Fu Zheng had in fact thought of many distinct ways this could go after they exchanged secrets, but all of them had included Ning Wan's anger. It was just that in each scenario, how angry she was differed. However, things had gone in a direction he had never even thought of - Ning Wan didn't seem to mind at all and had very generously forgiven his deception.

And even encouraged him to be true to himself?

Fu Zheng's heart was full of indescribable joy. It was true that he really was a workaholic, that he indeed had that young master's temper she had once scoffed at, and sometimes he was even picky, but Ning Wan had actually told him to be himself. Not only had she accepted his advantages, but also his shortcomings.

"In the future, remember to ask me to accompany you when you go out at night. I'll buy you a small flashlight with a keychain that you can hang on your keys. And remember, you'll always have me, so if you're wronged, don't take it to heart. You can cry if you want to..."

Fu Zheng was genuinely touched. He hadn't expected Ning Wan to take his deception so well, and even accept everything about him. Because he was so excited, he overlooked her rather queer series of cares, and gazed at Ning Wan gently. After all, when he really thought about it, Fu Zheng knew what she meant when she said those words. Although he was a fully grown, independent senior partner, wasn't he still a little baby to be treasured in Ning Wan's eyes?

What man, even one so mature and successful as himself, wouldn't encounter unreasonable customers and terrible things while working and out in society? Ning Wan wanted not only his strong side, but was also willing to accept him at his most frustrated.

The more Fu Zheng thought about it, the more he felt like he had really lucked out to have Ning Wan as his girlfriend.

Ning Wan watched Fu Zheng's expression change from nervous to stunned, and finally to moved, and felt quite emotional as well. This poor man really didn't have it easy. The world set such excessively rigid gender roles for men and women, as if everything should be 'men out in the workplace and women in the home', but everyone was different. Some boys liked to take care of their families more than going out to work, and there were girls who wished to participate in the cutthroat world of workplace competition.

When she put some thought into it, Fu Zheng was 30 years old, and he had just missed the selection for the senior partner's team. Even though his academic qualifications weren't bad and he had gotten into a big law firm like Zhengyuan for his first job, his future was still going to be very difficult. On top of that, his true personality was a crybaby. In the future, Ning Wan felt, she would definitely have to be the one raising him. She would be in charge of making money and supporting the family, and Fu Zheng would be responsible for being as beautiful as a flower. And what's wrong with that?

Once his secret had been understood and accepted by Ning Wan, Fu Zheng seemed to relax and seemed to finally make up his mind to tease her about her secret. He snaked his hand about her waist and said, "So, I'm your first boyfriend?"

Ning Wan glared at him, fierce outside but soft inside. "What are you trying to imply? Have you had many ex-girlfriends?"

"No."

"No?"

Fu Zheng's answer gave Ning Wan quite a shock. He looked like this, had gone to study abroad young, and he was 30 years old now. To have an ex-girlfriend or two was normal, and she was ready to accept it so long as he hadn't had a whole string of them, yet unexpectedly... there hadn't been any?

"You're not lying to me? Don't you international students like to party it up? Going to bars and things?"

Fu Zheng laughed. "You're stereotyping international students. We do go to some parties for fun or to fit in, or maybe we might be curious and go to a bar, but it isn't as easy as you think. Asians are a minority in school and it isn't easy to find someone who's right for you when there's not that many of us to begin with. Many international students study abroad for many years and remain single the whole time, and they envy those domestic male college students."

Saying so, he lowered his head and gently kissed the tip of Ning Wan's ear. "When my friends and I vented to each other about being envious of domestic male college students, I never actually felt anything, but now I really am envious, even jealous."

Embarrassed to be kissed, Ning Wan felt her ears redden. Even her face changed colour.

Fu Zheng hadn't had enough. He lowered his voice, "I especially envy the boys from your school."

"Not only at your college, but your high school, too."

"Like Chen Shuo, for example."

"Domestic male college students are so lucky. So many beautiful girls of the same age, no language barrier that forces them to work harder. Isn't being at university at home much easier than if you were an international student? You could even have a college romance."

When Fu Zheng said this, he really did sound a little envious. "Not only that, but there are all the various Chinese cuisines, unlike us poor international students who have PTSD from all those strange-tasting so-called Chinese foods abroad, to the point of having to get used to western food instead."

"Law school in the United States is stressful and high-pressure. It's not easy at all, and there's no time for dating."

Upon hearing that Fu Zheng had never had a girlfriend before, Ning Wan couldn't help but be secretly pleased. But when she heard this, she said a little unhappily, "What's with that regretful tone?"

"No regrets." Fu Zheng smiled. Lowering his voice, he breathed, "Who cares about the people who were in high school or college with you? I'm the very last one to be your boyfriend, so there's nothing to regret."

