Chapter 3: 3

The Fall Family

 

(Rose’s POV)

My mother was the only one who had black hair and black eyes in our family. She was a wonderful Lady who always kept her hair tied up without leaving a single strand out.

How long are we going to wait? Then, my brother suddenly raised his hand and asked.

“Mother. I’m getting frustrated because it’s dark. Can I bring a few more candles?”

I immediately shook my head.

“No, Brother. It would only ruin the atmosphere.”

“But I feel stuffy. I need to see what I’m doing, whether I’m having a meeting or not.”

“I can’t see my brother’s face, so I feel more liberated.”

“This.”

As we were having a meaningless quarrel, my mother finally spoke.

“As expected of my daughter. You know it well.”

Ugh As my brother made a sound of pain, he immediately straightened his back. I also did the same. The opening of my mother’s mouth meant that the meeting had begun.

What the hell happened that led us to have this meeting? No. Actually, I can guess what the problem is.

“Rose.”

My mother’s black pearl-like eyes turned to me without a single flutter.

“Do you have anything to say to me?”

“………”

Hearing these words scare me, even before and after I possessed this body. Even if I did nothing wrong, just hearing these words makes me cringe and feel guilty. A thousand thoughts ran through my head, I nodded. As if pretending to be as obedient and meek as possible.

“Belial said goodbye to me.”

“Okay. I’ve already heard from Beryl earlier today.”

Seriously, that kid. I was going to tell them when the atmosphere in the house was suitable. As I glanced at the person beside me, Beryl, mouthed th “What?” I thought of hitting his mouth with my hand, but then again, I don’t want to be contaminated.

“What a man he is.”

My mother spread her fan, which was the same color as her hair.

“To break our expectations and say goodbye instead of proposing. Should I call this good luck or bad luck?”

“Of course, it’s a misfortune… Ouch!”

At my mother’s word’s, my brother attempted to get up and accidentally hit his knee on the table. My older brother leaned in a little, as if trying to keep his poker face on.

“Well, of course it’s misfortune.”

I couldn’t help but shudder at the sound of his voice. I clicked my tongue.

I can sympathize how painful that must have been. I’ve once hit my knee on a table while spacing out. That’s why I feel sorry for him. I think? My poor pathetic brother.

Though, it’s more fun thinking about how much that must’ve hurt. He’s on the verge of crying. I can see the tears in the corners of his eyes. 

“Of course, if he had proposed to her, I would have been pissed off as well. But it’s a different matter when he’s the one who ended their relationship. I simply cannot let that go!”

“I’m the one who was dumped. Why are you making such a fuss about it?”

Despite my question, my brother continued to voice out his opinion.

“The one who should have led the breakup is Rose, not that boy!”

“Ah, son. The Duke of Serenity also had something…”

“Why do you always consider his situation? Don’t you think we should do something about this?!

“That’s not it…”

My father tried to cover up for Belial, but he failed. So  he just kept his mouth shut. This is a big deal since this little squirt keeps asserting his dominance over our father.

My brother put his hand on his chest.

“Mother! If you give me the knights right now, I will definitely kill him… !”

On the other hand, my mother managed to cut off my brother with just one phrase.

“Rather, it is you who will die.”

“Mother! “

This is the author’s fault. Why didn’t I notice these unique characters in the original story? When I first saw Primrose, I thought that it was my first time encountering such a character, it made me very confused. Telling somebody that they’re going to die is really bold. I looked at my mother with tired eyes.

“My dear, you won’t even be able to bite Belial.”

“Isn’t that a bit too harsh?!”

“What’s harsh about it? I’m just telling the truth.”

Argh. My brother got angry and hit his knee on the edge of the table once again. I sat there and looked at my brother, who’s holding his knee with moistened eyes. That’s what you get for betraying me. I’ll definitely tease you for the next ten years. Then, my mother gently waved the fan in a very elegant way.

“But I agree with you to some extent. The fact that my only daughter got dumped by him is just so upsetting.”

“… Are you going to give me a bottle and some medicine, mother?!”

(TN/N: It means that he is asking for some solution to the issue. In this context, he’s asking for some Knights to defeat Belial.)

“Shh. Baby, you have to listen to what other people have to say.”

My mother was definitely right from start to finish.  I nodded my head to agree with her statement. And then, my mother smiled and called my name.

“Rose, the pride of our family and the only rose in the world.”

My brother groaned.

“What rose? More like a pumpkin flower….”

(TN/N: Pumpkin flower is a figure of speech which means an Ugly woman.)

I stomped on my brother’s foot firmly. My brother then had to grab his other foot this time. Then my father immediately looked at my brother, with a warning gaze.

“This is really…!”

My brother looked at me, but I didn’t really care. I kept my gaze towards my mother. Suddenly, she made eye contact with me and asked.

“What did he say to you when he asked you to break-up?”

What did he say? I shrugged.

“I didn’t get any answers.”

I was so surprised to receive a breakup notice from the certified obsessive man of this story, that’s why I didn’t notice it until now. Mother then covered her mouth with a fan.

“Then it means that the zealot unilaterally revealed his position and ran away.”

“It’s kind of like that.”

