Farawa is a country that has five regions. North, South, West, East and the center region, the Holy Land. In this world, magic, mana and alchemy exist.

People are divided this way. When they are born, they will be tested by putting their hands on a round marble that is invented to check if one is more affiliated to magic; an ability that is closer to being a healer and they are very rare. They are said to borrow the power of the gods that's why they can cure beings that are one step away from death. They're usually seen in the Holy Land, where magicians or priests are told to pray as a way to communicate to the gods.

And then there's people who are affiliated to mana; an ability where they can use the power of elements. Earth, wind, fire, and water. They may not be as rare as the magicians but they are categorised with ranks. Adventurers who are ranked A, S and SSS are considered as important as the priests.

And there's alchemy. People who are affiliated with this ability are also quite rare, the problem is… they don't really matter to society. Most of them become blacksmiths, crafters, merchants or adventurers because of their ability for appraisal. And I use the word 'appraisal' kindly because what they see is just one piece of information and it usually is what kind of creature or plant they checked. That's why alchemists have to be in a party if they want to become an adventurer. They don't have mana to begin with and strength can only be achieved if you work hard and most of the time, even that has limits. Alchemists use likely lies on information they can gather about monsters that have been hunted and as a porter.

As you can think of, I am an alchemist. A lot of people pitied me because of this. Well, that, and also because I am an orphan. My father, who was also an alchemist, was taken advantage of by the party he trusted. From what I have heard, he was pushed to the front to act as a decoy to distract a monster. And then my mother died of childbirth. Fortunately, I wasn't given to the orphanage but was taken in by the old lady who helped my mother give birth; Granny. A neighbor. She has no name, everyone just calls her Granny. When I was younger, I asked her what happened to her family. She said they all died in a war and she was the only one who survived. Now, she's living well in a small town, in a small house she bought.

Luckily, I was loved in this life, too.

That's right. A few years ago, I started dreaming of my past life.

It was bits and pieces at first, and I thought it was just a normal dream where everything didn't make sense. Where else can I find a vehicle that just glides on the ground? Or another vehicle that flies? Or a box that talks? But as I get older and older, the memories start getting clearer.

I was from Earth. I had parents who loved me. I had a sister. I went to college. I had friends. I went to another country with my parents when I was five. I dated one guy in high school who I was still in contact with even when we broke up. I first drank alcohol with my sickly sister when we were twelve. I loved the beach. I loved reading. I once pulled an all nighter to finish an essay. I had my first kiss at the back of a pick up car and had the stars as a witness. I had my first adult sleepover when I was eighteen. I killed myself for my sister.

That was the part that I knew… It wasn't just a dream. It was memories coming back to me and they come in waves. Life on Earth was easier than my life here but I guess that's just all comes to experience. Because unlike my life on Earth, I had never done anything as good as those in here. A part of me is jealous of my past self, she had a life I couldn't have and yet I don't really regret the decision I had made then. Was it the right thing to do? Probably not but it was the decision I chose for me and I quite like that choice. And I also like my life now. Maybe it isn't easier but I feel fulfilled. The me in the past and the me in the present lived in dramatically different times but if there's one thing that past me carried over, it's probably our love for books. Oh, that, and… my knowledge of alchemy.

Funnily enough, yes, I learned more about alchemy in my previous life where I didn't have the ability rather than now that I have it. My past self was a chemistry major in college. I can see where we connect sometimes but the chemistry in modern days on Earth is different from here so that wasn't that helped me. What really helped me, actually, was some fictional media that used Alchemy as my source of information.

Yes, the fiction alchemy is what helped me. They don't all really help but some information was true, half true, and… that-was-really-a-reach-I-can't-believe-that-worked-true.

For example, right now, I am gathering herbs. I can identify the name of the herbs, right, like [Some Herb That Is Useful]. People don't really use it for anything, and are treated like weeds. All Alchemists are aware of this herb but not its uses. That's where the information I got from my past life comes in.

"Some Herb That Is Useful. Expand."

[Some Herb That Is Useful: a plant/herb that grows in any season.

I take a lot of Some Herb That Is Useful. My cooking has been better because of this herb, okay?

Anyway, if you ask me where I learned this trick… I actually got this information in a manga about an Alchemist who was a hermit. I didn't think it would actually work here but it did. I'm not too sure of the mechanics, though. The word EXPAND* doesn't exist in this world. I wonder if it's because I had a clear image of it when I used it. Well… I don't really care how it works as long it works. I have no plans of teaching what I know to anyone, anyway. That would put me in an awkward and disadvantageous situation. I'm a commoner with nothing on my name and I'm still living with Granny, who is way too old to be in any position that would stress her out.

"I'm done…" I already have enough Some Herb That Is Useful to last until next week. It is an entire basket of Some Herb That Is Useful. I need a lot of it because I don't only use it for cooking. Just like the information said, it can be used for potions that work like vitamins, as they call it on Earth. I mainly use it for Granny. She's not as young as she used to be. I want to keep her as much as I can. "Okay, now for the real deal."

By the way, I feel like I haven't told you why I'm looking for Some Herb That Is Useful. I'm not actually here for that but for Other Herb That Everybody Thought Is Much More Useful. It's outside the town, just around the border of the Deadly Forest. The Other Herb That Everybody Thought Is Much More Useful is used like spices for cooking, though, it's actually only good for food to taste a little salty. That's okay, I need it, too, anyway, for that one chemical that is needed for Vitamin-Like-Potion.

I put the Some Herb That Is Useful in my bag pack and put Other Herb That Everybody Thought Is Much More Useful in the basket. When I finish, I look up at the sky and find that the sun is about to set. I need to leave now to have more time to sell my herbs and buy some meat. We have a small farm back home, anyway, so no need for vegetables.

I start listing things I need to do in my head as I walk but I freeze when I feel something cold in my leg.

It's summer. There's no rivers or anything when I came here. I didn't spill any water either. Then it's just one thing, then. I look down and see it.

A slime.

A transparent blob swaying around my foot.

A/N:

I can't name shit so I will not be doing so.

I will also put * to things that I think need explanation.

Expand* is supposed to be in a different language, like the word is from Earth. Farawa has different language considering its another world.

Thank you and enjoy.
