Chapter 34: The Early Years – Recap

Reginald Otem III was an Engineer working for a military contracted arms manufacturer. On his way home from work, he was directed by his wife to get food from a diner. Rex had been poisoned and was dying in the parking lot in the diner when a foreign operative stole the blueprints he carried for the next-generation weapons. He passed away in the parking lot of that diner in his car shortly after.

 

After dying, Rex found himself in a cave on an island filled with prisoners. These prisoners carried a branding from the demons to denote their status, but Rex did not have this same marking on his 8-year-old body. The island was controlled by a race of creatures called the succubi.

 

They fed on the life force in creatures through the act of intercourse or kissing. This would leave the victim to turn into ashes after they were done. Rex had seen this exact process when he was trying to get water to boil. The young succubus Kira had also begun following him. Rex was the youngest on the island, and this made him very appealing.

 

Rex woke up in a panic when he saw the young man-eater in his cave and had given her a pot he made to get her to leave. He found himself surrounded by prisoners though, they were destroying his camp while he hid underground. They were soon killed by the succubi that Kira had brought back with her. Then this led to Rex being taken to the succubi homeland to teach her pottery.

 

The two formed a very close friendship as they were left on the mountain alone. The top of the volcano was very steep, and Rex had no way down from the village. They made all kinds of products in Rex's pursuit of an easier life. These included cast metal products, paper, soap, and various chemicals. Rex also began to search for the antibiotic penicillin and discovered a light blue mold that had similar properties.

 

During this time Rex began secretly producing a gun and other tools to escape the island. This was brought to a halt as Kira's mother Kera, brought bad news to the island. The demons had abandoned the port that they used to supply the island to the beastmen, and they were cut off. The succubi were angry about this and decided to defend their homeland.

 

Rex having used all their ore, and other resources were seen as an unstable factor, and they wanted to remove him. Kira began to realize her feelings were much stronger than she imagined, and she made a startling choice. She chose to challenge her mother for the rule of the race. Kera being a bad leader, but a good mother could only support her daughter. This was because if she didn't accept the challenge, by the rules of the succubi Kira would be exiled from the clan.

 

It was added later to the rules the great ancestor had left behind for her descendants, it was to keep the succubi who just weren't qualified from even trying. Kera had long thought of it as suppressive to her race, but her attempts at changing things had failed over the years.

 

Kira used her accomplishments with the exchange in her short time running it, and the tools and items she produced as the foundation of her rule. Rex had to kiss Kira, and he had done so arrogantly thinking an enchantment he made would save him. He nearly died from it, and his gun with a single shot was used as a demonstration of the future weapons he would make them.

 

Rex experienced a crushing amount of defeat at this moment, and began to crack under all the pressure he found himself under. Throwing the failed enchanted device he created into a pool of water and began pointlessly digging. While the plate couldn't return his lost vitality, it allowed the extraction of energy that was in the mountain.

 

The High Elves were driven to extinction over an enchanted weapon they created that could fully absorb all of the life in an area. It was a large dark iron chain that was several miles long. It had been melted down in the volcano that was once here, and the energy was trapped in the mountain in the metal particles.

 

Now Rex and Kira had to win over the succubi. He immediately launched a plan to create a massive war between the beastmen and elves. Initially, he wanted to use public pressure to do this, but he got really lucky. Ivangor was a freak among the elves who normally obsessed over the magic of the High Elves.

 

He loved physical combat over anything else, and weapons always held a soft spot in his heart. Most metals could not endure the force of his power, so he collected them for workmanship. The sword he wore at his hip was ornamental, in his mind at least. These perfect blades with no imperfections spoke deeply to the elven warrior, and the fake story of the smith being killed by beastmen upset the Elven King.

 

This gave him a great excuse to stretch his muscles, and he happily led his armies to burn down Savage City that was lead by a Beast King, the hyenaman Fourpaw. Ivangor chased him to Fang City that was lead by the Tiger King, Lior. Fourpaw demanded to have the alchemists create a mixture to burn the elf's forest down.

 

Rex had no idea of this as he had discovered an incredible substance called mana. Using acids and solvents to break down magic stones, he was able to trap this substance in its water content. Then he began trying to move it into other materials to see what would happen. A runaway reaction occurred from the over-saturation of mana, and the properties of the materials became highly unstable and dangerous.

 

This clear gel would burn in the presence of oxygen at very high temperatures, it could strip the bonds in water through a chemical process and burn the released hydrogen and oxygen as fuel, causing it to explode and burn rapidly. High enough temperatures would also allow the gel to reach a limited thermite reaction with the trapped metals and oxides in the gel.

 

It was a horrifying chemical that he had no idea how to get rid of with his limited tools at the time. He had buried the gel under ethanol to cut off its flow of oxygen, but it was evaporating rapidly. Rex was horrified he had created something that would wipe out the island, but Kira was able to handle the gel and scoop it into sealed glass orbs. Using a reaction he had flooded the room with gas to push the oxygen out. This allowed the chemical to be removed from the giant clay vat he made to store it.

 

This gel would be dubbed as “The Great Weapon of the Succubi” and was dropped right in the elven forest.

 

Everyone laughed at this seemingly innocent-looking little fire and the thick greasy substance under it. This quickly changed when the elves got the bright idea to pour some rain on it. The chemical weapon unleashed its full fury, as it caused a massive explosion that sent the gel everywhere. The elven army was nearly wiped out from the heatwave released from it.

 

The substance was madly reacting in any way it could to release the sheer amount of mana that Rex had forced into it. It burned for several days before the gel finally burnt out. It had barely reduced in mass until all of the mana had been used. It burned over a quarter of the massive forest the elves lived in, and several cities and towns were destroyed.

