Intermission 3 years since the end of book 1...
Work zone in the marsh
A large metal tower stood over 300 feet tall and 40 feet wide. It was a giant round building covered in various patches of metal. This building's purpose was to refine crude oil. This was the beginning of the entire plant, from here it would just be connected to more and more different structures to aid in refining the oil. Rex would also create a cracking plant to produce plastics as a part of the process.
Cheers and some tears were coming from the gathered workers. Over the three years Rex had continued his policy, he would only take those who wanted to work. The project began as just a man and a beaverman, and it continued to grow. Now they had over 50 people working, a whole quarter of the island. Most of these people were paving the entire area in concrete.
The bulk of these were beastmen workers, they were all here because of Borscht. Who could have guessed that the big white bear would keep getting fatter? Every day he would fight monsters and gather more meat. He could hold his breath for almost half an hour, so he could fight for a long time. All of this meat had caused his furry white friend to get greasy. This forced Rex to develop shampoo and conditioner. The chemicals could be found in seaweed, and the bear already did lots of swimming.
Right now Rex was laying atop this bear. Walking on all fours, his back was almost the size of a twin bed, and he was even more fluffy. Not only did Rex not grow out of this habit, but it was becoming worse. With the advent of hair care products, he was now starting to eye the rest of the beastmen. Looking at the beautiful white creature under him, he wanted more of them!
Not for fighting, just for petting!
Things were getting bad for Rex and friends, the elves had changed to a paper currency. This was severely limiting Rex on getting silver and copper. Rex had briefly considered using brass ammo, but now that wasn't possible. They would be forced into this strange technology development path they were on. They would have an oil refinery before the first steam engine.
I can't find any reason to build that relic!
Looking over his shoulder he saw a makeshift crane they built to raise steel plates. Most of these long-armed structures would use a winch and a counterweight. A large plate to act as the roof to cap it off was attached to a steel chain by an elf, the elf then proceeded to just grab the chain and stand on the plate. It had an A-frame supporting the long arm. On the other end of the crane attached to the base of it was a large steel plate that looked like a ramp. This ramp had a ladder pattern attached to the floor. The ramp ran on for over a few hundred feet with this pattern on it.
12 large and very buff dog beast-men all stood in a variety of breeds. You had Dobermans, Pitbulls, and even a pug. They all wore thick vests with a smaller chain attached that ran to the larger chain in the center. They looked like a mutated dog sledding team. All 12 got into the position of a track athlete about to take off for a sprint, but what they did next was very different.
They did not sprint though, so much as crawl using the ladder on the floor. They did this at a super-fast speed, causing the plate and the elf to shoot up to the top of the crane. Rex didn't want to solely rely on the succubi, as he wanted to train more workers. This had lead to the development of this crane, it would be taken down when they were done.
The succubi all competed and learned from each other, why would Rex want to stop that by making them do things they already knew. It didn't matter what they made, as long as they did it they were honing their skills. The dwarves wanted Rex to free more of their brethren and they were providing more ore, Rex had easily agreed. This had made Rex realize the serious problem he created for himself. It was almost impossible to get slaves from the elves using the same tactic, he burned every bridge.
Rex and Kira didn't even have to say anything about the cruise ship, Dryfys immediately blamed the beastmen and swore bloody retribution. They also massively increased their naval protection, this meant they could not repeat the same strategy as easily to get a ship from the elves. Rex didn't want to have to figure out some way to build ships out of plastic, as he certainly didn't have the steel, or tools at the moment. Everything was being poured into this project in the marsh, it was too important.
They would be tied up for years at this rate, but the beastmen were so much harder to infiltrate. The succubi couldn't get any position of value as a female that was safe enough to be worth it. Rex was forced to value their safety above all else. They reproduced too slowly after all.
Looking over at the table and sunshade that Kira set up for herself, he looked to her new helper. Her name was Shaya, and she was the newest succubus. She was of the same white complexion as Kira and had the same dark hair and orange irises. Her hair was much shorter, and she seemed to want to keep it that way. She wouldn't talk to Rex and just followed Kira around constantly. This was Dora's daughter after all, and where is the mother you might wonder? Gone...
Kera had taken over Dora's position while Dora had her kid, not even Kera expected Dora to recover in a few days and get bored just being around the succubus homeland all day. Rex was not allowed to watch the birth process, he was fascinated to see just how this happened! This was what looked like a young girl, she was like that when she came out of the room. Kira told Rex she wanted it to be a surprise! This thought drove terror into his young mind, he was only 12 at this point.
“Now that shiny tower done, what next?” Borscht asked with curiosity as he walked around with Rex on his back.
Rex had to think of how to explain things to this bear, he was the true leader of the beastmen. Most of the dog races were prolific and followed the strongest, sadly used to be the pug. That pug was a tough little beastman, and easily one of the most fierce. Borscht beat his pug ass when he tried to start shit with him though. Looking over at the dogs who finished moving the steel plate they all stood as a group and walked the chain back to the base of the platform.
