Chapter 1: Chapter 1 (2019)

The white cloth danced in front of Jihoon’s face as Sumin made her final inspection of the wedding dress. The seamstress and Jihoon’s future mother in law exclaimed with delight.

 

“It’s perfect!” Sumin’s mother beamed. 

 

“The bride’s beauty is what completes the wedding dress,” the seamstress complimented.

 

Sumin scowled into the three way mirror. “Should I lose some more weight? My upper arms look bigger than I thought…” she sighed. 

 

“No, you look beautiful enough,” Jihoon stood up and gave Sumin a peck on the cheek. 

 

“Really?” Sumin’s face lit up as she turned to face Jihoon. 

 

“Really, really,” Jihoon reassured her. Behind him, he could hear the seamstress and Sumin’s mother giggling. 

 

“What a happy couple! The two of you must be so excited for your wedding!” the seamstress clapped her hands in delight. “This is what I love most about my job, witnessing the bliss of two people in love!” 

 

Jihoon smiled. Yes, he indeed was a happy man. He had met Sumin only two years ago but in those two years he felt as though she had completed his life. She was calm, soft spoken and kind hearted. She was like the blue ocean; she embraced all of him as he was. She was constant and predictable like the white waves gently washing on the shore. Now, they were just two weeks away from joining themselves in marriage. 

 

“I’ve got to get back to work now. Enjoy the rest of the day with your mother,” Jihoon gave her another peck on the cheek.

“Don’t work too hard,” Sumin placed a hand against his cheek. 

 

“No, you should work harder and earn more money so Sumin can quit her job and care for the children!” Sumin’s mother teased. Jihoon, however, knew that she was serious. Sumin’s parents had been against their relationship at first. Her parents did not like the fact that Jihoon had come from the countryside, but in the end they accepted him out of love for their daughter. 

 

“Yes, Mother. I’ll work harder!” Jihoon proclaimed as he bowed to her before heading towards the door. 

 

Once he was outside the dress shop, Jihoon breathed in the early spring air. It was late March and the weather had finally begun to warm in Seoul. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom. He would have to take Sumin to view the blossoms before they withered. Perhaps this weekend, he noted. He could see if he could take a day off. After all, the cherry blossoms would only be in blossom for a short period. 

 

Thinking of the cherry blossoms, nostalgia began to fill him. Just ten years ago when he was still 19, cherry blossoms would signal the beginning of a new school year. What sort of beginning did the cherry blossoms signal now? His new life with Sumin perhaps? 

 

Snapping out of his old memories and thoughts, Jihoon began to head towards the bus station. He waited patiently on his phone at the crosswalk waiting for the signal to turn green. A slight breeze blew past him causing him to look up for a moment.

 

A second was all it took. There he saw her. Just on the other side of the crosswalk waiting to cross. No. It couldn’t be her. 

 

Jihoon stared at her and belatedly heard the signal to cross. She was already crossing, walking towards him. He took a step forward. One step, two steps, three steps and then she was almost in front of him. She didn’t seem to notice him. Just as she was about to pass him, he reached out and grasped her lightly by the arm, just enough to stop her. She paused in surprise and looked up at him. 

 

Then he knew. It was her. The moment she looked up at him, he saw that recognition registered in her eyes. It was the same face from ten years ago. The face that disappeared from his life but sometimes still reappeared in his head. Why? Why now? Why did she come back into his life now? 

 

“Minhee,” Jihoon whispered just loud enough for only the two of them to hear.
