Helios unblinkingly watched the Primus coming toward him, the Dolore demon in hot pursuit. The Dolore’s sheer size gave him an overpowering urge to flee. It was roughly twice the height of an average adult human, at least ten feet tall.

It possessed six crab-like legs with a reddish exoskeleton. Its thick front arms acted like another pair of legs, similar in appearance to the other six but enlarged to reach the ground in front. Another noteworthy thing was a deep slit between its brows.

Why did I agree to this? If either of us fuck this up, I’m dead. How does Tsiyaha intend to effectively slow the Primus down? It weaves through the stalagmites with absolute ease and is much faster than I am. Whatever she has in mind better work. This is getting ridiculous now.

The Primus demon seemingly reacted to his thoughts, dodging a thin stalagmite with ape-like agility. It reached out to grip the rock outcropping with an oversized hand, using it as an anchor to swing itself in another direction. It navigated through the maze of stalagmites without slowing. As it drew nearer, Helios could see a cunning gleam in its eyes.

Unable to restrain its excitement, the ape-like demon grinned at seeing him remain fixated in place. The sound of smashing rock alerted the Primus demon. It stumbled while looking over its shoulder. Its smile quickly faltered, replaced with a frown of confusion.

The Dolore demon effortlessly crashed through a stalagmite obstructing its path, pouncing toward its prey. It successfully pinned the burly Primus demon underneath its pointed forelegs while roaring in satisfaction.

“What are you waiting for, Helios? This is our chance to escape!” Tsiyaha shouted, nimbly jumping down from her hiding place, abandoning whatever she was doing.

She tossed the obsidian dagger to Helios. He ignored it, allowing it to bounce carelessly off his chest. Igniting a small flare of pain from his injuries. Tsiyaha paused after realising Helios wasn’t following, urgently reaching out to grab his arm while attempting to tug him away.

“Wait. There’s something I need to do. You can go, this will be very dangerous. But without risk, there’s no reward,” Helios replied, resolutely shaking off her arm.

“There’s something wrong with your head. Suit yourself. Die here for all I care!” Tsiyaha said, angrily pulling away her hand.

Tsiyaha glanced at him one last time before fleeing through the maze of stalagmites. Once she disappeared from view, he inhaled deeply to mentally prepare himself. He looked toward the Dolore demon currently stapling the Primus under its body weight.

The Primus demon desperately looked around for an escape, locking gazes with Helios watching nearby. A brief flash of hope appeared in its eyes before quickly disappearing, the reality of its situation setting in. The Primus’ body tensed while turning its head in a futile attempt to prevent drool from dripping into its eyes. The crab-like Dolore demon’s slavering jaws hovered above it.

Tsiyaha’s not wrong. I am crazy. But if I want to survive, I need to take some gambles. In my past life, I’ve seen that Dolore demons are resilient, able to withstand a building falling on top of them. They can also still be killed, just like anything else. It’s time to bet it all.

“Oi, Primus demon, I have a proposition for you! If you swear unquestioning loyalty to me, I’ll do everything in my power for you to survive this encounter. I swear it upon my true name, Helios. The decision’s yours,” Helios shouted, drawing the entangled pair’s attention.

The Dolore demon’s eyes remained fixed on its prey in front of it. Instead, a third eye embedded in its brow opened to lock on Helios. He felt his body involuntarily shudder as he met its gaze. It spoke to him with an assortment of hisses and clicking noises, the words directly translated inside his mind.

“You would sacrifice yourself for this plaything? You’ve piqued my curiosity. It would be amusing to allow you to try. Answer him, plaything. Your life is in the balance. What say you?” the Dolore demon said, piercing a sharp foreleg down through the pinned Primus demon’s thick hide. The Primus demon roared in pain, attempting to thrash free. “You will not successfully escape on your own. You are completely at my mercy. Tell him your verdict, my patience grows thin.”

“Ack! I swear fealty upon my true name, Krutak!” Krutak shouted, the guttural grunts translated to Helios via the Soul Brand.

I acknowledge the fealty sworn to your lord. Serve them well,” Satan’s voice echoed inside the pair’s minds before quickly fading away after their oath.

Satan’s ever-present consciousness drew out an identical replica of Helios’ Soul Brand. It flew across the distance and embedded itself on Krutak’s chest, searing a Sigil on the surface above his heart.

“Act now, or you’ll face the Hell gate’s retribution!” Krutak cried out in desperation.

“What makes you doubt that I’ll keep my word? I’ve sworn upon my true name,” Helios indifferently replied, stimulating the Soul Brand deep inside him.

He resolutely targeted the narrowest part of one of the Dolore’s forelimbs. It demon suddenly shrieked in pain, retreating away from Krutak in an explosion of chiton and blood. The Dolore demon’s pincer was severed at the joint.

Blood spluttered from the pincer still embedded in Krutak’s shoulder. Krutak locked eyes with Helios, flinching away from his intense gaze. The burning Soul Brand was visible through his eyes, pulsing with intensity after igniting the true meaning of his name, Break.

Krutak pushed himself into a kneeling position, reaching up to tightly grip the foreleg impaling him. He ruthlessly tore it out in a shower of blackened blood. He suppressed the pain with a grunt to briefly lower his head in submission toward Helios. Pushing himself to his feet to face the Dolore demon, his posture straightened to his full height. He pulled back his shoulders and puffed out his chest to display his new sigil with pride, grinning wryly at the injured Dolore demon cowering in front of him.

“It seems things aren’t always what they seem. My new lord is one blessed with the Hell gate’s favour. What fate lies in store for one such as yourself after facing one of the chosen? You can bleed, you can die,” Krutak gloated while loosening his shoulders.

Reaching down, Krutak picked up the severed forelimb. He began to beat it against his chest in a challenge, ignoring the blood seeping from his own wound. Helios walked to stand at his shoulder. The Dolore flinched at the coarse sound of his footsteps across the black sand.

“Interesting. My magic is far more effective than I’d anticipated. I wasn’t sure that it’d work on something so much stronger than me. Thank you for so graciously becoming my first apostle, Krutak. Today we shall feast,” Helios said with a predatory smile while examining his hands. Krutak wordlessly licked his lips in response.
