We are born alone

we live alone

we die alone

Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for a moment that we're not alone.

—Orson Welles

I don't believe in miracles.

Miracles are nothing short of a childish human attempt to explain anomalies that they perceive in their lives. To me, there is no such thing as miracles. Anything and everything that happens is a direct result of natural laws that bind the world together. It is only when humans fail to comprehend this that they seek answers in a place that does not exist and thus label them as 'miracles'.

Yet, as I gazed upon the unmistakable life that lay before me in this still and unmoving world, I found myself questioning if there was indeed the existence of miracles. Somehow or other, humans have managed to catch me by surprise even after their extinction.

The girl should be dead—that I was certain. Her fragile skin, icy cold to the touch, was as pale as the human depiction of a ghost. Other than the inexplicable beating of her heart and blood circulating in her veins, nothing about her gave away the fact that she was still alive. It was as though I was staring at the face of irony incarnate.

A fierce disconcertment gripped my core. This feeling of bizarreness that enshrouds and bemuses me, yet piques my curiosity at the same time...is this how it feels like to meet someone who has cheated death in my face?

Impossible...then again, something like this—no matter how incredulous it may appear to be—is possible in a world built upon paradoxes, isn't it?

"How amusing," I murmured, retracting my scythe from her chest. "How do you humans always manage to find a way to defy the natural order of this world?"

Unsurprisingly, her lips remained frozen in place. Well, I doubt she would have been able to understand my language even if she was capable of giving a response.

But as far as I could tell, this girl was teetering on a precarious balance between life and death. It isn't rare to see a person hanging by their thread of life during a phenomenon that they call 'near-death experience', but this is the first time I had seen someone perfectly suspended in this transitionary state. I was even slightly inclined to believe that she had somehow stopped time solely for herself.

However, the annoying thing about balances is that even the slightest change in their supporting environments can possibly lead to their total collapse. The balance that supported the world was precisely destroyed in this way. And now, I could sense that my very presence inside the room was inevitably pushing the girl closer to me—to death.

As soon as I realised this, I didn't hesitate to sing Life's levenslied. It was scarcely enough to restore the balance. And the instant I stopped singing, the girl began to slip towards death again.

I hated to admit it, but I knew that my current power was not sufficient to bring a human fully to life. I would have to work much harder to collect threads of life to amplify the effect of her levenslied. Vexing, indeed.

Just in case, I poured the remaining power within me into erecting a barrier to seal the space around her body. Better than keeping her in the janky plastic body bag, at least.

"Wait for me here, alright?" I whispered, despite being unsure if the girl could even hear me. "I promise that I will come back for you."
