Chapter 2: Chapter One

They said my heart stopped for several minutes.

Luckily Mr. McIntyre and Nurse Maddie were "randomly around" at the time, and Nurse Maddie started performing CPR just in time to keep me in. I didn't know any of this, I was entirely out of it. She said at the time I was foaming at the mouth and turning purple, and they thought I wasn't going to make it.

Luckily I did. 

When I woke up I was in the hospital. Sandra, on her school uniform was sitting on a chair by my right with her head resting on the bed, sleeping. I wanted to stroke her hair but I was afraid I would wake her up.

I heard someone walk in, I looked up to find the doctor. Mrs. Patel.

"And the miracle child wakes" the doctor said, looking up from her paperwork. "How are you feeling, Jude"

"I'm fine, Doc" I replied but I doubt she heard me. She was busy slowly flipping through and studying something in her paperwork, and I was busy calculating how much all this would cost.

"So,"  she finally said looking up again. "Do you know how we can contact your grandma? Or any other guardian cause we've gone to your house and no one but Sarah was there"

"Oh yeah, Grandma is out of town."  I lied. "She would be back tomorrow"

Doctor Patel stared at me. "And by tomorrow you mean..."

"Tommorow" I replied been careful.

"Jude, You've been out for 2 days." Dr. Patel said in a voice that wasn't trying to hide pity. "And judging by what happened to you that would be considered a blessing"

"What happened to me? "I asked for at that time I did not know. Or probably didn't understand.

"I would say you were struck by lightning but that won't even make sense"

She leaned forward, smelling like springtime Hyacinth and placed her stethoscope just to the inner side of my upper arm. It was at that time that I realized she was still talking. Something about lightning normally causing a wide range of damage, from tingling and numbness to cardiac arrest and lasting brain injury. Then I felt her gaze on me. "huh?" I arched my brows in question. I had had my eyes so intent on her big breasts that I wasn't even paying the slightest attention to what she was saying. 

"I said are you sure you are okay?" she repeated. "No burn feeling? Your hearing okay?"

Sarah was now stirring up.

"I'm fine, doc" I said, gently placing my hand on Sarah's head.

She opened her eyes and swung in on me, crying. I could barely hear her underneath the whole crying but I kept saying it's okay as I stroke her head. Doctor Patel just stood there looking at us. 

"I feel fine, doc" I repeated as Sarah was now quieting down. "Just give me the bills and discharge paper work to sign."

She laughed. "Sometimes I forget how old you are." she said. "You will be here till a guardian comes"

"And how much will that cost?"

"An extra $12,500" she said. 

"oh come on!" I complained. "you know I can't afford that."

"Then call a guardian" she smiled and left.

She knew I couldn't afford that too. She lived in the neighborhood and was one of those who probably knew there was no grandma but try their best not to interfere.

"Hey Soso." I called Sarah who was still resting on my shoulder. "You think you can find Auntie Maddie for me?"

She nodded but still remained in place.

"Anytime now"

This time she shook her head. "No you will leave again"

I chuckled. "I'm not going anywhere, So." I said. "Not until we paid the bills, and I can't do that without Auntie Maddie, okay?"

She lifted herself to look at me, all teary as if to get confirmation for my words and somehow satisfied with what she saw she ran out.

I relaxed back into my bed. Closed my eyes and for the first time in two years I had a nightmare that had nothing to do with our parents accident.
