Chapter 7 – Sick

“Are you going to the hospital?”

Chi Tang sat on You Yu’s bed, pressing her forehead hard, and after a while, she said in a dumb voice, “No. I will be fine.”

After speaking, she went to the toilet, her face was wet when she came out, and she climbed back to the upper bunk and lay down.

You Yu had already packed up and was ready to go out. She looked at Chi Tang’s back, hesitated for a while, got up, and left.

There was a community near No. 1 High School. Many teachers lived there, and their headteacher Lao Fang also lived there. Lao Fang had both a son and a daughter, his wife was capable and his family was happy.

You Yu felt envious every time she saw it. She entered the community and came to the door of the headteacher.

“You Yu is here. Have you had breakfast? Come in and let’s eat together.” The mother opened the door to her and greeted her with a smile, “It’s still the same as before. Today, you will help with mathematics for the two demons of my family and have a meal at home at noon. What do you want to eat? I will buy it later.”

You Yu stood at the door and did not go in. She pursed her lips and felt a little embarrassed: “Mother, I can’t help the kids today. Something came up. I’m here to tell you, I’m sorry.”

The mother was stunned, and laughed: “It’s not a big deal.”

She originally wanted to say that it would be fine to make a phone call, but she remembered that this child is different from the other children in her husband’s class. She was struggling, when she came to the school she had nothing, let alone a mobile phone.

She sighed in her heart and asked, “What’s wrong? If you have any difficulties, tell me.”

Seeing her worried look, You Yu shook her head, “No, it’s Chi Tang, my deskmate. She is resting in the dormitory and has a fever. I will stay in the dormitory today to take care of her.”

The mother was surprised: “She has a fever and is sick? Why don’t you notify her family to pick her up? I’ll ask Lao Fang for her family’s contact information.”

“Mother.” You Yu called to her: “Chi Tang came over in the rain last night. She had a mark on her face like she was beaten. It could be because of a fight with her family. If she wanted to go home, she wouldn’t have stayed in the school dorms.”

If you can go home, you should want to go home when you are uncomfortable. Not going back can only mean that going back will make her feel more uncomfortable. You Yu understood the feeling.

“I’ll watch her in the dormitory. If she doesn’t feel better this afternoon, I will take her to the hospital.”

Hearing You Yu’s statement, Lao Fang’s wife had nothing else to say. Seeing You Yu leaving, she thought of something and said hurriedly: “Wait, you guys didn’t eat it. I cooked porridge at home and steamed the buns. Take a little back.”

You Yu refused. The wife said, “Chi Tang is sick. You have to eat when you are sick. It’s best to have some porridge.”

You Yu stopped, “Okay, thank you.”

Carrying the porridge stuffed by Lao Fang’s wife and two bottles, You Yu walked to the dormitory, and opened the door but found that Chi Tang on the upper bunk was missing. She stood there for a while, then put the hot food in her hand on the table, pulled the chair away, and sat down.

She put the book in her hand, thinking, Chi Tang, Did she go home? It’s good, just go home.

It rained so heavily yesterday, but it was a sunny day, bright sunlight coming in from the window, shining on the table, a bit dazzling.

The door opened, and Chi Tang came in, her hair was dark and messy, carrying a small bag. She was also a little surprised to see You Yu sitting there. Just now she got up to go out to buy medicine, but she didn’t see You Yu, and thought she was going out, but she didn’t expect to come back after a while.

You Yu saw the red “xx clinic” printed on the bag in Chi Tang’s hand was the name of the clinic outside the school. She should have bought anti-fever medicine.

Sure enough, Chi Tang opened the bag, took out the pills, and put them directly into her mouth, ready to swallow. You Yu got up and took the thermos, poured a glass of water, and silently pushed it to Chi Tang.

Chi Tang had a unique skill, swallowing pills, but this time she don’t know why, it may be that her throat was drier than normal, and she couldn’t swallow it. She almost choked up. She picked up the cup and drank the water.

You Yu had already opened the packaged porridge, “Drink some porridge and rest.”

Chi Tang was in a bad mood when she was uncomfortable. When she was in a bad mood, she had a bad temper and didn’t want to care about others. However, due to the situation, she just drank the water poured by You Yu.

She looked at the porridge, thinking that You Yu bought it at the breakfast shop outside, thinking about the way she usually ate rice and nibbled on steamed buns. Chi Tang endured discomfort and drank half a bowl.

Probably to thank her for the inexplicable gift last night, thinking about it, wouldn’t it be a waste if she didn’t drink it.