A small laugh rang out, after I agreed with her.

“It’s so funny even when I say it. That the Duke of Serenity, who was never afraid to face hundreds of thousands of troops, is running away because of my daughter.”

“……….”

What’s the point of him being weak to me? Since I’ve already been dumped, the original story will get twisted. If I don’t die, then the heroine won’t be able to defeat Belial later on..

I just realized the situation that I’m in again. What kind of life should I lead now??

Should I just live my life, while comforting myself that there’s no fine dust in this world?

Then suddenly, my mother grabbed my shoulder.

“I’ll give you a carriage. Go and see him tomorrow.”

My eyes widened.

“What?”

“Well it’s not polite of him to just say what he wants and then leave right away. That’s considered very disrespectful to anyone, even if you ask other people. That’s why you need to visit him and tell him your side as well.”

“Even if you say that…”

I hesitated and my words trailed off What if I go to his mansion tomorrow and hold on to the hem of his robe? Though, it seems that Belial has already made up his mind to break up with me. There is nothing worse than clinging on to a lover who already has his mind made up. 

However, if I go and visit him tomorrow to pour out everything that I wanted to say, Belial definitely won’t sit still.

“Rose?”

Before I met him, Belial was known as a madman who would punish anyone that disobeyed him. It’s not like my mother hates him for no reason, that’s why I’m now questioning her motives. Aside from that Belial is acting like a harmless golden retriever… What happened to his true nature?

And if I did what she asked me to do, I would definitely be killed, with a swing of his sword.

Then that will be the end of my boring life, just like what I wish for. I nodded my head resolutely.

“Okay. I’ll go.”

After I gave my answer, my brother immediately stood up.

“Mom! Why are you sending her?! Wouldn’t it be better to send me instead?! I’ll make sure to make him regret it!”

But this time Mother was relentless.

“How many times do I have to tell you that your head will definitely be cut off? Let Rose do it herself.”

“I don’t think she can do it…?! Then, let me go with her and I’ll just sit inside the carriage and be a lookout.!”

“Beryl.”

“I will never allow it! Even if you throw dust in my eyes!”

(TN/N: Throw dust in (one’s) eyes is an idiom that means to mislead or deceive someone by introducing distracting thoughts.)

Then, I asked the maid who came into the room to change the candle.

“Bring me one flowerpot here.”

“Have you been tainted by that child too?!”

My brother screamed back and forth inside the room.

“You really are just deceiving me! I won’t allow you to go there!”

… What the hell are you going to do about it? I covered my ears and took a deep breath.

“I know that you can do well, brother. But please, trust me this time.”

My brother’s spirit calmed down, but his face was more serious now more than ever.

“You…”

“I will just finalize our breakup and leave. You don’t have to worry so much.”

My mother also followed suit.

“Rose is also a decent adult. I’m sure she can do that much.”

I nodded my head with a blank face.

“I have never been happy once ever since I met you, so let’s not meet ever again. That’s what I’ll say to him.”

“Okay, that’s fine, my daughter.”

“….. Well, if that’s the case then, I can’t help if you say it like that. Then good luck for tomorrow then.”

That’s cruel…! My father shuddered as he got caught up between us.

(Rose’s POV)

Sometimes I wonder if it’s okay to continue living like this?

I fall asleep at night and wake up during the day without anyone telling me to do so. At mealtime, I eat the food on the table. Afterwards, take a bath and get dressed up before I go out. After I finish my work for the day, I just lie in bed and read books. 

It is something that everyone naturally does if they are born as human beings. But after a while, these normal things start to feel kind of boring. That’s how I feel right now.

“My Lady, shall we start dressing up?”

I don’t feel anything when I see the people that I live with. It’s just ‘Oh, this is my friend’ and ‘Oh, this is my family’. If the other person knew how I felt, he or she would be upset, but I just couldn’t help it.

It wasn’t that I didn’t try hard. I try to be happy when people are happy and get angry when they are angry. It was a spur of the moment. After that moment, the world felt achromatic again.

“What kind of dress would you like to wear for today?”

I don’t want to think about anything. I don’t want to say anything. I don’t want to do anything. I just stared blankly in front of the mirror. Mira, who was combing my hair, made a worried sound.

“You’re at it again. Please forgive me for being rude.”

Mira put down the comb and grabbed my shoulder firmly. As she shook me violently without a care.

“My Lady!”

My neatly combed hair fluttered to and fro. Wow, it’s like being on a ride. This is kinda fun, so I ordered..

“Shake me a little harder.”

“Lady!!!”

What do people live for? What’s the reason why people should keep on living? I’m so bored of living that I’m going crazy. Mira then grabbed my forehead as she looked at my disheveled hair.

“I really like you, but I don’t understand why you’re being like this.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No, you don’t have to apologize….”

Mira shrugged and pointed her finger towards the dressing room.

“Please choose a dress to wear, My Lady.”

Even though I’m not a big fan of shopping, the dressing room was full of all kinds of dresses and accessories. I asked her while standing in front of the dressing room.

“What day is it today?”

“It’s the 7th.”

I nodded and counted the dresses on the hanger one by one. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven….

I skipped past the seventh dress and chose the eighth dress.
