Chapter 30 (1): Bittersweet

Gu Xi has two unique abilities: One is his ‘golden finger’ that was forcibly given to him. He had never used it once so its specifics are still unknown. The other is his mind-reading ability. This ability enables him to hear the inner voices of others at random.

When Gu Xi was young, he thought that it was a blessing given to him by God. Later, he realized that it was a ruthless reminder of how cruel people can be. This ability was passive, kind of useless really since he couldn’t use it at his will. It could be compared to his heat which comes and goes without warning. It could only randomly let him hear the inner thoughts of random people from a ten-meter radius.

Sometimes, lots of inner thoughts would come pouring into his mind all at once, but some words would be filtered out. Other times, it really wouldn’t let him hear anything useful at all. It could be described as rather weak.

Only where there’s only one person around him would he be able to control it somehow. If he has enough energy, he could focus his mind to read a specific person’s inner thoughts. However, since that would require a lot of energy, he usually wouldn’t waste it on using it since there wasn’t any reason for him to do so.

When he was young, he found it interesting to hear the inner thoughts of the people around him. Soon, it became a burden hearing numerous thoughts inside his head, he almost wanted it to explode.

The older the people he tried to read, the more obscene and explicit their thoughts would become. Some people wouldn’t even treat him as human but something that they found delicious. Some people only treated him respectfully on the surface but were already molesting him inside their heads. At first, it was shocking but later he started to feel nothing. It made him numb. There was a period where he would always vomit and eat nothing because of his mind-reading ability.

A few years ago, his mind-reading ability suddenly went off. He even felt happy that the suffocation he felt from this power would now be gone. It was better to deceive himself with illusions than to actually be able to perceive the reality of this dirty world.

Gu Xi didn’t object and quietly stared at Rong Jing like a delicate porcelain doll, “En.”

Rong Jing wouldn’t approach him without his permission but he wanted him to sit a bit since any careless move could make him fall. But why would an Omega, who could attract the attention of many and had just been frightened, would listen to an Alpha who suddenly appeared out of nowhere and is now behaving suspiciously? He was already lucky that he was being gentle and considerate and didn’t slap him to death.

Unexpectedly, Gu Xi seemed to realize Rong Jing’s worry and took the initiative to move a little towards him.

This protagonist sure is considerate! Sure enough, as described in the novel, he really is beautiful inside and out. Even if this novel’s genre is kind of downright bad and crazy, at least the author did their best to create a character this wonderful. They acted like a mother when creating the character design of their baby1 and acted like a stepmother when creating the story’s plot line.

Gu Xi only heard the beginning of Rong Jing’s thoughts [This–]. After that, he heard a lot of beeping noise. What did he say next?

Gu Xi wondered for a moment what Rong Jing was thinking about but felt down when he couldn’t hear more. He knew that he wouldn’t be able to hear anything. He didn’t think much about it before, but now it was bothering him not being able to hear someone’s thoughts.

Rong Jing thought of the original situation in the novel that could have happened now. Seeing these kinds of photos of Gu Xi lying around, he couldn’t help but find Gu Xi unlucky, “Don’t trust any Alphas. There aren’t many good things about them.”

Gu Xi asked meekly, “Does that include you?”

Rong Jing touched his nose awkwardly. It does include me…does it?

The corners of Gu Xi’s lips raised slightly, “I know.” I know better than anyone.

That was the first genuine smile that he had seen from Gu Xi today. Only then did Rong Jing learn that there was actually a big difference between a fake smile and a real smile.

Rong Jing: “We could give these photos to the police as evidence but…” It wouldn’t be good for Gu Xi.

There was only a small probability of the suspect being traced. They were being so cautious and only gave a note with type-written words. They also probably wouldn’t be able to find any fingerprints on the photos. Moreover, the situation harmed no one. There isn’t enough reason for the police to find the suspect and take the case seriously.

As for the photos, whether they are really connected to Gu Xi or not, they must not be made public. It would only hurt him in the end. The Gu Xi in the book wouldn’t be so desperate otherwise.

The suspect knew too well that as long as Gu Xi wanted to have a peaceful life, he would do anything to not let these explicit photos be released to the public. Everything was perfectly planned.

“You can’t give it to them,” Gu Xi looked at Rong Jing, his eyes pleading. If the person behind this incident was afraid of the police, they wouldn’t be this courageous and bold to do something like this! He had tried various methods to have all the people who harassed him be put to jail but they were all like mayflies shaking trees and managed to get away. He’s the one who suffers in the end.

“Then at least let me handle this?” Rong Jing never asked Gu Xi where the photos came from. Wherever they came from, the person who made them is sickening.

“Okay.”

Gu Xi didn’t know how to explain that he hadn’t seduced anyone. He and Rong Jing were acquaintances at best. There wasn’t much that he could say to him. He was very grateful that Rong Jing didn’t find him disgusting. A lot of people would have if they saw the photos. Since he’s an Omega, they would think that doing something like this is possible even for him. Once an Omega’s reputation is stained, it would become so easy for them to be condemned to the cruelest of fates.

Rong Jing took out a lighter he had with him. The original owner had the habit of smoking but Rong Jing wanted to quit. Holding the lighter was merely for fun, he was trying to stop the original owner’s addiction.

He took a pot of roses, poured out the soil and put the photos on the ground then lit them on fire together.

Rong Jing felt a sense of pleasure of burning off evil as he watched the flames jump. He also felt some affection and empathy towards the protagonist of the story, probably because they had met and had been in contact.

The smell of the photo paper burning spread. The two men watched quietly. The breeze blew, the red petals danced in the air mixed with ash and circled around them.