“We need to build a lot more buildings that will be similar to this tower, but simpler. Everything will be connected with pipes, it is going to be a lot of work figuring everything out.” Rex sighed as he imagined it in his head.
“What is the point?” Borscht asked trying to understand.
“The elves have magic, and we just don't they also have much greater numbers than us. The elves consider anything, not an elf as beneath them. If they found this island we would all be enslaved by them and forced to toil away, you know all about this.” Rex began his explanation. “The beastmen to a degree are almost worse, but not in the same way. If you are strong you can do whatever you want, but the weak are just meat. They don't appreciate what people like me do.
“This means I can only fight against them, out of all of the races I met, only a little succubus saw any worth in what I do. This made my choice of stance fairly easy. I will use chemicals to counter magic, with guns to counter strength, and explosives to deal with sheer numbers. That is what this place will ultimately be used for, this place will produce death.”
Rex saw no value in fuel, save for warfare. This world had magic and enchanting, and this seemed much more versatile without electricity. Rex ultimately wanted to fuse these two sciences and create an entirely new field. Rex felt like this was the true path to the future in this world, he wanted to create something better than humanity had. This is why he needed a skilled workforce, and it would be a labor of love.
Right now he was always behind, this was because he was alone in the past. He wanted to do everything himself, this was not the correct way to do things in this world. The issue was that he didn't want to be a king or some evil dictator. If he managed to build such a civilization, why would he set it up in a way that would fail after he died? The only way he could make this something that lasted was if the people themselves saw the true value in it.
Value in this world meant ensuring you could protect yourself, Rex was well aware of this fact. The number of times he had almost died since he came here caused him to go numb to it. Now he had to force himself to care, or Kira would dive in head first after him. This was something he was assured of.
“Hehe! Everybody loves fighting so much!” The bear laughed happily.
Looking at the large white bear he was riding, then around at a future chemical, weapons, and plastics factory, a thought went through Rex's mind.
They might love fighting now, but they probably won't for very long.
Gaskets, seals, lubricants, and so much more. Once he had these, it was certain that the technological gap would be like astronauts versus cavemen.
“World war two technology is dog shit compared to what we had in the modern-day.” Rex muttered to himself as he thought of this crude refinery he was building.
The bear looked at the boy shocked by this comment, he couldn't imagine a war that involved an entire world, and he said two of them were dog shit? Borscht looked at the pug he had beaten up a year ago, that pug desperately wanted his training. Borscht had seen the piles of shit that pug laid, they were quite impressive. Borscht was trying to figure out how that could be compared to a world war.
Looking over at the other table with a female elven occupant, he sighed again. The elf had gotten her reading glasses, then immediately proceeded to learn English. Rex could only write in it, after all, he was prevented from being able to learn another language, it all came back as English in his eyes. This was a serious problem, as this meant he had to teach English.
I am an engineer, not a writer!
Technical documentation had to be precise, this meant its context must not change in the slightest. This means the technician has to write it. Rex had less than an associate's in English, and this was with a Master's in Industrial Engineering with a minor in Chemical Engineering. This meant commas or above didn't exist in their English, and there was only one form of words like where, where, and to. This wasn't because Rex didn't want them, but he didn't know how to use them.
It is so ironic that they are treating it as the language of scholars!
Welch was reading a book Rex wrote on engineering principles. In his free time at night, he wrote everything he knew down. Welch liked firearms, and she wanted to make her own. The books were mostly for Kira, but this had started turning into more than that.

This was to comb over everything in his brain and re-imagine what would become possible here. The more time he spent here, the greedier he got. Why should he be happy with just modern life? This had also started the more he experimented with mana and saw its possibilities. Materials were the one thing that most commonly held humans back, but he had an entire world full of new ones to explore.
Rex had noticed now that they were finished for the day, the prisoners were getting a little too touchy with each other for his liking. Workplace relationships shouldn't be shown! This was because the island was still devoid of women, except for the mountaintop. After three years the younger slaves had begun to accept quite progressive views on sexuality.
Soon they will begin breaking the borders separating races!
This was a part of his society he was horrified to see coming back, soon they would claim they have established their form of philosophy! This had hastened Rex's plans to finish the refinery, steal another ship, and integrate women onto the island. If he couldn't do it soon, then it might be too late.
The women haven't had as many problems because of the succubi. They might start getting closer too...
Rex was horrified he would create an island with 2 cities, Yaoi, and Yuri. The worst part was that they sounded like island names. Rex had already heard of groups like the Elven Exploratory Enclave, or the EEE as it was called. There was also the Beast Boys as they called themselves, they were another group. This was all made possible due to a slave figuring out you can boil down seaweed to make a type of lotion. This was soon told to everyone, this lead to an abundance of seaweed.
“Kira, can you get the sisters so we can go home?” Rex called out to Kira who was going over enchanting with Shaya.
Kira wanted to start teaching her early, the two were very close. Rex could see the little girl being Kira's first little helper in the future. The first of many succubi dedicated to the craft of creating bigger, stronger, magical weapons. Rex was certain this is all the future succubi would use it for. From what Kira had to say; Dora's pregnancy had begun to give her some ideas on a path to take, but she would need more research to complete it. Then succubi might have a non-fatal way to breed, this would be huge for them as a species.