The lone wolf Chi Tang, who was conscious of her grievances, climbed onto the upper bunk and lay down, her back facing her deskmate.

You Yu: It seems to be awful.

She cleaned up the porridge box and sat at the table to continue studying, but this time she would look up Chi Tang from time to time.

Chi Tang had a fever, sweating in her dreams, and often irritably rolled up the quilt and stuffed it to the side. You Yu stepped on the edge of the bed and took the trouble to cover her again and again. Once Chi Tang was awakened by You Yu covering her, her whole body exuded a violent breath, “Don’t cover me.”

You Yu grabbed the railing and asked her seriously: “Then do you drink hot water?”

Chi Tang hammered the bed angrily.

You Yu’s hand touched her forehead: “Are you going to the hospital?”

Chi Tang rolled up the quilt to cover her head and ignored You Yu. You Yu went back to write the test paper and wrote, with an uncontrollable smile on her face, and then she covered her hand without making a sound.

In the end, Chi Tang didn’t go to the hospital. The next morning, Chi Tang’s fever was gone. She swept away the gloomy illness before and became the cool-looking young woman who didn’t care about people. She moved a chair and sat on the balcony, with her back facing the sun, playing games with one leg hanging down, with headphones hanging on her ears.

When she was engrossed in playing with her mobile phone, she would relax, unconsciously humming to the song in the earphones.

You Yu quietly listened to the quiet humming. She didn’t know what song it was, but it was very nice, Chi Tang sang very nicely, and her voice was clear and lingering.

The phone vibrated, and Chi Tang’s singing stopped, she clicked on it and saw her father transfer a thousand yuan to her so that she could buy food outside.

It had always been like that. Her dad scolded her and beat her. She left the house and wandered around. When her dad felt that she should reflect on the outside, he gave her some money. This is a disguised way of dismissing her.

They had fought once, and her father said frankly: “What happened to me when I beat you? I paid you back. Are you still not satisfied? What else do you want?!”

What did she want? When she was younger, she wanted her dad to say something to her: “Daddy was wrong. Dad didn’t consider your thoughts. Dad shouldn’t hit you. There won’t be another time.”

But now, she didn’t want to think about it anymore. She wanted to grow up faster until she reached adulthood, and left that home.

A few days after the holiday, Chi Tang did not go back. She stayed in the dormitory and sometimes went to the Internet cafe to surf the Internet, while You Yu regularly left in the morning and came back in the afternoon. Chi Tang saw that she took math books every day when she went out. Seeing her walking toward the teachers’ community, Chi Tang guessed that she was either going to be a student or a teacher.

The two talked occasionally. Chi Tang asked her one night: “Do you have no money to buy a bra?”

You Yu did not shy away, saying: “It is not very necessary now, I will not buy it.”

Chi Tang: “Then how much do you spend on living a week?”

You Yu: “Ten yuan.”

Chi Tang: “???”

When a bottle of mineral water costs two yuan, how can ten yuan be spent a week? Chi Tang couldn’t believe it, but You Yu was not lying.

She never took the initiative to talk about the situation in her home in the class, no matter how others talked and joked, she was silent, but on that night, she said something.

She said: “My family did not allow me to go to school. When I got here before the school gave me a scholarship of 1,200 yuan. I knew that my family would not give me money, so she gave it to them. It was eight hundred, but in the end, all the money was taken by my family.”

“When I came here, I only had ten yuan, which I kept secretly. I borrowed two hundred yuan from the headteacher. When the holiday is over, I will find some work to make money.”

Chi Tang didn’t know what to say. She had never encountered such a predicament. Facing a miserable classmate, she should have compassion. But when You Yu said this, the calm and seriousness conveyed from the bottom of her heart couldn’t make people pity, just astonishment.

She was silent for too long and You Yu comforted her: “Actually, I am already very lucky. I can still study here, and it will only get better and better in the future.”

Chi Tang thought that You Yu was the opposite of herself. You Yu had something firm in her heart, but she did not.

The upper and lower bunks are separated by a layer of bed boards. Listening to the steady breathing below, Chi Tang suddenly felt that she was a coward.

“I have never seen someone like you.” You Yu said suddenly.

“The love letter that time, most of the students knew that I didn’t write it, but you alone will say it. You are different from them.”

Chi Tang opened her mouth, feeling that the onion in her heart had been stripped of rotten skin. She wanted to say something, but in the end, she just hummed and turned over and ended the topic.
