressed, Seth caressed her sad face and said: “No need to be sad, we had a great time together. Who knows, if you ever find your way to the capital, we might get to meet each other again. If you still have found no one by then, we can have some more fun.”

Sophie put on a forced smile and nodded before saying: “Let me at least accompany you out of the town.”

Seth shook his head and said: “I need to go see Cain before leaving. He appears to have something he needs from me, and I’ll leave right after paying him a visit. Thank you for this and for not giving up on those girls.”

Seth bent forward and pecked her lips before saying: “I wish you a happy life, Sophie.”. As his words ended, he disappeared from the room in an instant.

Sophie put on a serious face and poked her head out before looking at the red-faced guards. Her face turning serious, she said: “If word of this gets out, you’re all fired.”

After the guards nodded, she got back inside her office and sat down on the couch.

Looking at the mess that had become of her office, Sophie smiled and whispered: “Stay safe, and thank you, for everything. I really hope we’ll meet again, Seth.”