After saying so, he glanced at Ning Wan, and then looked away uneasily. Though his voice was still calm, it sounded a little shy, "Since it's the first time for both of us being in a relationship, let's grope forward together. If there's something I'm not doing well enough, just say something, and I'll change it."

He said this in such a way that Ning Wan took his hand. "I got it." She thought for a moment, then added, "Since it's our first time, if I do something wrong or make you sad, don't hold back either..."

Fu Zheng was a crybaby, and on top of that seemed to be quite jealous. Ning Wan felt like she would have to protect his boyish heart well in the future.

That day, the two who had exchanged secrets held hands the whole time. Like all ordinary couples in amusement parks, they created many mutual firsts in each other's lives: the first time going into an "Adventure Cave", where they secretly kissed behind the backs of the rest of the team; together on the couples rafting ride, where the people on the opposite raft got their hair wet; lining up side by side for the super-super-popular crispy chicken drumsticks; and sharing a matcha ice cream together, with a kiss after every few bites...

After all these years, it was Ning Wan's first time completely forgetting her dignity, forgetting all the pressures, the endless maybes and regrets of reality, and immersing herself only in the sweet.

Here, she didn't need to be a nervous lawyer who was always on call. She didn't need to worry about community work, about how to be more competitive in her career, about her future career path. She could simply be Ning Wan.

How wonderful Fu Zheng was. It seemed that with him, she finally had a safe haven to occasionally escape from the pressures of reality. Although he claimed to be a crybaby with a fragile heart, for some unknown reason Ning Wan felt at ease around him. He felt very steady and reliable just by virtue of being there.

At ten o'clock that evening, Ning Wan pulled Fu Zheng by the hand toward the amusement park's final show - fireworks.

Coincidentally, it was the 100th day opening anniversary of this amusement park for lovers, so they were lucky enough to catch the fireworks show.

But after all, it was merely a small-scale, low-altitude show, and a theme park didn't have too many places suitable for watching fireworks. By the time they arrived, all the good spots were already taken.

It would be false to say that she wasn't disappointed, but not wanting to bring down Fu Zheng's mood, Ning Wan smiled and said words of reassurance.

Unexpectedly, however, when the fireworks really began to bloom and Ning Wan was standing on tiptoe to try and see them over the heads of the people in front, Fu Zheng crouched down gently, embraced her from behind and lifted her up as though she were a child.

His movement was steady and sure, even easy. Lifted up like this, Ning Wan didn't feel at all as if Fu Zheng was shaking or strained. His actions were careful, and she felt no discomfort, only that her field of vision had suddenly widened, and that finally there was no one before her blocking her view of the fireworks.

Gorgeous, beautiful and ever-changing, they blossomed before Ning Wan's eyes.

But because she was being held up by Fu Zheng, although she could see the fireworks, Fu Zheng's line of sight was completely blocked. All he could see was her back.

So although it was excellent, midway through the show Ning Wan broke free and said, "Fu Zheng, you should watch too."

But Fu Zheng seemed unconcerned. "I'm older than you are, and I've seen plenty of fireworks. I don't mind missing one show. So long as you can watch them, it's enough for me to watch you."

Fortunately, the sound of the fireworks going off and the surrounding voices masked Ning Wan's heartbeat, or she would have suspected that it was beating loud enough for everyone to hear.

The culprit didn't seem to notice, and extended his arm to her. "Come on, let me give you a lift."

Fu Zheng was very courteous. Although he was holding her in his embrace, his hands did not attempt to roam. He was as innocent and restrained as if he were really holding a child, and careful enough to allow one to put their trust in him.

Thanks to her father, Ning Wan had no memories of ever being hugged and kissed and lifted up high like other children were. However, at this moment, being held up by Fu Zheng and watching the gorgeous fireworks before her, she suddenly felt reconciled with her own past.

It seemed that there was no longer anything to regret and resent, that all the hatreds and resentments of her childhood could be put to rest.

Sometimes, life will take things away from you, but as long as you faced forward earnestly, these things would always come back to you in a different form.

It wasn't some high-end amusement park or expensive fireworks, and nor was it the presence of a rich boyfriend. But this plain and true happiness gave Ning Wan the surest peace of mind.

Although she had only ever heard that wishing upon a falling star would be effective, and there was no such saying as wishing upon a firework, Ning Wan stubbornly felt like fireworks and falling stars were essentially no different. They were both ephemeral and beautiful, and so there was absolutely nothing wrong with replacing a falling star with fireworks.

Her face flushing slightly with excitement and nervousness, the light of the fireworks reflected in her eyes, she quietly made her wish--

May this moment never end.
