The armoured demon turned away from Helios’ hiding place among the obsidian stalagmites. It was about to follow after its scaled companion to investigate the disturbance with its winged leader. While it was separated, Helios took the opportunity to creep closer. Once he was almost within arms reach, Helios stimulated the Soul Brand within him.

Break!

Unseen tendrils erupted from his body, boring their way through the chinks in the Primus demon's armour like it didn’t exist. Before it was even aware of any danger, the tendrils burrowed deeper and then burst apart. The unsuspecting demon was torn to shreds in a shower of blood and gore.

Helios commenced the breathing ritual, capturing the stray strands of soul essence remaining in the air to devour them. Unsatisfied, he indifferently stepped forward into a puddle of blood to stalk after his next victim, the scaled demon with three horns.

My Soul Brand is powerful but it doesn’t leave enough life force behind for me to harvest. My obsidian dagger is a far more effective tool on the hunt. Now I’ve evened up the playing field, I can use it to finish the job.

Helios tightly gripped the obsidian dagger in his hand, he rarely let it leave his side. In front of him crouched the scaled demon trembling in fear, causing Helios to pause. He examined over the demon’s shoulder.

Tsiyaha! Who is that and where did they come from?

Tsiyaha was being pinned underfoot by a tall demon, clutching futilely at its ankles. The new arrival was a blood-red colour with white patterns decorating its skin. It had spiked quills covering its shoulders and back, red electricity bounced between them. Tsiyaha’s intended prey was held suspended off the ground, her wings flapping in protest as she attempted to struggle free.

The winged demon thrust her makeshift spear into her captor’s thigh. It angrily hissed in pain, directing lightning to retaliate. Accompanied by the sound of booming thunder, the winged demon was burnt to a smouldering crisp in a flash of light. The spear acted as a lightning rod, the energy jumped from the corpse to the weapon, reducing it to ash in an instant and cauterising the gaping wound. Tsiyaha’s struggles increased as she snarled in desperation.

The magic-user lifted the winged demon’s corpse close, devouring what remained of her life force. Something bumped into Helios’ chest, distracting him from the scene in front. The scaled demon involuntarily cried out in surprise. The magic-user whipped around at the disturbance, simultaneously unleashing a supercharged bolt of lightning toward them. It struck the scaled demon first, causing a short delay for Helios to react.

Break!

Helios acted instinctively. His Soul Brand made a connection with the other demon’s lightning and dispersed it moments away from striking him. The scaled demon wasn’t so lucky. Its charred corpse slumped against his chest before slowly crumpling to the ground at his feet. Helios gave his meat shield a brief glance before looking up and making eye contact with the magic-user. They could each see their unique Soul Brands in the depths of the other’s black eyes.

“So, another magic-user. I thought I might be the only one. Tell me, what is your name?” the magic-user said, grinding his heel onto Tsiyaha’s chest. She gasped at the unexpected pain.

“Helios. And yours?” Helios replied, he glanced toward Tsiyaha’s suffering and couldn’t summon any pity toward her. His thoughts were focused on survival.

“My name is Sogril. You’re the first I’ve encountered in this place worthy of knowing it. Now, after I deal with the trash at my feet, we can get better acquainted. She knows more than she should. Do not think that I’ve forgotten you spying on me, little demon. You have ripened quite nicely, it’s time for me to harvest the fruit,” Sogril said, shifting his attention to Tsiyaha while hungrily licking his lips.

“You’re mistaken. She belongs to me!” Helios shouted, throwing his palm outward. Break!

Sogril flinched at his words, leaping backward. He was unable to entirely evade the invisible tendrils reaching for him. They blasted open a hole in the side of his chest. He clutched at the wound with a grimace of pain as lightning gathered across the spikes on his back. It began lashing out in all directions.

Helios focused his magic in front of him while charging toward Tsiyaha, unable to see through the blinding light. When his vision cleared, Sogril was gone. Tsiyaha climbed to her feet relatively unharmed to stand by his side while brushing off sand.

“That was the demon I saw slaughter Primus demons on the beach. I can’t believe you were able to chase him away. How were you able to stop his lightning?” Tsiyaha asked, her voice oozing with a desire for power.

“Never mind that, I think we have bigger problems. We’ve got bigger problems. The Dolore demon’s back and our little magic display’s drawn its prey’s attention,” Helios muttered.

“You’re right. The Primus being chased by the Dolore demon has locked onto your aura. I think it intends for you to fight the Dolore or take its place as its next meal,” Tsiyaha angrily hissed.

“Then what are we supposed to do now, can we escape?” Helios asked.

“It’s too late for that. Our only option is to slow the Primus down and ensure that its fate is sealed,” Tsiyaha replied.

“If that’s the case, why not go into hiding? You can easily escape,” Helios said.

“We have a contract. I don’t intend to break it that easily. Get ready, they’re almost here. I’ll climb the rock,” Tsiyaha stated.

“I guess that means I get to be the bait again,” Helios dryly said.

“You guessed it. Stand right where you are. Also, give me your obsidian dagger, I need it. Also, try not to do anything stupid,” Tsiyaha replied, looking at him with a brief flash of concern.

He handed her his make-shift obsidian dagger and she quickly scaled the rock, blending seamlessly. Helios could only detect her position if she moved. He heard the sound of rock-striking-rock as she began chipping away just below the peak of the stalagmite.

I hope she knows what she’s doing. That noise isn’t exactly subtle.

Helios sighed heavily, resolutely turning to face the approaching threat. He could hear the crashing stalagmites and footsteps getting closer. He didn’t need to wait long for them to come into view. Helios shifted nervously but maintained his position.

Helios tilted his head, recognising the Primus demon in the front. It was the demon with bark-like skin they had encountered outside of their outcrop hiding place. It was bipedal yet ran on all fours like a quadruped, using its front knuckles for extra momentum. After seeing Helios, Its desperate expression filled with hope, increasing its speed while dodging stalagmites and charging toward him.

Behind the Primus, Helios caught a glimpse of the Dolore demon, causing him to flinch. It was similar in size and appearance to the ones he saw on Earth before he died, giving him a strong sense of dread.
