Chapter 1: Prologue

I was 13 years old when I lost my parents to a freak accident. Sarah was 4.

We had no one else, both Mom and Dad were the only child of long dead parents and had moved to another state to start a new life, taking us far away from any relative we might have had.

I often thought it was intentional but I never questioned it. I should have questioned it,but I didn't and after their death Sarah had no one but me. 

Not willing to be separated from her, I always told people, who bother to ask that our grandma was staying with us. Most probably didn't believe me but they never pushed and with time they totally ignored us, and just like that I became father, mother, big brother to my baby sister and though it was hell I felt it was the least I deserved.  

Two days after Sarah's sixth birthday, a drizzly dark January morning I went fishing to the river minutes away from our farm house in the hills as was now customary every Wednesday, wearing my usual fishing wear of Dad's brown rubber waders and the grey rain jacket to keep out the 6am cold.

The fishes were harder that morning and I was getting desperate because I had thought heavy rain was coming, and heavy rain meant no fish and no fish meant no breakfast for Sarah. I wouldn't let that happen but I couldn't do much but wait.

Waited I did and then I felt a pull. 

At the same time I felt the pull I saw lightning on the horizon far away but I felt safe so I paid no mind to it, excited by my luck. 

But then a bolt struck. 

I remember the deafening boom and a flash so bright I felt my eyes burn, and after which I think I lost consciousness.

That day was 24th January 2022. The day the nightmares started.
