Helios stood at the edge of the clearing with his companions. They stayed outside the range of the Luminare’s whipping venomous tail as it battled the Phantom assassin from the Tsun’kat Familia. Its mysterious intangible robed figure hovered above the ground.
They move so fast that I’m barely able to see their attacks. The Luminare may be able to continuously disperse the Echo. But they haven’t been able to avoid injury entirely.
Red flashes illuminated the clearing. The Luminare demon was decorated with countless bleeding wounds over her body. Her chest heaved from heavy panting. Making one last desperate attack before collapsing from exhaustion, she lashed out with her venomous tail. Unlike all the previous times, this one made a solid connection.
The spike scored past the Phantom’s skull, leaving behind a sizzling mark. The red lighting dancing between the embedded Abyss Anchors fanned out and dispersed into the trees. Revealing the Phantom’s appearance clearly for the first time. Helios could see strange patterns over the surface of the small rods jutting from its body.
Just looking at the symbols makes me dizzy. The complex data contained within it’s directly transferred to my mind. I can’t make any sense of it. What does Phantom assassin mean?
Reinvigorated by the Phantom assassin returning to physical form, the Luminare rose upright onto two legs. Standing at least twenty feet tall, Helios felt tiny in comparison. The Phantom was only a little bit smaller, roughly the height of Dolore they defeated.
“Your time’s run out, Vonar. You’re mine now,” the Luminare cackled.
“Uilron, you’re already dead. Never underestimate your prey,” Vonar indifferent replied. He seemed to be aware of the invisible tendrils creeping past him. Slightly glancing over his shoulder at Helios before returning his attention to Uilron.
“You? A fledging demon only one step into the Luminare caste. I was almost ostracized from Fastidium for ambushing you feeding. Fortunately for me, you passed the threshold. I left you alone but you won’t stop pestering me,” Uilron scornfully replied with a sneer.
“No, not me. Him,” Vonar answered, nodding his head toward Helios.
Uilron began laughing uproariously, steadying herself on a nearby tree. The face in the wood was watching her in horror. Her claws were deeply piercing the bark. Helios’s face was impassive as tendrils extended from his outstretched palm and entered her wounds. Her laughter was cut short as she became aware of black veins crawling under her skin.
Sweat beaded Helios brow as his face twisted into a sneer. His hand contorted into a claw, instinctively aiming his staff directly in the path of his intangible tendrils. They reactively coiled around the shaft of wood. When they passed through the obsidian-like material at the end, they were split into multiple threads that spread to engulf the Luminare demon.
“I can’t do this on my own!” Helios said through gritted teeth.

“Then let me assist you,” Vonar confidently answered and immediately lunged forward. Uilron swung at his head in a counter-attack. He dodged under her claw as it passed harmlessly above him, spinning to drive an elbow into her sternum. She gasped in shock and stumbled back a step. He threw his head backward, piercing a horn through the underside of her jaw. He pulled it free in a spurt of rancid blood, stepping behind her as she doubled over in pain. He grappled her arms to her sides and restrained her in place. “Do it!”
Helios unleashed a mighty roar, simultaneously closing his outstretched hand into a fist. He could feel his tendrils burrowing through Uilron’s flesh. Break! The tendrils erupted outward, bursting the Luminare apart from the inside in a shower of gore. Raining down across the clearing.
Vonar stood stunned in the centre while covered in black blood. He brushed an entrail from his fur and reached down to retrieve Uilron’s head from the carnage. He tossed it to Helios who hurriedly caught it.
“Why are you giving me this?” Helios hesitantly asked.
“Her essence is dispersing. Your companions and I can consume the remnants from the clearing. Stop wasting time,” Vonar replied, picking up a severed arm and consuming it into dust to emphasize his words.
Krutak and Tsiyaha edged into the clearing and began hungrily devouring Uilron’s dispersed essence. Helios examined the huge head in his hands before activating the breathing ritual. A thick stream of life force entered his mouth. He was submerged in a feeling of ecstasy. He directed the energy to start making alterations to his body.
Uilron’s mutations aren’t very appealing to me aside from the acid. It could be useful but its cost in life force is too high. I’m going to stick with what I already have.
After briefly contemplating each of Uilron’s mutations, Helios chose to enhance his physique and Soul Brand. He stopped his growth once he reached the mid-six-foot range. His muscles bulged with corded strength while remaining lean. The rest of the essence he poured into his Soul Brand which eagerly accepted it. His features became more defined with a decorative pattern forming on his brow over his closed third eye. His tendrils took on a hair-like texture but retained their paralytic effect.
Helios blinked his eyes and left his trance. He surveyed around him, discovering that Vonar had wordlessly left. Where he had stood, there was an offering left in his place. It was the neatly severed spike from Uilron’s tail. Helios stooped down to retrieve it. Tsiyaha walked over to stand beside him. He handed the spike to her.
Tsiyaha looked very similar to how she had earlier, growing to a height similar to Helios. The one difference was her luscious hair had changed to something resembling eyeless snakes draping to the ground. They hissed in his direction, baring their fangs. He noticed a toxin coating the teeth resembling the spike in Tsiyaha’s hand.
Krutak joined them staring wistfully in the direction Vonar had disappeared. His body was covered in an uneven rocky texture and towered over his companions. Standing almost twice their height. His horns had become asymmetric in size and shape, jutting in completely different directions. His eyes were protected by a stony visor over his brow.
He glanced down to discover Helios examining his changes. Shifting uncomfortably, he noisily cleared his throat with a cough. Helios smirked and looked away.
It looks like we all made it into the Dolore caste. This’s a lot more reassuring for when we arrive at Fastidium.
