Chapter 8: CH8: Playing with balls

Back in the dormitories we get greeted by our worried dormmates, well my dormmates. It seems Hermione doesn't get along well with hers. I am not realy suprised at that, if I hadn't been so enthusiastic with my magical studies as well, I would have found her attitude of correcting every little mistake slightly annoying too. At least she doesn't speak it out everytime anymore, but only because I straight up told her how she would end up alone for eternity if she continues to push everyone away.

That must have awoken some of the inborn memories because she changed abruptly after that. I too did a little bit of searching, or remembering? And damn there are some terrible fates of some elementals who grew a little too old, while having no one that cared about them. One of the more awful and sad ones was of an earth elemental self destructing and sinking a part of PangeaThe continents we have now were all a single one during the times the dinosaurs lived, named Pangea with the ensuing earthquake. And the millions of living beings on it. The cause: He was severely antisocial in his first centurie and after that nobody wanted to asociate with him anymore. He became a lunatic who would cause some earthquakes for no reason or build something illogical. At some point he wanted to create the biggest earthquake he could make and thus self destructed fueling the quake. The memory of his final moment came from a volcanic elemental drawn to the site by the seismic activity caused in the process.

Anyway, back to my worried dormmates. "Yes, everything is fine. It was about the fistmark I sported during the sorting and the disturbance on the train, nothing serious.", I reply to a enquiry made by Seamus.

"Still, you got to meet the Headmaster personally. That is the mightiest man in the world we are talking about!", comes Rons answer with admiration towards Dumbledore. 

"Anyway it is fine now, don't you have any homework left to do?", Hermione smirks as collective groanings erupts around us.

"Don't remind me."

"It is too much!"

"Someone. Please. Help us!"

Leaving the groaning crowd behind, we seat ourselves in our usual couch. "Now luckily, I have my homework done already and I am bloody sure you have yours too.", I cast an enquiring look at her.

"Mhm, I did. Of course I did."

"Perfect. I have thought of a game we could play. It is at the same time a little relaxed training for our control of elemental energie."

"Now you have my attention. How did you come up with it?"

"You know, I had a rough start with magic. But it gets better now thst I use it daily, so I thsought that you should also have a pretty hard time with elemental energie, despite the memories. One of my methods to better my control was to create small balls and let them do circles and similar stuff. Now the game I thought was, that we both make small balls and pass them to each other. The other side will create a thin layer if their own energie around the ball they are givenand pass it back. Once one cannot control it anymore, the ball will be shot into the ground and a new one will be formed."

"Seems interesting. But first I need to be able to form a ball. And won't others notice something?"

"Creating a ball is easy, just compress your energie. As for others, they will see that we pass balls of light to each other, nothing else. They can't perceive elemental energie after all."

"Makes sense. I will try it now."

She frowns, while I turn on the vision to see how she is doing it. It looks relatively promissing, but you cann't realy do anything wrong with compressing energie. At least not with the quantities we are working with here. As the formation of the ball draws to a close, I deactivate the vision to see a small green ball floating in the air.

"You were right, this is pretty easy. Shall we try it out then?"

"Of course!", I say. Promptly my own ball shining in a violet color appears before me. "I think two are enough for now."

Then, slowly, I push out my ball. A bit hesitant, Hermione does the same with hers. Once the balls passed half their journey, I receive the green ball. I gently wrap it in lightning energie so that I can control it, changing its color to violet. I then guide it the rest of the way to me before looking over to Hermione, who also just finished guiding the ball.

"Touching anothers energie like this feels weird. And I still feel a bit of what happened to my ball. Being wrapped up like this feels warm and safe. I don't know how to describe it.", Hermione states, staring curiously at the ball in front off her.

"Thats also a first experience for me and I feel the same. Bu it is not uncomfortable, nor does it feel wrong, so should we continue?"

"Yeah, I zhink we can."

"Than here we go"

I push out the ball again, only to receive mine back. 

Back and forth we continue, from time to time a ball drops or I have to wait for Hermione as she is a fair bit slower then me. But she is getting faster.

We end up playing like this until deep into the night before we decide to let it be for now and go to sleep.

Time flies by fast. We continue our little game with more and more balls and alternating speeds. Of course only after homework is done, but thats no problem. Anyone who has problems with their homework in the first half of their first schoolyear is a fool. Even Snape doesn't bombard you with overly complex tasks, so I find it amusing whenever Ron complaines to everyone who wants to listen that the homework is too much. 

And then, one day the usual breakfest is gone, replaced by pumpkin pie and pumpkin juice.

Unknowingly, Halloween had come and we are here already for two months. Two great months, I might add. Despite several letdowns, such as Snape and Quirrell, these were two great months nonetheless. And now, celebtations are in order.
