A slime is actually a F-Rank monster that even a kid can kill. It's because they don't really fight, they're just there. Also, they self-breed. It doesn't matter how many slimes a person can kill, they won't be lessening in numbers at all. Slimes are transparent in color, almost water-like but adult slimes are bigger, and should be the same size as a pillow.
But looking at this slime, it's way too small. It's newly born.
I blink at the swaying transparent blob who seems to be looking at me. "You… Do you want me to take you?"
The swaying blob sways intensifies.
"Okay, okay…" I giggle, carrying it by my hands. Cold, soft and seems to be a jelly-like substance. Slimes are useless, that's why nobody cares about them but if they're this cute, they could be a pet. "Do you want to go home with me? I'm gonna go to the Adventurer's Guild, anyway… I will put you under my name, okay?" I can't take a cat or a dog in because Granny is allergic to anything furry, it's why it was hard for me to take care of chickens too. But slimes are probably good.
The slime just continues to move like waves in the ocean. I carry the basket on my arm and my hands with the slime. I walk back to the town and the guard gives me a look and nods.
Then he frowns and sees the slime I'm carrying. "Why are you bringing a slime?"
"I'm making it as a pet. Isn't it cute?"
"Hard to tell. It has no face."
I shrug as the guard laughs softly. I enter the gate and the smell of multiple fried foods enters my lungs, children giggling, multiple people talking coming to my ears at once.
Yes, this is the town. The Small Town.
I walk forward, looking at the small stalls and the shops. In some ways, it's no different from Earth, isn't it? Isn't it how festivals used to be? I walk a few more minutes when I see the Adventurer's Guild. It's a big building, with two lions as a statue on either side of the door. It's built like a castle, brick by brick.
The door is guarded by two Adventurer's Guild staff. I show them my card and they open it slightly.
Inside, there are only a few people. A bunch of them are on the mission board, and a few are at the counter talking to the receptionists.
I walk there and one of them, Gina, smiles at me.
"You're here!" She exclaims happily.
I met Gina when I was seven and Granny was walking me around to teach me how to work in Adventurer and Merchant's Guild. By the way… Gina is an elf. From what I have heard, she was only around eighty years old and yet she still looks and acts like a teenager. It's probably still a teenager's age for elves, though.
"Hi, Miss Gina." I smile and put the slime on top of the counter.
Gina looks at it. "A baby slime?"
"I want to put it under my name. Is that okay?"
"Well, yes." Gina holds up her hand and I give her my card. "Usually, we need to check if the chosen beast is obedient towards their owner. Considering it's just a slime, there's no need for that."
"Okay. Also, I have a basket of Other Herb That Everybody Thought Is Much More Useful. I saw a mission for that this morning."
"Yes. The Merchant's Guild had us put that. May I see it so I can put that in your card?"
The basket is just on my arm so it's easy to just show it to her.
Gina grabs the basket and puts it on top of a weighing scale. She nods in confirmation as she hands it over to me. "Do the normal procedure to get your pay." She reminds me.
"I will." I will need to go to the Merchant's Guild. Crap. I don't like that place. Not only are they — well. That's for later.
Gina puts my card inside an elegant box. It glows and a screen pops out in front of her. She starts writing with her finger, mana flowing on its tip. Gina is an Earth mana user, and she could be a D-Rank Adventurer but was chosen to be a receptionist instead.

"I will also write the slime now. What will you name it?"
A cute slime… slime… lime… "I'll name it Lime."
Gina looks at me in disbelief and then she sighs. "Of course, you'll name it that."
"What do you mean?" I frown. "It's cute!"
"Ah, Lime, at least you're a pet, that name fits you…"
"Stop pitying my slime!" I exclaim and Lime starts moving away from my hands to travel to my arm, shoulder and then stops on top of my head. It sways its body like it's excited.
"It's happy to be named." Gina says as she pats Lime. "You be good now, you pet slime." She passes my card back and waves me goodbye as I walk out of the guild.
With Lime on top of my head, my head feels like it cooled off. I slide my card to my bag as I walk towards the Merchant's Guild. I'm not really feeling like going there even if I have to. Unlike the Adventurer's Guild, I'm not comfortable going to that place but well, what else can I do?
I reach the guild. Just like the Adventurer's Guild, there are two Adventurer's guarding the entrance. Inside, there is obviously a much more abundance of people here than in Adventurer's Guild. It's probably because even store and stall owners go here to do their business. I go to the counter and a receptionist I don't know talks to me.
"What can I do for you?" she asks and I offer a basket of herbs and my guild cards. "Oh, I see." She puts my Adventurer's Guild card into the box, to check if I really did the mission. Next, she puts my Merchant's Guild card, probably to put the success of my mission, even if it's just herb gathering.
I should probably explain: in Merchant's Guild, there are ranks as well. If Adventurer's, they do it by letters, Merchant's do it by number. Rank 1 are owners of the Earth's equivalent of corporation. Rank 2 is for multiple stores, like branches. Rank 3 is for one business and one store, and so on. People like me, who are basically just doing the bidding of herbs collecting for small scale restaurants, we are in Rank 0. This Rank has no store or stall and are just doing odd jobs here and there. However, if that's the case, why do I need an Adventurer's Guild card? It's because Adventurer's are the only ones allowed to go near the forest where most herbs are available and they're good for insurance, too.
"You will get paid ten copper coins." She gives me my cards and the payment. "Every one kilo of the herb is five copper coins. You provided two kilos. Thank you for your hard work."
"Thank you."
"Ten copper coins?" A voice of an old man suddenly butts in. "For her? Woman, that's a waste. Women shouldn't even get herbs or nothing. Why not do your role as a wide?"
This is why… I'm not comfortable. The people in Merchant's Guild are not as welcoming as Adventurers. Because they're Merchants, they believe that money should be the answer to everything.
"Sir, please don't cut in line." The receptionist tries to change the subject.
"You… Are you not a mother yet? You're old enough to look for a husband, kid. You should let a man do its job for you and you should stay in the house. How about this, I have a son —"
"I will be leaving now." I awkwardly smile and walk out.
"HEY! I WAS JUST LOOKING AT YOU! WHAT A BITCH!" The man exclaims angrily. "Fuck, that old woman she lives with refuses to sell that land! Bitches, both of them! I offer her my son and she acts like that old bitch to me!"
I flinch slightly. I can take any insult aimed at me but never about the woman who raised me. That's a line. I turn my head and glare at the old man. The gate opens and the guard reminds me, "You are not allowed to fight here."
"He disrespected me first." I grit my teeth.
"The first one who throws a punch is the criminal. That's the rule."
I give the guard a look before completely walking out of there. If I don't do anything to piss on that bastard, I am not an Alchemist. I plan an entire revenge in my head when I feel the cold, round metal on my hand.
Ten copper coins. This is enough to feed me and Granny for a week, depending on how we do it.
One might think that it probably should be easy to earn a week-long budget to get herbs. But that's only because I have an Alchemy ability, and I personally didn't need too much of the herb I was selling for. But for an average person, I don't think they can sell the entire basket as they also need it. And I could only fill an entire basket for going outside for a day. I was outside the forest before sunrise. There's also the fact there's only Granny and I to feed, and we only need to buy meat. We already have a farm in the backyard.
Why do you think that merchant fool back in the Merchant's Guild wanted the house?
