The chance which now seems lost

may present itself at the last moment.

—Jules Verne, Around the World in Eighty Days

At last, the girl whose name still eluded me stirred to a sense of consciousness. Her chest began to rise and fall at a steady pace; her eyelids fluttered much like the butterfly that first found her in this very room.

I wondered if the indescribable sensation that I felt now was the same as when Archimedes ran around naked in the streets of Italy shouting 'Eureka!'. In the view of God and the old world, I must have just accomplished the impossible and defiled the sanctity of death. But none of that mattered in the face of the new life I had successfully created.

From here on, we will probably be the only inhabitants on this earth, so making a good first impression was a matter of utmost importance. Humans, I'd observed, typically behave contrary to the common human expression of not 'judging a book by its cover'. I figured that she would be most willing to talk with someone of a similar physique and attractive countenance. So, I quickly changed my appearance to that of a young girl with silver hair that would compliment the blacks of my robe nicely.

Clearing my throat quietly to test my vocal cords, I tentatively started our first conversation with a simple human greeting.

"Hello."

It took a long moment for the girl to finally notice me. Her lips trembled with effort, but she did not offer a reply back.

Bemused, I tried again. "You're finally awake...how are you feeling?"

She finally managed to croak out a sound. "W...wa...water...lease..."

Asking a request of me so soon? I gave a resigned smile as I fetched a canteen of water and opened it for her. "I tried to purify this water to the best of my abilities, but spit it out if you taste anything funny, alright?"

Seemingly oblivious to my word of caution, the girl eagerly drank from the canteen until not even a single drop of liquid was left. She held out the empty canteen towards me.

"C-can...I...more?" she said, her voice a fragile, shaky squeak more than a real voice.

I nodded my head and quickly passed her another canteen of water. She drank through half of its contents before finally coughing and wiping at her mouth with her hand.

"Th-thank you..." Her crystal clear emerald green eyes focused on me. "Y-you...are...?"

I hesitated before saying, "my name is Mori. I found you here and...resuscitated you."

"Mori...you saved my life?" she said, blinking as she mouthed each word slowly. "I...I must thank you."

"There's no need to thank me. I did it on behalf of...someone," I murmured. "Anyway, what is your name, girl?"

"I..." She knitted her brows into a frown and averted her eyes. "I'm not sure...but someone used to call me 'Rya'."

"Rya, I see." I tilted my head to the side. "Will you mind if I call you by that name?"

"No, not at all...M-Mori," Rya said, seemingly not used to saying the name I chose. She paused to glance around at the room. "Um, this place..."

"Do you know anything about this place?" I asked curiously.

"N-no, but it feels familiar to me for some reason." Her wavering gaze landed on the two corpses dressed in white by the window and she stopped.

It had completely slipped my mind that there were two dead humans in the same room as us.

I hesitatingly asked, "are you okay, Rya?"

There was a long silence that ensued, until I thought that she might not have heard me. Just when I opened my mouth to repeat my question, she nodded her head ever so slightly.

"I think I know them, Mori," Rya said quietly. "But...I can't remember..." She rubbed her temples with her thumbs in frustration. "I can't...their names...or their personalities when they were...were alive."

I gazed at her conflicted face quietly. "Rya..."

"Y...yes?"

"Does..." I swallowed, hesitating to speak. "Does the idea of...death scare you?"

Surprise flickered in her gaze before vanishing from her wide eyes in an instant. She shook her head and smiled.

"...why?"

"Because, Mori," she said softly. "I've already died once."
