Chapter 10: Chapter 8 – What to do on a break in another world

“Hmm… what should I do today?”, I muttered as soon as I woke up from bed.

Yesterday I went through a hellish training session, I had to do bow training and fight against a guy named Michael. Afterwards, Iris appeared and said that I should take a break.

Back on earth I wouldn’t really do anything unless I found it fun and entertaining in a way. Sometimes I even worked like a workaholic.

‘So, what should I do?’, I had no idea what to do on a break. Especially when there’s no advanced technology from what I can tell.

In this world I entertained myself learning magic, so what should I do?

After I stood up from bed, I put my clothes on and went to the living room to find Iris eating breakfast.

“Good morning Shiro. I made toast, would you like some?”, Iris asked

“Yeah sure, would love to.”, I said as I sat down on the table and Iris passed me some toast and water. It may not be the best combination, but it still tastes good.

“I would like to ask you something. Where do you get the ingredients to make food?” I asked. It’s not as if there’s a convenience store in the elven village.

“All Elves have different jobs in the village. Some of them hunt, and others harvest from the cultivation crops that we have.”, Iris explained as she sipped a bit of tea from her cup. “I for example go hunting, Leo is a magic teacher and a librarian.”

“Uh-huh.”, I muttered. “Yeah what do you do on a break or rather what’s there to do here?”

Iris put a finger to her cheek. “Well, the children play tag, pretend and other games. While adults work the whole time and when they’re on a break, they rest.” Iris said.

In this world the age you are considered an adult is fifteen years old, because of the existence of monsters and the medieval way this world works.

“Are you telling me I’m supposed to just rest a whole day. I can’t do that it’s too boring”, I complained

I could barely entertain myself back on earth, even though there were so many things to do. The worse way to die is out of boredom!!!

“That’s it! I got an idea, why don’t you go have fun with my little sisters or you could say… could you please take care of them for me. I am sure they’ll be thrilled. Especially Lara since now she can see you.”, Iris asked of me with a smile. The smile could even purify a ghost like me.

“Hmm… doesn’t sound like a bad idea.”, I said.

 

 

Iris’s sisters go to some type of school to learn common language and mathematics. They were about to have break soon and that is where I come in.

“Wow, so that’s how you look like Mr. Shiro!!!”, Lara exclaimed as she scanned every inch of me (not really).

Lara and Luna were Iris’s twin sisters. Luna was able to see spirits while Lara was unable to.

“Hmph! I already knew how he looked like from the beginning.”, Luna smirked with a proud smile. “That’s amazing sis!”, Lara said with a smile

‘Seriously Iris’s sisters have angel like smiles!!!’, I thought as I saw the radiant light protruding from their smiles.

“Shiro, could you please take care of them during the afternoon.”, Iris asked me as I looked at the twin sisters. They were looking at me with pleading eyes as if hoping for me to say yes.

“Yeah sure, I’ll take this as my ‘break’.”, I answered

Taking care of children might not be a bad way of taking a break. The best part about this it’s that they are girls so they should be more well behaved. Not because of any obscene thoughts I have… none at all!

““Yay!!! Big brother will be taking care of us today.””, The twins shouted in sync.

‘B-b-big brother?!’, I thought as something horrible crossed my mind.

I am blushing really hard right now. Please tell me that they can’t see it.

“Thank you Shiro. I’ll come pick them up after a while. Later.”, Iris said as she left.

“Now then… what are we gonna do?”, I asked the two twins

The twin sisters and I played for two hours. We played tag, hide and seek, pretend and other stuff, I guess. This world doesn’t have a lot of ways of entertainment because of the existence of monsters that has to be kept in check. That’s why most people don’t have time to create things like board games.

Back on earth I played video games and watched anime as a form of entertainment. Unfortunately, those things don’t exist here. I did play board games on earth though, like chess once. One of my siblings introduced it to me and thus I learned how to play it and started enjoying playing it.

I didn’t think it was a good idea to teach elementary school grade like girls how to play chess and I wasn’t sure whether or not they had that game in this world.

“”Big brother that was a lot of fun!!!””, The twin sister exclaimed.

“Yeah, uhm… why are you calling me big brother you already have an older brother don’t you?”, I asked.

Iris has two young twin sisters and one younger brother (since Iris is 356 years old and elves live one thousand years).

“The thing is our older brother never really plays with us.”, Luna shortly explained.” Yeah, he barely even speaks to us nor our family, and the reason we call you big brother is because you act more like one.”, Lara continued.

Their actual older brother act kind of like me. On earth one of my rules were ‘I stay in my corner, you stay in yours’. Maybe he thinks the same way.

I looked at the twin sisters who looked down with a sad expression on their faces. “Alright, I have an idea. Why don’t we play a game that I have in my mind” The moment I said that the sisters expressions turned into smiles.

 

 

 

I tried explaining them the rules of chess, the reason why I changed my mind is because I might as well as teach them about and also because of their sad expressions.

Lara was able to figure out quickly how to play the game, while Luna was still confused as to why the horse can jump over all other pawns while the others can’t.

We played the game for a good bit, until Iris arrived.

“What game are you playing and why are you using stones and sticks for it?”, Iris asked as she arrived.

Of course, there was no table of chess nor the pawns for it, so I had to improvise with stones and sticks.

“We are playing a game of chess.” I answered as I placed the tower and queen to surround my opponents king. “Checkmate!”, I declared my victory.

“Nooooo, I lost again!”, Luna complained as she thrashed around. “Why is Lara so much better at this!?”, Luna asked.

“That’s probably, because I have higher intelligence than you.”, Lara threw that at Luna. Luna stared at her with eyes full of hate, but right before she could do something Iris butted in and said.

“Okay, now Lara, Luna we have to go. Our parents are waiting. Oh, and Shiro would you like to come with us?”, I looked at Iris and responded. “Yes, and there’s something I would like to talk to you about.”

“Okay… let’s talk about it at home.”, Iris said.

 

 

 

After Iris arrived at home, she led the twin sisters to their rooms and then came back to the living room.

Iris sat down on a chair. “So, what did you want to talk about.”, Iris asked in a friendly tone.

“I would like to go together hunting with you.”, I asked and then added.” Ever since I came to this village, you have been so nice to me. You asked your parents for me to stay at your home and you lent me clothes and food even though I don’t need it.”

This is what has been in my mind, the whole time. Imagine being a stranger and then meeting somebody who then lends you food, home, clothes and even teaches you about the world that you don’t have any knowledge about. Of course, you’d want to do something to repay them.

“You don’t have to really. I did that out of my own accord.”, Iris said but then I interrupted. “No! I just can’t live off of you and not do anything. Even if you say that you did that of your own accord. This feeling of guilt just won’t disappear!”

Everything suddenly turned silent. Iris looked at me with kind eyes, the ruby colored eyes that you could drown yourself in, were locked onto mine.

After a little pause, Iris was the first one to talk. “Fine, I’ll ask the hunting team if they’ll allow you to join them.”

“Thank you.”, I thanked her.

And so It was decided that I was going hunting tomorrow.