 

Rex felt conflicted about this. While he had created it, he never said to use it on the elves. Being a weapons manufacturer meant that he was already stained from his work. This mistake was his first real inroad with the succubi as an outsider. The succubi cared about very little, but weapons were one of those things. This lead to the succubi beginning to produce things for themselves.

This newfound pride caused the succubi to establish a calendar and records to chronicle their achievements. Using information that came from Rex; it was dubbed as AS, or anno succubi, in the year of the succubus.

 

Rex began trying to get the island under control from the prisoners, but everything had failed. The mines were a fortress and he had no way to breach it with only succubi. Rex was against using a forceful approach regardless, it would be pointless for his plans. He tried winning the prisoners over by using a representative, but he found no success.

 

Around this time a startling change happened in the elven lands. Three of the elven kings and queen had infiltrated the elven capital and felled the “divine tree” of the elves. This tree could produce a special fruit that allowed the person who ate it to gain an extra hundred years of life. They were unable to leave the forest after though, or they would hemorrhage life force and die. Dryfys rose and became the High King and began to implement changes in the elves.

 

The succubi were unable to infiltrate the elven capital building, and information from the top was hard to get. Dryfys removed almost every female from every position within his keep. He then announced that the elves were going to completely take over the beastmen, then the continent.

 

The new workforce was planned to be freed slaves, and Rex thought this would be so much easier. They infiltrated the elves and started buying slaves to bring them to the island. This was done by Dora, but during an auction, she was approached about rescuing a young Welch. Dora felt this was entirely too troublesome, later she was sold as a slave at the price of a borax mine. Dora was very pleased with the profit she gained from this slave. She felt like she had easily earned succubus of the month for this contribution.

 

The elves were also baffled at how her attitude completely changed with a simple change of wording. Welch was thus flown out of the city using the succubus express. A polar bear beastman named “Bear” at the time was also purchased. This would later become his friend Borscht.

 

During this time Rex and Kira had ventured into the marsh in the north. They discovered a large pool at the center of the marsh that seemed to be sucking the life out of the area. Kira could see nothing in the water, but Rex felt his curiosity only spike at this. Wandering into the water lead him to be attacked by a monster that was hiding in the waters.

 

It consisted of many different vines and attempted to drag Rex into the center of it. Kira had immediately sprung into action and was attacked much heavier. Rex seeing this discrepancy, realized a problem and discovered it was only attracted to mana. Discarding the enchanted gun he carried freed him. Kira seeing him safe, finally calmed down and retreated.

 

Rex contracted severe sepsis from his wounds and began to hallucinate. Seeing the two sides of himself, helped reconcile his feelings, but hallucinating was never good when you were making antibiotics.

 

Rex failed to make the antibiotics, and instead ingested a mutated form of the original mold that survived all the solvents. Closing his eyes he went to sleep and was awoken when the vial he made started shaking and rolling around. Inside was a liquid mess that was oozing around as it seemed to try to be getting to the mana he stored.

 

Seeing his antibiotics moving around as if a living creature, Rex assumed he was still dreaming. Feeling sympathy for this tortured existence, he gave it all of his mana. This caused a rapid change in the light blue fluid as it began to evolve before his eyes.

 

Kira woke up to see a blue blob the size of two fists eagerly eating all of the acids that Rex had produced. This was a creature that made her feel a profound sense of dread. This was the instinct of a predator when facing a more powerful predator. While she was happy he was okay, she was forced to use her tail to whip some sense into him.

 

Rex began to panic as he realized what he had done, but it was already too late. The little slime he had created was named “Blue,” due to its color. Engineers were never creative, creativity involves not being driven insane by math. This name almost felt too weak for it though as Rex quickly discovered.

 

Blue had evolved past being just a mold, right to the biological weapon category. It could facilitate all kinds of chemical reactions within its goo. Rex wanted to wear it as a protective suit and began to feed it all kinds of different chemicals. Maybe, this was his hidden middle school desires coming out?

 

During this time Kira and Rex had to separate. Rex began to build a dock, and Kira went to get a ship for the slaves. The dock had been created by carving a ramp into a cliff using TNT. They were able to get a lot of the prisoners to work for them during this time.

 

Kira was successfully able to capture the ship with Dora working from the inside, but none of them could pilot it. This had been a major oversight of the duo, and they were forced to find slaves that could. Fortunately, they had an elf who was able to steer the ship. It only required the elf to have mana, and Welch met this requirement.

 

The problem came later when Welch had no way to cast the spells to stop the ship. They had made it to the island at least. The issues soon came after when Rex found out about the slaves. He had been naive to think it would just work out. All of his plans had caused him problems to date, and he often overlooked things.

 

This was the flaw of being alone, and Rex wasn't trained for much else than building and designing. This lead to him changing his approach, and he decided to slow down. Instead of building the refinery himself, he used it to create a workforce. He also focused on working with his 3 friends Borscht, Welch, and Kira.

 

He used the 6 years he had to start trying to disseminate the knowledge in his head. Kira grew as an enchanter, and Welch learned about guns and trained under Borscht. Rex also created a small workforce out of anyone who would work under him. Borscht and Welch were able to get most of the original workers with one exception.

 

The architect of the docks was a beaverman named Bob, by Rex. This was because his original name was Flattail in beaver, and no one could understand it. He was the only one who followed Rex out of the original bunch. Soon this small number grew to 50, then after a few more years, it was over a hundred strong and close to a third of the island's population. Rex no longer counted the dwarves in this number. He let them manage themselves.