“Shaya?” Kira asked the other little girl with a smile.
Shaya nodded her head with a serious expression before her wings popped out. Shaya took to the sky quickly albeit a bit clumsy compared to her older sisters. Rex assumed she would get better at flying over time, she only felt comfortable trying it a few months ago. It was adorable watching the sisters have to keep the little girl from crashing into the ground. Shaya had quite the odd personality, being determined to succeed once she tried something.
“Do we have a way to heat this giant tower yet?” Rex said as he pointed to the fractional distill.
If they constantly burned fuel here to heat the gas then the smoke would soon smog up their homes. No one liked the pollution that was in your face, then you had to pay attention to it. Looking over at the marsh where the vine monster lived, a smile crossed Rex's face. This was a smile caused by the three small succubi houses filled with waste chemicals.
When purifying and extracting chemicals you often get all kinds of different things mixed in. These can be incredibly hard to determine, as the sources they were gathered were littered with all kinds of different minerals. These can include salts that contain heavy metals like zinc, copper, cadmium, mercury, and many others. There are also various peroxides and unreacted acids.
In the mid-1850s, a man was able to create one of the first synthetic chemicals. It was a dye extracted from coal tar called aniline purple. Synthetics were always better than the organic versions. Take fluoroantimonic acid as an example, it was an incredible discovery. It still isn't even fully understood, as we had no material that was clear enough to look at it through a microscope before the acid had begun dissolving it, ruining the image. That is because it is ten million billion times stronger than pure sulfuric acid.
Super acids have a use when it comes to oil, in the presence of superacids you can make special bonds in the oil that can be used in stronger plastics and better fuels. This had led him to begin creating synthetic chemicals, and these were always very dirty. Coal is filled with cancerous compounds, and he had made quite a bit of dye for the succubi. Rex was beginning to think it might be a good idea to bury the swamp in concrete after the monster was dead.
From Kira and Borscht had told him it is very possibly a high-level monster. Kira and Rex mentioned it a few times, but it was such a magical concept Rex had no clue how to understand it.
Whatever, it is strong, as long as it is alive I am sure I can kill it.
Rex had also noticed he began to sweat when he was dealing with toxic chemicals now, it made him feel sticky and uncomfortable when he was in his lab for long hours. This had made Rex decide that he needed to make some form of air conditioning in his lab.
Hearing the flapping of wings he looked up to see his ride back home.

Rex began to unhook the harness that he used when he was being flown around, it just had one problem. Digging the strap that ran between his legs out of his ass, he tossed the harness on the ground. Looking around from the center of town he took a few moments to take it in.
Glass windows were common, and most of the old succubus sheds had been replaced, only a few were still left for storage purposes. The buildings now came in a variety of shapes and sizes as they got more creative with the materials. Concrete had replaced the old clay, and various paints were slowly being introduced. Purple, red, and black seemed to be the general theme around the overall village. It was hard to call it anything because it was so spread out, for no reason that Rex could determine.
Since they could all fly, they didn't care, and most of the females were beastmen, with a single exception being the scorpion woman. Textiles, dyes, and weapons were the main production of the succubi, followed closely by soap. These production lines had slowly grown, they weren't making guns at the moment as they were waiting for the refinery to finish being created, but cold weapons were still being sold in small amounts on the elven market.
This is because the war was in a very odd state, it was in a total deadlock. The beastmen had started with an advantage, but the elves were incredibly persistent, over time they managed to even things out. Rex wanted things to stay this way, as long as possible. This would give him the maximum amount of time to develop the island.
Rex began walking to the house he shared with Kira and kept looking around as he went.
The succubi had treated him better with Kira's rise, and the things he kept making. They didn't treat him as coldly anymore, but he still had problems talking to them. This was because Rex was finding himself approaching an age that made it hard to look at their bulging chests and nice curves. Rex had wondered when his body decided it wanted to be suicidal, but he realized he was getting to that age again.
These next few years would be a grueling challenge to test his determination. He would be like a monk battling his worldly desires to achieve Nirvana!

Inside Rex's body
“How are the “Victims” performing?” The purple-clothed man asked an old man in purple.
The old man looked at the new leader of the race, then over at the monitor on his desk. On it, one of the black viscous creatures was shown bound in chains. It was a square room with nothing but a bunch of the purple-clothed people in it. They approached the black creature and raised their hands releasing a purple light.
The black creature began to bubble and pop and hiss violently as the liquid on its surface began to boil. This char began to build up and form an armor, and soon one of the large power-armored black-suited individuals formed from the char.
Its red visor was striking as was the V on its helmet. A new “Victim” was born of the mold's ability to take over existing microorganisms.
“State your name!” One of the purple-robed men demanded of the black power-armored creature.
“Botulism...” The creature responded with a mechanical voice through the thick armor.
A sound of raspy mechanical breathing could be heard from the armor. It was like the occupant was slowly suffocating.
