Chapter 6 – Rainy night

During the holiday, the school was quiet. Chi Tang noticed the Nanlin No. 1 High School plaque and realized she had wandered there.

The rain had wet the sweater she was wearing. Her soaked sweater cap hid her face. Her thoughts were like thick, damp earth, and she felt as if she were drowned in water.

The side door was open, and the light in the guard room was turned on, but no one was present. Chi Tang entered the room. She walked through the pitch-black teaching building, the shadows of the trees swaying before and behind, which was a little scary. The building behind the classrooms was the girls’ dormitories.

Chi Tang saw a single glowing window.

She walked over there.

The head of the dormitory also did not leave. She was sitting in the common room watching TV when she noticed Chi Tang and asked, “You haven’t gone home?”

Chi Tang shrugged and walked upstairs, leaving a trail of wet footprints on the floor.

She knocked on the locked door of 501.

You Yu’s voice could be heard inside, and she asked, “Who is it?”

“It’s me,” Chi Tang said.

You Yu rose, the chair was dragged, the lock was reversed, and the door was opened.

Chi Tang stepped in and noticed a slew of exam papers and practice books on the table. The learning machine behind her was as industrious as ever.

“Didn’t you return home? Why did you show up to school now?” Chi Tang expected her to ask that, but she didn’t.

You Yu asked her, “Do you want to take a bath? During the holidays, there is no hot water at the school. The aunt has hot water below. You may go to her to get it installed.”

Chi Tang, who was carrying a bag and a cell phone, entered the washroom without glancing back: “I’ll use cold water.”

She was irritated. Can’t I wash in cold water like you?

However, as the chilly water splashed on her body, which was already wet in rain, she shuddered from the inside out.

Chi Tang didn’t mind the sound of the door closing outside; she crouched on the ground with her arms around her body, among the sound of flowing water.

After a while, footsteps approached the door outside, and You Yu knocked, “I got you hot water.”

She went away again, leaving something outside the door.

Chi Tang still carried the kettle into the bathroom and got quickly done with washing herself. She changed her clothing and used a towel to wipe her damp hair. She sat opposite You Yu, who had already sat back to work on the test paper.

“Did I just look like a chicken in soup?” Chi Tang said after a time of silence.

You Yu paused for a while to write, glanced up at her, and shook his head, saying, “It doesn’t look like it.”

You Yu noticed red stains on her cheeks when Chi Tang placed the towel on her head as if she had been beaten.

Despite sitting at the same table and sharing the same dormitory, they were typically alone and don’t talk much. When they sat together there was nothing to say.

The rain outside grew heavier and heavier, pelting the glass windows.
Chi Tang noticed that You Yu, who had been wearing only a T-shirt, had put on her school uniform jacket again. She stood up and brought the pink flower bag she had to You Yu.

“For you,” she said, placing it in front of You Yu.

You Yu looked shocked, took it, and examined it. Inside, there were two bras.

“You… How could you afford to buy this for me?” You Yu was completely confused and embarrassed.

Chi Tang wasn’t any better. She chided herself many times as she walked out of the underwear store with this bag, wondering why she suddenly wanted to buy them for her. Do students who know one other purchase bras for each other? Was she insane?

She had a clear mind at the moment, regretted it, and nearly threw the bras away. But then she remembered an even more humiliating incident at the store. The boss inquired as to which model she had purchased. She had no idea. She made a black face motion. The boss smiled and inquired whether she had purchased it for her sister. To put it in, the boss found her a pink flower gift bag.

Isn’t throwing it away a waste? And at that moment, You Yu’s school uniform flashed across her memory, and she gripped the bag closer to her body so that the rain didn’t splash it.

“Every day, I see you wearing a school uniform, and it makes me feel hot just by looking at you. Don’t throw them away if you don’t want to wear them. I can wear them.” She muttered this while moving to her bunk bed.

For a long time, there was no sound from You Yu below.

Chi Tang eventually heard the sound of the bag, and You Yu said, “Thank you, Chi Tang.”

Chi Tang’s shoulders gradually relaxed, and she realized she had been straining them just now.

The rain was becoming more intense, much like the sound of music that she frequently listened to. She leaned on her side, curled up, and hugged her knees, and she felt instantly better. She had There was a place to sleep, which was good.

Chi Tang’s consciousness gradually faded, and she felt someone unfold her thin blanket and carefully wrapped it around her. The next morning, she awoke with a severe headache. Sitting up, she felt as if the world was spinning around her and she felt nauseous.

Chi Tang climbed onto the ladder, only to realize that her feet were extremely soft, and she nearly tripped over the railing.

“Be careful,” You Yu said, putting her hands behind her.

Chi Tang placed a foot on the ground, became disoriented again, and nearly collapsed. The hands that held her made it easier for her to sit on the bottom bunk.

“You’re sick. You’ve got a fever,” You Yu remarked, touching Chi Tang’s forehead.
