''Let me be clear, Harriet Potter,'' Adam spoke seriously, they had now gone into her dorm room, raising his fancy wand as he circled the tip of the wand around his hand. Using a minor image conjuration to show the crest of the Mortem house.
''My house is dead, me being its last member... Similar to your own circumstances. In return for me helping you in the magical world, providing the strength and assistance I can, you will help me raise my family back to its proper place within the world, and raise it back to its former status and glory.''
''How... How can I help you with that? My family is also gone...''
Adam reached out a hand, offering it to her. ''Be my friend, it's that simple. I shall go on your adventures, I shall aid you, I shall be a shoulder you can lean on. Let me be a genuine friend to you, and my house will naturally begin to generate fame. Do that for me, and I will help you raise your house back to power once more as well.''
Harriet sat on one of the chairs inside the room, Adam sitting on an opposite chair that was across a small tea table.
''So you're saying... All we have to do is be friends, and our families will grow strong again?'' Harriet asked, confusion evident.
Adam chuckled softly, shaking his head. ''That is not all we will have to do. Most likely fight a few dark lords, maybe even a few dragons... Maybe even Death himself, but we'll come out each time stronger, with more fame to our names, money in our vaults, and people wanting to shoulder our family to the light once more... But it'd be better to do all of it with a friend, someone I can trust.''
Once more, he stuck out his hand. Harriet seemed hesitant at first but slowly reached forward, before she shook his hand.
Gripping the hand with a firm shake, his hand tightened around it as he suddenly locked her there, speaking plainly. ''The first rule of our goals, you'll never speak to anyone about what happens between us, unless we specifically say it is alright, understood? To make sure none of the information even leaks out, I am giving you this... A show of friendship.''
Adam released her hand and pulled his bag around, pulling out a large tome before setting it onto Harriet's lap with a soft thud. The book overtook her lap.
''Magic... of the mind?'' Harriet asked as she read the title, opening it slowly.
''A way to protect your mind, and to be able to counter attacks. There are more... ruthless ways to learn how to defend the mind, but this offers time to study, and it will expand your mind as a whole, it will help you control your emotions and memories, while also clearing your mind of the clutter, leading you to be able to think faster, react faster to stimulation, and to remember better. It is old and powerful magic. Study it, cover to cover for now. Read it as many times as you need until you feel you could speak its contents out loud without looking at it. Then come to me and we will begin to train you in it.''
''People can read minds?'' Harriet asked, baffled by the idea.
''It's a world of magic Harriet, this is one of the few aspects that magic can achieve,'' Adam stated, nodding softly as he went back to reach into his bag.

''And what of now... Has anyone read my mind yet, how can I tell?'' Harriet began to fire off questions, genuinely worried someone has already attempted to attack her mind... Has it already been attacked?
''For now, I am going to give you a 'Vassle' ring, that can only be worn by friends to the Mortem house... Think of it as a shield that will protect your mind, and warn you when someone is trying to enter it. When you feel it tighten around your finger, break eye contact with whoever you were looking at, close your eyes if you need to.'' Adam didn't mention the fact it would also warn him if she was in danger, he only had three of these rings, each of them doing something else.
But all would warn him if the person wearing it was in danger.
Offering the ring to Harriet, she slowly slid it onto her index finger, it tightening around her finger to accommodate her small fingers. As Adam stood up, slinging his backpack over his shoulder he spoke once more. ''The second, is we will need to check you over, your far too small for someone your age, genes or not. There is also signs of heavy abuse, malnutrition, and starvation. For now, we will focus on getting you accustomed to the wizarding world. Making it so you can defend yourself, and healing you, or at least bringing you to what the best you can be.''
Harriet nodded, lifting the large and heavy book with both arms as she hugged it to her chest. ''What time is it? So I know how long before I need to go to sleep.''
Pulling his robe up to look at 'his' watch he saw it was just after 8:30. ''8:31, I recommend you be washed and in bed by 10:25.''
''Wait... That watch, you didn't have it at dinner?'' Harriet asked, watching the fancy watch... Why'd it seemed familiar?
''I stole it from Malfoy, I plan to sell it within the hour, as of right now I am, incredibly poor. Even the few hundred galleons from this will make it a huge benefit to me.''
''You... You stole from someone?'' Harriet asked, not in an accusing manner, just confirming what he said.
''I've had to steal to eat before and will do so again... I am not above stealing, nor am I above murder or fighting tooth and nail for what I need. But I have my own morals. The Malfoy's are... 'Filthy' rich, I steal this watch, and Malfoy's monthly allowance is capable of covering for two more if he wanted.''
Harriet nodded as Adam left her room, making sure the door was locked when he left so she didn't need to.
Harriet didn't feel anything from him admitting that... She wasn't above stealing herself, she actually got pretty decent at it, all to keep herself from starving to death.
